Bin Laden - 'Cornered' ??

Saw this article - which makes it sound like they're closing in on the guy.

http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exer...F3DA4F4800.htm

But I can't find any other coverage that would provide additional credibility to this story. Has anyone seen any other info?

Some English tabloid had a story on it.

I wouldn't count on it until the pics are on the net.

I dunno, although the Telegraph isnt a tabloid it is a broadsheet and quite well respected, but that doesnt make it any more likely.

If they do catch him and kill him (I dont think he'll go alive) it will just make him more powerful. Unlike Saddam, Bin Laden really believes his whole Holy War matra, and probably dreams of being a matyr for it - he said in one of the speeches he put out "if you kill me, 100 new Usama's will be born" and I think he is probably right. (well, not LITERALLY, but you know what I mean)

btw, nine, the Telegraph article was linked on Fark.com

Do people still care if we catch him or not? Will it even make a difference?

I remember people were all kinds of happy when Saddam was captured. Oh yeah, cause that has stopped the violence in Iraq

I agree with Averett... too many people take Bin Laden seriously, in my opinion he is not the master terrorist most of America thinks he is, just an intolerant and hateful religious bigot, and a bigmouth.

Wow.
At the risk of getting this bumped over to "Politics"...

Bin Laden is still a highly sympathetic individual to a large part of the Arab world. His charisma and vision has driven Al Queda. His ability to remain at-large while the most powerful military in the world makes a very public display of his pursuit is a source of inspiration to his followers, and encourages imitators.

If US forces finally capture him, it sends the message emhatically: "You can run, but you cannot hide." If he slips out of this... or was never there to begin with... the opposite message is just as strong. I don't blame US officials for not promoting this turn of events. If it goes badly, their credibility takes a fatal shot.

Please stop equating Saddam with Bin Laden. Despite the hype, the Iraqi campaign was never "war on terrorism" related. Bin Laden is a general in a borderless war. Saddam was just a gangster.

If they do capture him, it will be largely symbolic, as other terror networks would fill the void easily.

If they capture Bin Laden, Al Qaeda it self will probably be better off, as whoever takes control, would spin the capture of Bin Laden to favour the terror movement.

I'm more apt to believe what I see/hear on TV/radio before I believe what I read on the internet.

For all we know, Bin Laden is cowardly hiding in a hole just like Saddam.

Also at the risk of having this bumped to Politics:

It's not close enough to Election Day to catch him.
I predict he'll be "captured" sometime between Labor Day and Halloween.

And - I agree with <b>grumpyolddude</b> - the American people need bin Laden captured or killed to get some closure regarding 9/11. Just because Al Queda is a serpent that can regrow its heads is no reason to not keep chopping them off.

Perhaps if our President had forgone his private war in Iraq, we'd already have bin Laden. $87B worth of wasted resources could have gone a long way toward that end.

I'm sorry, but that is incredibly offensive, insensitive, and unpleasant.

Bin Laden 'Surrounded'

-=- http://www.sundaytelegraph.news.com....-28778,00.html -=-

A BRITISH Sunday newspaper is claiming Osama bin Laden has been found and is surrounded by US special forces in an area of land bordering north-west Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Sunday Express, known for its sometimes colourful scoops, claims the al-Qaeda leader has been "sighted" for the first time since 2001 and is being monitored by satellite.

The paper claims he is in a mountainous area to the north of the Pakistani city of Quetta. The region is said to be peopled with bin Laden supporters and the terrorist leader is estimated to also have 50 of his fanatical bodyguards with him.

The claim is attributed to "a well-placed intelligence source" in Washington, who is quoted as saying: "He (bin Laden) is boxed in."

The paper says the hostile terrain makes an all-out conventional military assault impossible. The plan to capture him would depend on a "grab-him-and-go" style operation.

"US helicopters already sited on the Afghanistan border will swoop in to extricate him," the newspaper says. It claims bin Laden and his men "sleep in caves or out in the open. The area is swept by fierce snow storms howling down from the 10,000ft-high mountain peaks. Donkeys are the only transport."

The special forces are "absolutely confident" there is no escape for bin Laden, and are awaiting the order to go in and get him.

"The timing of that order will ultimately depend on President Bush," the paper says. "Capturing bin Laden will certainly be a huge help for him as he gets ready for the election."

The article says bin Laden's movements are monitored by a National Security Agency satellite.

On Thursday last week, General Richard Myers, chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, said America had been engaged in "intense" efforts to capture bin Laden, who was believed to be hiding in the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

But he insisted that the focus of the search had not narrowed for months.

I would ask that when people make this statement to please remember the THOUSANDS of Kurds that Saddam killed with gas. Im sure it wasnt too tough for his regime to destroy or move the WMDs to another country to try to make Bush look bad.

20 bucks says they already have bin Laden and they will 'unveil' him just before the election, most likely dead.
