What is the medias definition of rape?

I don't want to be insensitive here, but I'm a bit confused.

When we hear the word rape used in the media, are they talking about intercourse or any sexual assault?

A quick bit of research showed the legal definition of "what constitutes rape" to vary quite a bit depending on local jusrisdiction. The media, however, speaks to a national audience and lately the word "rape" has been in the news a lot. I assume when they use the word they know what it means. What's their definition?

Thanks for listening.

Definition of rape: whatever gets them a bigger audience and more money.

The media only cares about profit, just like any other business.

So... they want it to be whatever you think it is. That way everybody is "shocked".

Good answer. Maybe not the only one though.

Thanks for listening.

It depends on the story. Sometimes they try to portray things as emotional or mental "rape" while other times they make it about the physical act.

The word rape has a very strong effect on people and the media uses it as often as they can.

rape means intended intercourse.

sexual harassment or sexual assault refers to inappropriate touching or fondling.

"Sexual harassment" also has a very loose definition. It could be anything from "explicit" comments to downright physical assault.

yes sorry in my haste i didn't realize i had lumped them together. it doesn't even have to be comments, can be a look, can be a poster in a cubicle, it can be leaving gifts, or any unwanted attention.

Rape only accurs if the women that in question has rich enough parents to buy airtime to report the so called rape. But other then that it's all domestic violence which is left to COPS.

I can't believe some of the posts on this thread.

If some of you had a sister or mother who was actually raped, you would think better of making so mind-numbingly stupid comments as...

The definition of rape is forced sexual penetration. This used to only mean vaginal penetration, but many countries have updated their laws to account for oral and anal penetration.

There is no such thing as "mental rape." Feminists and others who use such terms do themselves and the real victims a gross disservice.

I'm confused why you ask "what is the media's definition", as if it's different from the legal definition. The definition of rape is clear. It's defined, usually in great detail, in the respective laws of each country (or state).

Media often "reports" that someone is accused of rape, thereby easily bypassing their responsibility for fair and honest reporting and avoiding any vulnerability to slander actions. This doesn't devalue or deminish the actual definition in law, in fact and it shouldn't do so here.

Tawana Brawley and Al Sharpton, and yet Mr. Pagones has never been recompensated for Al's slanderous campaign against him.

it makes me wonder what people consider "rape." here on campus, they released a statement saying for girls to watch where they are walking at night. the campus had "emergency phones" put up EVERYWHERE, like every 1/8 of a mile, every direction. Some are closer than that even.

But here's the catch: They said that 1 out of 7 girls here on campus are raped every year.

How? I know considerably more than 7 girls and none of them have been raped (that I know of). I'm pretty close to them, really close to a lot of them, I don't see how it could be that high.

Girls, if you get wasted at a party and ask a guy to fuck you 'til the sun comes up, you aren't being raped. You are being stupid.

My heart goes out to all who were actually raped.
