Baby in stroller dragged 1.5k in US hit and run survives

February 5, 2004 - 3:21PM

A baby trapped in her stroller has survived being dragged 1.5 kilometres lodged in the grill of a four-wheel drive which hit and killed her father in the United States.

Police have charged a man over the hit-and-run, and allege the driver was drunk when the incident happened last night.

The vehicle hit Deborah Young, her father, Roland Young Jr, 20, of Hamtramck, and her mother, Sharita Wilson, 19, on a dark stretch of road in Clinton Township, northeast of Detroit.

Brian Yonka, who was travelling in the opposite direction, said the four-wheel drive appeared to cross the white line on the road's right edge before hitting the family and continuing along the road.

He stopped to help the victims and identify the vehicle.

"I turned to look because I was trying to get a licence plate number but all I could see was sparks and stuff coming out from underneath the jeep," Yonka, 23, said.

The sparks apparently were caused by the stroller.

It had become lodged in the grill with the baby still inside, and was dragged along on the pavement as the vehicle sped away, police said.

Yonka did not see the stroller and police didn't learn about the baby until her mother asked paramedics about her.

The driver apparently stopped about 1.5km from the crash scene, freed the mangled stroller from the grill and left it, with the baby still inside.

Police later found the child who suffered cuts to her face, was listed in fair condition today, along with her mother.

Robert W Gallas, 47, of Clinton Township, faces six counts of operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

All carry maximum five-year sentences except one count of operating while intoxicated, causing death, which carries a 15-year maximum.

Gallas' lawyer, Brian Legghio, entered innocent pleas for him, said Linda Anderson, criminal clerk. Bond was set at $US1 million ($A1.32 million).

Oh my God....that's horrible!

Some of the stuff that happens nowadays, I just can't believe it. If I think about it for too long I just get angry and depressed.

Yeah, put this guy away for a long fucking time.

This deserves:
  • 5 years - drunk driving
  • life - hit and run
  • life w/o parole - hit and run causing death
  • life - hit and drag

Some of you should be very happy Im not in charge of the judicial system, with charges like that, after the trial Id have him strung up by his balls and put on display in the mess hall of the county jail.

Faith in humanity -50 points.

I see Numist is a firm proponent of the persian way of punishment.

And what's with this obsession with sodomy alot of you have?

I agree he should be locked away for a long time. However what stringing him up by his balls would accomplish, I have no idea.

Deterrent for others? The problem with alcohol is that people think they are still sober enough to drive, they can't draw the line. So when they are drunk, that deterrent won't work as well. Get ready to do alot of ball-stringing

Actually, no.. Im a firm believer in moral law, not written law.

An eye for an eye is not a good system of law (one of the worst, actually), but thats a discussion for somewhere else.

But crimes that disagree with morality this strongly deserve stiff punishment.

Stringing up by the balls - just something I thought of in order to properly make apparent what I think of him. Theres no excuse for drunk driving, you can always sleep in your car, even if you get a ticket, its cheaper than a life.

My rule: When I drink, its either one drink or many. If Ive had one, I dont drive for at least 3 hours afterward, if Ive had many, I have a DD or I have plans that dont include the road.

Theres no excuse, even if you think you are ok to go, you should also think: 'hold on, Ive been drinking...'

Plus, dragging a baby 1.5 kilometers under your car.... You have to be very drunk to do that... even a hit and run person (also an extremely low form of life, like the type found on the bottom of my shoes) would stop and remove it before running away.

The legal system is seriously messed up, it needs to be rethought completely. This guy shouuld be serving multiple "life" sentences. It's premeditated murder as soon as he got behind the wheel drunk.

Thank god they caught him. There's at least a little bit of comfort to be found in knowing that he'll have to pay for what he's done.

The poor mother -- all alone and so young! This type of crime is what angers me most! The victims are innocent and unfortunately the driver will get out and likely drive drunk again.

You have NO idea how much I agree with that statement. You make the choice to drink. This is legal. You make the choice to get drunk off of your ass. This is legal. Then, you make the choice to stick a set of keys in the ignition. This is legal. But, then you start the engine, and throw it in gear. This ISN'T legal. Then you mow someone down. This isn't legal, regardless of your degree of soberness. Then you fucking run?!?! C'mon. You knew when you left for the bar that if you drove home, you'd put your life and EVERYBODY that you passed lives at risk. If you make it home in one piece, good for you. YOU GOT LUCKY...THIS TIME! What about next time? Or the time after that? The same ideas still apply, but you killed somebody. When you left the bar drunk, and decided to drive home, you decided that your life was more important than anybody else's, and DIDN'T care.

I FUCKING HATE PEOPLE THAT DRINK AND DRIVE. YOU DESERVE NOTHING!

Sorry, y'all...just had to vent. I feel very strongly on this topic.

when a drunk driver who killed someone is sent to jail the guards should spread the word he's in for child rape.

when a drunk driver is caught drunk driving without murder they should be dropped off in a ghetto with a big racist sign on them ala Die Hard III.

I would personally kill any drunk driver who killed a family member or close friend, and I really don't care how immature or unprogressive that sounds. This is one thing I do NOT forgive for any reason. To me DUI murders like this are as bad as molestation. If I can get rides and taxis, anyone else can. Just get someone to drop you off at a bar/club and stay there. Get your drink on and call a cab...or better yet stay over at a "friend's" house.

Actually, it's not.

Much as I abhor drink driving, it's patently NOT premeditated murder.

Either way, he deserves a lot of jail time for the hit and run portion of the crime, if not the drink driving causing death alone.

To me, this was the worst part. Wouldn't the baby have been scared and crying? Couldn't he have heard it? And he does nothing?

I swear, between this and the girl found this morning behind the church, I want to volunteer for Bush's Mars mission. However, when I get there, I'm just not coming back.
