Humanity Evolved--A Cyborg Speaks
This is a story from the AP that's appearing lots of places. Here it is at Salon: Link to Article.
Quote:
Would you be a cyborg? What uses can you see for this technology beyond those above? As for myself, I'd LOVE to have an always-on Internet connection that I carry around with me. Accessing the web on my laptop via my cell phone is as close as I've come, but I gotta tell you, the freedom of IMing and posting to TFP from the back seat of a moving car is an INCREDIBLE thing. Imagine if that was just the way we all were! |

many of us already are in a rudimentary way. You wear glasses like I do to have clear vision, you're a cyborg. You would be almost blind or at least blurry without this mechanical interface. If any one has pins or artificial limbs, they are cyborgs in a basic sense. They are no longer 100% natural. This Eyetap also has a media grandfather...the Walkman.

I like this guy.
Id definitely wear one irl for work and school, but I think for times that Im just out having fun with my lady or generally doing other, non serious things Id leave it at home. I would probably break it in some of my activities, and besides, I know my g/f would complain if I wore one around 24/7. Definitely would use it on the job though, and keep it close at hand otherwise. |

Very cool, but I can easily see this being misused. Imagine corporations "hacking" your wearable PC so that instead of personalized messages from friends, you're bombarded by tailored advertising on every surface, a la Minority Report. Information wars, right around the corner, waged on the human body. Creepy. Stuff like this pushed frontiers of privacy vs. free speech vs. free market. I know which side I'd come down on, but I'm not sure our society would go in the direction I'd like to see.

yes, good point Holo.
our technological superstructure has rendered humans transparently "technologized" since we crawled down from the trees. it is...the "massage" of McLuhan's "medium" today, of course, we are already thoroughly cyberneticized.

I hope somewhere somebody put a comma in the wrong place. He sounds like somewhat of a fanatic and such, but I guess you need those people to bring forth the new technologies. I would like to see this come about, but not to the point of movies, where they are generally implanted and such. Give people the opportunity to use it, but they should at least be able to take it off

I find this to be a glimpse of this to come in the distant future, but what I am looking forward to in the short term is an all blanketing wireless system that'll let me connect wherever i am. Just think that would be really sweet. It's already here in a limited form at my university.

If his system is based on Linux, I hope SCO doesn't tell him he's going to need a license to 'borg himself.
Which brings me to this: When we are cyborgs, will corporations sue us personally over software fights? Would I have to shut myself down? What if I catch a virus?

I'd have to agree with what you said: this will technology will be misused, not to mentioned abused to no end. Quote:
