I get the impression that there's a history behind the word "Oriental" that Asian-Americans prefer to be distanced from, but that's all behind my time.

At any rate, it's generally accepted that Oriental is an outdated term. Kind of like calling a black person a Negro.

I get offended when somebody gets offended if I use a word that they consider offensive.

Educate the person to your logic but please don't start thinking that they are racist.

Id have to say that my current girlfriend is my favorite Asian chick. She is from Osaka Japan and she came here about 6 years ago so she still has a very thick, and cute, accent.

Oh and by the way, she really does get offended when people call her Oriental. I think it has something to do with the "slave" labor that the evil white people brought from Japan in the wild west days to build the railroads on the west coast.

Actually, I'd say it's closer in terms of being dated to calling an African-American black. Note: not trying to bust your balls, as I often use "black" and "white" without thinking, but I believe that the term "Oriental" being changed to "Asian" is a much more modern thing, more closely associated with the change to African-American, rather than the upgrade from "negro".
