10 Year old coke
While cleaning out my closet I found a six pack of Coke that I saved from the Inagural Year of the colorado Rockies. Anyway, Im contemplating trying one, anyone ever had 10 year old coke? Any guesses on what it will taste like? (junk im sure)
|
probably a lot like it would the day it was made, only a lot more sour and bitter. Bacteria growth is a problem, plus there won't be any fizz. Just a guess though. Try it and tell us what it tasted like. Unless it kills you. Then we will take your absence as a sign not to drink 10 year old coke.
|
DRINK IT!!!
I'm betting that it will taste the same, or better than normal coke. Let us know what happens! |
Only drink it if the top hasn't "popped up." If it has, it could have food poisoning. Other than that, I'm curious so let us know what it does taste like, please.
|
I still have an original 1994 World Cup promotional glass coke bottle, unopened. I guess that is also 10 years old.
I think I'll just wait another 10 years and maybe try it. ;) Bacterial growth? How? It's sealed! :) |
Please drink it. Report back!
Please! You'll probably like it so much that the entire 6-pack will be gone in an hour. By the way, I'll bet that closet cleaning project was a long time coming. |
anaerobic bacteria growth could be a problem in a sealed environment, however, the gas generated from that action would long ago bloated the cans.
If the cans are still in the shape they were in 10-years ago, I say go for it. Or, wait... I read about a man that took several bottles of Coke overseas during WW2, shared all but one with his comrades. He brought that bottle back and still has it, minus a bit lost to a house fire that boiled the bottle. Don't remember where I read/heard that, but its true. Coke keeps for a long time. |
I have a 10oz bottle of Coke from when the Tennessee Volunteers' football team won the SEC championship in 1985.
|
got a friend with a case of the last glass bottled mountain dew- she's saving it for something, forget what...
|
i have a bottle of blue nun (white wine) a friend gave me back in 1978. i think the label sez 1975. i don't plan to ever drink it, but i'd imagine it's not so great any more anyway...
ewwwww don't drink that coke! why even risk it? i'll send ya a dollar to go get a fresh bottle. |
If for no other reason than the sense of discovery, drink one.
It's not like beer or wine. I don't think it ever goes bad. |
sell it on eBay :)
|
Are you two serious about wine not being good after x amount of years?
Anyway, drink the coke! LOL< I want to know what it tastes like, but I don't have any that old. Send it to me. /smooth remains disappointed in the type of of coke you found... |
I drink some 3 year old pepsi before. Was very flat and fake sugar tasting. Like those sugar free candies you can get.

Nah, swill it down and report back. Ya know, all in the name of science! ;) |

Anyhow, I'd try to sell it on eBay. Set a high reserve price so if you don't get at least like $100 for it you can just drink it instead, but it'll be a lot more beneficial to you to sell it I think. I'm willing to guarantee it'll be flat and taste like crap. |
I just recentley drank one os those Star Wars Episode One cans of pepsi. So that's about 5 years old. It was very flat and had a weird taste to it. My stomach didnt feel right after drinking it, but after an hour or so went by I didnt feel so bad....so go for it! Im intrigued to hear what happens
|
Oooooh 10 years.. dang. I would be a little afraid to try it. Do tell us what happens if you do drink some as far as taste and any reactions you may get. How many years ago was it Coca Cola quit using coke as an ingredient?
|
i've got a 10 year old bottle of whiskey here......watta you guys think......should i drink it?

Drink Up! If anything, it will give you a metallic taste in your mouth from the zinc (zinc keeps the cans from corroding) wearing off of the inside of the can from the acidic Coke.

hrm... its been a while since 89transam replied... maybe he DID die... uh oh...
|
I dunno, mabye I will later today (not in the mood right now). There are some identical ones on ebay right now, so if anyone wanted to drink some old coke you too could do so...

If it did the Phish noise when you pulled the tab, i would think it still drinkable. There might be some carmelization of the corn syrup used a the sweetner. The phosphoric acid content should limit any bacteria growth. Like was said in another reply, the zinc might leach from the can metel due to the acidic content, but that would cause the can to leak.
If you do plan to try it, i'd make sure some one else was aware of it. Also, find the number for your local poison control center so it would be handy if something struck you down. Good luck on your great sceintific adventure. |

BTW, I assume that the "Colorado Rockies" are a sports team. Which sport? |
BTW, here's a fun one: unopened beer and soda cans.

I'll find out if I win the bottles I've bid on. Of course, they're glass, with metal caps. Might not be the same.
|
10 year old Coke? I'd sell it to Michael Jackson, because, well, you know... he likes...
bah, nevermind. Dunno where I was going with that one. |
my ma has a bottle of coke thats like 30 years old. It still *looks* like it'd taste the same the day it was made.
|
I won some old Coke. Let's see if he actually ships it.
|
I have some beer in the basement from when the Bengals went to the Super Bowl in 88. Definitely not going to try and drink that. I should sell a case or two on eBay.
|
Id say drink it! But first... throw it in the freezer for about 15 mins. Warm coke is the worst!

I could never pay 12 bucks for 5 cokes even if they were in crystal bottles  |

I stopped a couple of years ago. |
sell it on ebay
|
I had nothing to add here.....
|
Throw it at your noisy neighbor (if you have one) and go get a beer instead.
|
My advice is to make a rum & coke out of it. The alcohol might kill off any hazardous crap in it. Or it could just make the whole mess harder on your system. Eh, my brother is the biologist, not me.
|
yuk
|
10 year old Coke? Bah!
Let me know if someone gets ahold of some unopened "New Coke" or Crystal Pepsi. sk |
Wouldnt the coke break down?

About the best you could hope for now would be to mix it with some oil for a decent salad dressing. In order for most wines to be able to age well, they must have tannins in them, which mostly come from the seeds and skins of the grape (and give the wine its red color). Therefore, as a general rule, red wines age better than whites (which are made without the skins - that's why they're colorless) |

Takes 45 mins in my freezer to get a Mt. Dew nice and cold.. 15 mins won't cut it!
|
I wouldnt but then again I cant stand coke. 10 years of it sitting in the closet it might taste like a tin can. One more thing though you could make a few bucks selling it on ebay. Coke memorabilia is very collectable.

Stuff doesn't always get the big bucks, sure.
|
Okay, I just tried one of the Cokes from 1993. It was flat. The carbination seems to have slipped out through the glass and/or the cap and/or the seal between them. And it tasted a little "off".
Yuck. |
hehe, I imagine that old coke would taste just like old anything else .. same general flavor but has that old flat taste. dont think it would be to bad for ya just wont taste to great haha may as well try it or sell it on ebay for .99 cents and tack on a 15 dollar shipping charge ><

I have tasted 6 year old coke before and it justs tastes flatter and less sugary than regular coke. Also I'd like to mention that the older the bottle of wine is the better it will taste.

If you drink some i wouldnt drink the whole thing unless you taste a litle bit and you know its good. I dont think it could hurt you that bad.

While chardonnay and chablis grapes are green, and produce white wines; and cabernet and merlot grapes are purple, and produce red wines, there are exceptions - for example, pinot grigio grapes are dark, but produce a white wine. Why? - because the seeds, stems, and skins are generally not used in making white wine. That's why white wines have less tannins. Tannins are also a pigment, so you could generally assume that the darker the grape, the more tannins it contains. But wood also contains tannins, and many wines absorb tannins from the oak barrels in which they are stored. Not only do tannins act as a preservative, but many wines that contain a lot of tannins are undrinkable for years - until the tannins start to mellow (tannins are astringent - they make your mouth pucker and dry out). That's why older wines are more expensive - they must be stored for years before they can be enjoyed. Think of them as an investment - every year they go up in price. OK - I just realized this is way TMI for a coke thread. Sorry. |

I still have 11 tall bottles of old coke from just before the new coke fiasco. Real Sugar not corn syrup. I started with a case
I last had a bottle about 2 years ago and it still tastes great. |

still no reply?? :D
|
eh?
|
Hm, I wouldn't bother...I've had old coke from the deposit bottles and it just tasted kinda stale. I dont know how old it was tho.
I've got a half liter of coke, and a bottle of sprite that I picked up in mexico about 3 years ago...unopened, but they are gonna stay that way. |
I would think it wouldn't be changed because they're air sealed.
Don't quote me on that one, though. |
Okay, I won't.
|
sell it to fox tv and make another stupid reality tv show out of it, "man and his ten year old coke" and if u live, u get a million dollars? hows that sound? lol haha, have fun with whatver u do.
|
Ah, come now-you can't do that and then decide not to drink it. Dang.
|
Drink it in a 16 oz glass with 3 shots of Jack. Smoothe it out a little
|
Whoops, repost. Sorry

The ones I used to get were 8oz, which were not returnable. The 6.5oz and 10oz, OTOH, are. They're the ones with the deposit as I now recall. They won't sell the 6.5oz bottles anymore unless you bring 'em in, as they're that rare. Hm. Looks like the 10oz bottles have reached that point too. Bummer. Wish they'd just make more of them. I wonder what would be required to make more... (edit) By the way, I have one bottle left. I can't have it until I reach a particular personal goal. Of course, I can't order more either. |
If it's any consolation, my mom still has a bottle of Canadian Whiskey from when my grandparents were married (something like 1949). Have drank some of it before...not too bad.
Liquor lasts forever. |
89transam what happened ?
You posted on the 27th so you are still alive, what happened to the cokes. |
This guy's good - gets us all hot and bothered and then splits....
|
dont drink it...thats just nasty....you will probably get some funky bacteria in your system and jack you up.
|
I emailed the fine people at Coca-Cola and got a pretty quick reply.
This is what they have to say: \begin coke's reply\ The date on the packaging is the "Optimum Taste Date." This is the date by which we recommend you consume the beverage for the best taste. The complete date code is located on the bottom of cans and on the neck of bottles. For our diet brands, the optimum taste period is 13 weeks. For sugar-sweetened brands, this period is 39 weeks. Since there is nothing in our Company brands that should spoil, we expect that our brands are safe to consume beyond the date. \end coke's reply\ So, Coke says drink it... but since we haven't heard back from the guy, maybe he DID drink it and is too sick to check the board... |

I saved a bunch of the Star Wars Pepsi cans...a couple of them leaked, though, and I got syrup all over the shelf...boo.
Hmm...why would some cans leak, and some not? |
