I think they did what they were supposed to quite well: entertain. Who cares if it was fake? Pro-wrestling is fake (well not entirely but enough to discount it from really being 100% real) but people keep watching anyway. Besides, unlike 100% of American pop these days, Tatu at least had inspired, energetic beats that were actually listenable.

What does it matter who created the "art"? Although I like neither Milli Vanilli nor Tatu, I cannot dent that there was a pretty good producer/arranger/Svengali behind both acts.

The genius behind Tracy Chapman's breakthrough album was her producer/arranger. While her songwriting is pretty good, it is unquestionably the way the songs were arranged and recorded that made the album.

Rundgren, Spector, Don Was, Quincy Jones. Most of us have several of their CDs, but we don't even know it.
