What they dont tell you is that you cannot fly a jet supersonically over US soil (except for the military of course), and that it costs $10,000 PER HOUR for fuel to fly that thing. You better have a hell of a lot more than the 1 million they are asking for if you want to be able to actually fly the thing. And for a subsonic jet, there are much better things you could buy. Realistically, only someone like Larry Ellison could afford something like that.

So figure 9 mil for the jet (assembled), plus $15000 per hour of flight (10k fuel, 5k maintenance--those things require obscene amounts of it), plus all the hoops you would have to jump through with the FAA, and it is more of lawn ornament than a practical toy.

As much as that is true sailor, you cannot deny the badassness of owning a fighter jet. A lawn ornament? yes. but a damn cool one.

Some jack ass made the bid go up to 99 mil. There is actually a article on Yahoo right now about this. Original bid start was $1mil for the plane and $9 mil to have it assembled, painted, and be certified to fly. If i had $9 mil layin around...that would be sweet

This is really cool. A real fighter jet in your own back yard.

We have a couple of jumbo's (airbus and boeing) going pretty cheap down here in oz from an airline that went under a few years back. You're more than welcome to put in a bid for them......

I believe that there are areas in Southern California where you can take a private jet supersonic with the appropriate okays. There's a little desert town called Mojave, near Edwards AFB, that has a big airport used by various aerospace companies and entrepreneurs (Burt Rutan works out of there). The last time I was there, there were several Vietnam-era supersonic jet fighters in civilian colors parked in front of various hangars. Also long lines of jumbo jets and other mothballed passenger jets stored there by the airlines. Kinda surreal to see all that big flying iron just sitting out there in the middle of the desert. The road goes right by it all.

It's got to be one of the coolest things a guy can say:

"Hey James...gas up the jet we're heading out".

Once you get your jet you're gonna need somewhere to park it.

Why not just buy yourself a Me 262 replica brand new.

Now that would be a cool ride...
