Staying Awake

Ok everyone. I need some suggestions on how to stay awake for the 3 hour lecture I have on monday mornings (9-12). It's not my only morning class....just my only class I have trouble staying awake in. Anyone have any ideas, I'd appreciate it.

change positions alot, drink coffee, mountain dew, anything with caffeine and sugar. Take a morning jog, cold shower, excercise a bit before the lecture, bring a walkman, play little games with your neighbor, take a pad and doodle/draw away,
think up plots for a movie, computer-game, erm, write a song, compose a ballad, plan out a strategy for your favorite game, design a great role-play character

not that I've ever been bored during lectures :p

Hi there :)

there's already a *very* similar thread in Tilted Living about this.

Hopefully you can find some usefull infos contained therein.

Dextroamphetamine works for me.

I have a 9 am that drags on also, here is what I have learned. The brain gets tired because it is not thinking, so it goes to sleep. There are many things I do to stay awake. Text messaging (conversations keep the mind active), gum or food (eating for some reason keeps you awake), drink a big bottle of water before class and don't go to the bathroom at all until class is out. Those are some of the things I have done. I found that Text messaging works best for me. Good luck!

Sleep the night before...

If you don't live in a single then get your ass in one even if it means living in an off campus apartment.

eat breakfast. apples are good in the morning. a little breakfast (preferably with a friend of two) always gets me ready for class in the morning.

Prescription amphetamines are not available to all of us mate. ;)

A hefty cup of coffee works for me, perhaps try getting up earlier and running or doing some cardio? I find that gets me going for the day as well.

Join the world of recovering amphetimine fiends and buy massive amounts of energy drinks. Monsters are my favorite. Get 3 and chug them before class. Mabye save one of them for the middle of the lecture. Red Bulls are good 2 but you get half the amount in one can for the same price as a monster. Another good one is Rockstar. Liquid crack pretty much. These drinks will jumpstart your brain:)

Go to sleep earlier....if not, bring a tape recorder to class and continue to sleep.

If you're just going to muck about why bother going to the lecture? When I was at university, if there was a course where I didn't fel I got anything out of the lectures, I didn't go. There's no point going along to one if you're just gonna sit wasting time. You'd be better off going to the library and doing some reading.

I have such trouble staying awake in my 8 AM New Testament class...not the 8 am part, the BORING teacher. And I love studying religion...he's such a drone. I doze every morning in there...suprisingly, still got a 98/100 on my first test. Let's see how this next one goes...

Thanks for all the suggestions, even if I wasn't the one who asked for them...

mattevil 02-16-2004 05:39 PM

I only have this problem in those really cold air conditioned science rooms. I get so tired(even fully rested) that the chalkboard starts to move and I strain myself to keep my eyes open.

i always enjoy a good lecture.. but.

drink a lot of water... you wont be able to sleep cause you have to piss so bad... although you probably wont be able to focuss on the lecture either.
i wouldnt recomend caffine or sugar cause caffine makes you a drone & sugar wont get you through the whole class.

I think about women... that gets the blood pumping....

nukeu666 02-17-2004 03:32 AM

try apples

fatboss 02-17-2004 04:53 AM

Try and imagine what kind of underwear the girls are wearing :)

That sort of thing keeps my mind active.

And if you are lucky enough to get a glimpse of thong or something else, then that's an added bonus!

EruptiveDreamz 02-17-2004 04:55 AM

Well.. when my son and I had to go to court because of him breaking his collar bone. The atty we had suggested that my son should sit straight up in his seat butt against the back part of the chair and legs bent in front of him neatly next to each other. He said that if he did this he may find that he would have a better attention span in school as well. Don't think my son ever took the advice to school with him, but I am curious as to whether it makes a diffrence or not.

Ripp3r 02-17-2004 05:45 AM

I have similar problems during boring lectures and meetings at work.

Usually if the tone of the speakers voice is to monotonous the brain gets bored and you get tired.

a good way to keep the brain active is to think up and ask questions as much as possible, it will change the rythem of the speaker and it will make the lecture more interesting if possible.

I found that doodling or making a lot of notes keeps me awake and attentive as well.

Aletheia 02-17-2004 05:49 AM

To stay awake in class I usually draw. Asking questions helps alot to.

Redjake 02-19-2004 07:33 PM

ask questions, like Aletheia said. you will be rejuvenated for at least twenty minutes after. I used to do this in Accounting all the time.

KUGR 02-19-2004 07:52 PM

Redbull :) Either that or get plenty of sleep the night before.

Fremen 02-19-2004 08:02 PM

I used No Doz in highschool. Caffeine pills, I believe they are.

Boo 02-19-2004 08:18 PM

Unk Boo says.....

Force yourself to eat better every day. Avoid the processed CRAP out there. Caffeine should only be used in light moderation.

Go nighty night at the same time each and every night.

WAKE up every day at the same time. EXERCISE, get in shape. Do 30 min on the treadmill early AM.

Teach yourself to do these things early in life as old "dogs" like me are hard to teach.

Woof Woof!

P.S. Do something nice for your dad tonight.
