speaking as one myself, I think the new trend towards "asian" is contrived and lazy. Unfortunately it seems that it has been supported by the US census bureau, since 2000. Their official groupings are:

White
Black
American Indian and Alaskan Native, and
Asian and Pacific Islander

This last group covers everybody from Turkey, Pakistan, Australian aboriginies, mainland asian, Japanese (including Ainu) indonesians, philippinos, Hawaiians, polynisians etc....


I myself prefer 'Oriental' as a large class (understanding that it is the Latin term for eastern, and applies to everybody east of Istanbul) but if I want to get specific, I am Han.
