Would you hire yourself?

This is from an e-commerce newsletter I get.
I think most of it can relate to any business.

Would You Hire Yourself?

If you have dreams of being your own boss, realize that it takes much more than a marketable idea and some financing - you need a diverse skill set to enable your dream to come to fruition.

A critical self-evaluation will assess whether you have the necessary attributes for e-business success. Take a look at this checklist to get an idea if you have what it takes:

Courage - It takes a certain amount of bravery to leave behind the nine-to-five to try to make it on your own. Coupled with courage is the ability to withstand risk. If the thought of running your own business keeps you awake at night, (and not because you're brainstorming) you might want to pursue something with a higher degree of safety.
Strong work ethic - Don't even think of slacking. Being a Netrepreneur isn't always about freedom - it's often about sacrifice.
Interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills - This trio helps you to get along, keep track and guide your staff, respectively.
Business experience - This includes being able to articulately correspond, being open to systemization, and understanding the basics of entrepreneurialism.
Financial expertise - If you have trouble balancing your own checkbook, one of your first orders of business should be to hire an accountant or bookkeeper.
Technical sensibility - There is an abundance of skilled Web designers and developers to build it for you but you should still have a solid working knowledge of the Internet.
Salesmanship - To efficiently promote yourself, your idea, your company, your products, your experience ... everything.
Multi-tasking skills - You'll be handling a number of responsibilities ... usually all simultaneously.
Passion -- For the business, not the money. Dollar signs shouldn't cloud your judgment.
Patience - The rewards of hard work may take some time to pay off. Temper your need for instant gratification.
Perseverance - This is connected to knowing when to walk away. You can try and try and try but you have to know when the efforts are fruitless.
Vision - Having the ability to see opportunities that differ from your pre-conceptions.
Creativity - In addition to aesthetics, creativity is needed for effective problem solving.
Luck - Being at the right Web address at the right time can play a part in how successful you are.
If you find that you are deficient in some of the more critical components of business, you have a number of options:

Find methods to develop your strengths to overcome your weaknesses.
Hire a professional in that particular area.
Enlist a partner that can compensate for the skills you lack.
Ask for help from other entrepreneurs.
When embarking on your e-commerce enterprise, check your ego at the splash page. Being a start-up Netrepreneur often involves grunt work like going to the post office, packing orders and making deliveries.

OK that's the info.

Now the question.
Would you hire yourself?

sixate 05-02-2003 12:44 PM

I feel that I can do any job. If I don't know how to do it I'll fucking learn it and be good at it too. So fuck yes I'd hire myself.

apetaster 05-02-2003 01:01 PM

If there were more of me where I work they would not have to hire so many mes that the don't have to lay me off.

Tirian 05-02-2003 01:16 PM

I'd hire myself, but then I'd have to motivate myself.

Empty_One 05-02-2003 01:23 PM

Yes I would hire myself. In a second. I know that I can do anything in a work situation. Just let me know what my responsibilities are, and when you want me to start, and I'll go learn the job in the meantime.

I have been successfully self-employed for quite some time so I guess I'd hire my self again - In fact I'd love to do just that - I wish there were three more of me and we all worked shifts - Bet I'd be even more successful than I am now with my current employees.

termnl 05-02-2003 02:27 PM

Yes. I have worked a variety of jobs (construction, auto mechanic, generator mechanic, and the finally settled down as a developer/analyst) and have excelled at all of them.

Its not something I try to do(doing good work)....its just what I do naturally.....so I think I am a damn good employee.

Halx 05-02-2003 02:29 PM

I'd disagree with myself too much. I'm too opinionated to work under someone as opinionated as myself. I work better if I'm the only one of me in the room.

JadziaDax 05-02-2003 03:30 PM

What Halx said ;)

(besides, I'd argue with myself too much)

Arock 05-02-2003 03:40 PM

I'd hire me, but a female version. I tend to feel like Halx and JadziaDax, I think if it were a female me I'd work much better with her/me.

JumpinJesus 05-02-2003 03:42 PM

If I'm the boss, why would I hire someone overqualified to work under me? So no, I'd thank myself for applying, and tell me that I'm too qualified. I'd then get mad and sue me.

clavus 05-02-2003 04:26 PM

Practically speaking, I am my own boss. I'm always a little pissed that I'm not working harder. I'd probably hire me, but eventually fire myself.

World's King 05-02-2003 04:52 PM

Hell no. I have the work ethic of... a Sloth?

Evan 05-02-2003 05:40 PM

yeah i would hire myself, if i could like quit everything else i do at life, and i had no life, i would work all the time... unfortuately, i have a life.... poo

drewg 05-02-2003 05:46 PM

I might, but I'm not so sure since I'm a slacker.

But If it was a job I'd knew the other me would like, then I'd hire me since I know I'm good at doing what I like to do.

Mr. Creosote 05-03-2003 11:35 AM

I think so. But I'd have to keep me interested or I'd slack off! I bore easily if I'm not motivated.

Mr_A 05-03-2003 12:49 PM

No way.

maximusveritas 05-03-2003 02:11 PM

Based on what's on my resume, yes. Based on reality, no.

sierra2774 05-03-2003 05:09 PM

I would definately hire myself. When I worked full time, I was the best at it. I don't do anything, unless it is good.

greytone 05-03-2003 05:18 PM

Absolutely, I am a very good employee.

reconmike 05-03-2003 05:34 PM

Yes I would hire myself, I have disclipine and can handle high stress and deadlines well.

ARTelevision 05-03-2003 06:05 PM

I would, but only because I know I would hire the best team of people. It's all about teamwork. That's the key to getting the job done.

Fallon 05-03-2003 07:54 PM

I think I might hire myself, but make sure to keep all of my computers offline. If you give me online stuff, you'll find me playing games on popcap all day, or posting on here.

gibber71 05-04-2003 07:06 AM

I'd hire myself then fire the bumb who hired me.

Angel 05-04-2003 03:33 PM

Absolutely. I am a responsible, dependable, highly motivated self starter and I would want the same attributes in an employee.

phredgreen 05-04-2003 03:41 PM

of course i would. anyone who wouldn't hire themselves has self-confidence issues they need to work on or at least has a working knowledge of what shit they need to get together in order to be marketable.

raeanna74 05-04-2003 04:45 PM

Yes I'd hire myself. I have my own home business. Going pretty well though I'm loosing a client because of the ending school year. I'm searching for a new one but have a couple potential ones already. I'm self motivated and hard working. I just need my own accountant because I can't do math for anything in the world.

hrdwareguy 05-05-2003 07:30 AM

I'd hire me if the job called for it. Then I'd pay me as much as I could afford :)

SeXuaLSoYBeaN 05-05-2003 05:09 PM

I wouldn't hire myself, because I'm a lazy-ass bum.

ICER 05-05-2003 08:26 PM

Not in a million years. which is why I'm self employed.
