What would you do if you didn't have to work?

You just found out a long lost relative has died and left you his fortune. You are financially secure for the rest of your life.

What do you do now?

omega2K4 01-19-2004 12:10 AM

Well, I don't work now. And I SHOULD be financially secure for the rest of my life, or the majority of it. So...What do I do now?

StormBerlin 01-19-2004 12:29 AM

I would probably build the animal sanctuary I've been planning since I was twelve. After that, probably not a whole bunch. Budget permitting, I would pay off all my parents and brother's loans.

And how, pray tell, did you accomplish that? :D

Myself, I'd keep the job I have no because it's fun and I enjoy it and I can make my own hours, and then I'd sit on my ass for the rest of my life doing whatever I pleased. Nothing to specific. Travel to many places, etc, and lots of other stuff.

analog 01-19-2004 01:05 AM

If i was secure, I'd just do nothing for the rest of my life.

If I was rich as hell, I'd build myself a house. It would have its own theater room, kick-ass pool room, and be awesome in general.

Mr.Deflok 01-19-2004 01:48 AM

I'd continue to work but I'd put more of an effort into finishing my novels after I travel to Japan. I'd also love to build a tradtional Japanese house high up in the misty hills away from modern day machinations.

ender0333 01-19-2004 02:01 AM

Simple. I would spend it all. Then cry. Then go back to normal life.

Snoogans 01-19-2004 03:16 AM

Live happily ever after.

jay-g 01-19-2004 04:12 AM

Go shopping
Play golf
Go out to eat all the time
Travel
Go on road trips
Gamble
Start a foundation of some sort. Something to do after i got sick of the above things.

spived2 01-19-2004 05:12 AM

I would build myself a bunny ranch like hugh heffner and live with half naked/naked women all day long

Maybe even take some pictures and sell em!!

ARTelevision 01-19-2004 05:39 AM

I'd do the same stuff I do now - all day, just like I do now. Collaborate with people, mess around with computers, come up with stuff to put on the Net, build things, home and land projects, ride horses, go to the beach, camp out, go on boat rides, make love, go fishin'...

n0b 01-19-2004 05:43 AM

I would jump in my car and travel the states. Next, Europe. That should keep me busy for a while.

Destrox 01-19-2004 06:29 AM

I'd probably take a few years off and simply travel.

After that I'd need to get some kind of job, we as people need to socialize on a daily basis.

So maybe some kind of bartending job.

I'd still join the Army. I never did it for the money, and that would be even more reason so!

Jim Kata 01-19-2004 07:14 AM

I'd take care of my loved ones debts....travel....and spend more time on making music.

streak_56 01-19-2004 07:15 AM

Travel and Play or Coach Hockey

ChrisJericho 01-19-2004 07:18 AM

Train jiu-jitsu everyday, allday and travel.

sexymama 01-19-2004 07:31 AM

Pay off my debts.
Take a year's leave to travel.
Make love every day! (Oh, I do that now!)
Catch up on my scrap books (that may take 5 years off!)
Return to work and a "normal" life, maybe part-time, the following year because I LOVE my career.
Donate, donate, donate.

bonehed1 01-19-2004 09:40 AM

I would sit on my ass and play EverQuest 2 when it comes out all day long....

glasscutter43 01-19-2004 09:55 AM

Form my own kind of 4-H club.

Holland
Heinekin
Hookers
Hash

Oh, and go fishing every day.

become a 'perpetual student'.

*sighs dreamily*

..of course 1st i'd take care of debts/needs of me and loved ones..
and do a bit of travelling in between learnings..

Jonsgirl 01-19-2004 10:02 AM

I'd donate it all to TFP. :)

Or, just sit on my ass all day having my every whim fufilled by the legions of cabana boys (and cabana girls too, because, hey, I'm an equal opprutunity kind of employer!) I just hired.

WarWagon 01-19-2004 10:50 AM

I'd build and race my cars 24/7.

jujueye 01-19-2004 11:04 AM

1. Leave job (good friends, bad mgr and boring work).
2. Travel.
3. Pay off debt and debt of close friends.
4. Buy a home big enough to hold state of the art audio and theater gear.
5. Donate randomly to charitable causes at my own discrection.
6. Learn to _________ (which would change monthly)

rockzilla 01-19-2004 11:08 AM

I'd probably keep on the plan that I've got set out for myself, I'd just have a hell of an easier time doing it.

I'd go to school full time and work part time, instead of the other way around. I'd travel the world, and try to work in as many kitchens as possible, which is easier if you tell them you'll work for free. Then I'd buy some vineyards out in BC and open a Bed and Breakfast.

World's King 01-19-2004 12:28 PM

I'd do the same shit I'm doin' now.

I'd just have a solid gold toilet.

Mehoni 01-19-2004 01:35 PM

Become a stalker.

Instead of wasting my money on college, I invested in various things.

Bamrak 01-19-2004 02:08 PM

Am I the only person who had Office Space flashbacks? :)

I would do the following:
1. Buy a modest house surrounded by a forest
2. Get out of debt along with close family and friends (they'd get a lump sum to be fair)
3. Begin reading and learning everything I can
4. Learn how to be handy- woodworking and building electronic things would be fun
5. Have fun ( this should be priority anyway)

Heheh...

...two women at the same time, dude! :D

aintyoboyfriend 01-19-2004 02:22 PM

I would prolly go crazy.

Or I would just keep working for the fun of it. I really love my job, and am not too keen on sitting around and doing nothing.

Awesome - one of the smart and capable minority. Kudos to you sir. College isn't a waste for everyone, but it certainly can be for some who have the skills to be monetarily successful without it. Congratulations on recognizing that in yourself.

bonehed1 01-19-2004 02:29 PM

sit at home eating papa johns and watching the spice channel all day, everyday lol

dy156 01-19-2004 02:31 PM

I'd buy a big ranch, help out family members, then travel the world and read alot when I wasn't out working. Then, when I got bored of that, I'd go back to work, but work for myself, and maybe run for office.

milkyp 01-19-2004 02:37 PM

I would buy a business off of someone and not have to work for anybody but myself.

While it's not true for everyone, for myself college has been anything but a waste of money. However, I do know of people who are quite the opposite. In order for me to do what I want to do, an extensive college education is required, and I've been nothing but stimulated by these years so far, but thats because I went out of the way to ensure I was taking challenging courses that actually required work.

Oh, and if I was secure, I'd still finish my education (debt free....wow) and work off and on, but never more than a day or two a week. The rest of the time, build a house on a lake somewhere and fish, hike, and all that good outdoorsy stuff...as well as two chicks at the same time man... ;)

nash 01-19-2004 03:28 PM

Open up a coffeeshop and/or travel.

mulletJeb 01-19-2004 03:30 PM

omega2k4: while I respect your achievement (and am rather curious to hear the details if you would share), it's a good idea to invest in yourself now and go to college. Seems like you've found something you're pretty good at, so go and get a business degree and you'll be a pro.

mulletJeb 01-19-2004 03:30 PM

nash: what kinda coffee shop? :D

onodrim 01-19-2004 03:32 PM

If I had no budget and nothing but free time, I would travel like crazy. That would be first priority. Then I'd buy every single DVD I ever wanted, and watch them all. I also love to read, so I'd collect a massive library, and spend hours with a good book. Then I'd invest the rest, settle down, and raise a family. :)
