RU-21...real or hype?
A recent Fark post discussed RU-21, an over the counter solution for the toxic effects of drinking, including relief from a hangover. Evidently, the KGB developed it so that their agents could drink others under the table without ill effects. It currently is the rage among Hollywood party people.
I know nothing about it, and just wondered if any on this forum have tried the stuff. If so, let me know what you think, as I like beer a lot, and would love not to hurt myself by consuming mass quantities, if I can avoid it. |

Zargix, the name is a joke of sorts, a play on the morning after pill, with the 21 representing legal drinking age. I saved the link that the Fark post led me to, if you're interested:

As far as I know it doesn't help you drink anyone under the table, but you can drink the same amount and not have the same hangover. I've heard of a hangover pill that works fairly well, but I don't think this is the one I've heard about.

Just drink a lot of water before you go to bed. You may have to get up and piss once or twice, but that'll take care of the worst of it. Alcohol has a dehydrating effect, and it is responsible for a lot of the hungover feeling. Always worked for me.

If this pill is real, the best it could do is allow you to retain more water into your system. All a hangover is is just bad dehydration (alcohol steals water from your body).

You could get the same results by supplementing the amino acid L-Cysteine (which I would almost guarentee this "hangover pill's" main ingredient is) and creatine too as well. This hangover pill isn't special... just an amino acid 'coctail' with a fancy name

There's no question whether it's real or not, you can buy it at GNC stores around here. I've read it actually works too, won't 100% cure your hangover, but certainly will help.

Canucks call 'em RU18 Pure bullshit if you ask me. Sounds like something out of Star Trek where starfleet crew could drink their ass off and not get wasted...
You know what will cure your hangover? It's call..... COFFEE!

Only cure for a hangover is drinking less. The ru21 is pure bullshit IMO. I read an article in a mag on it recently where a group tried it out. Needless to say, the ones who drank a lot still got drunk and hungover.

I am a total pussy with booze. I get hungover REALLY easily. There used to be this stuff called "XS" that claimed the same benefits as RU21 does.
Lemme tell you, XS worked! If RU21 is made from the same stuff, it probably helps a lot. Of course, now I just quit at 2 beers, so I will not be able to give you a definitive answer.

It's called a large glass of water by your bed when you pass out. Once you get up to piss, and you will get up to piss, you simply drink what's in the glass and refill. Repeat until morning for no hangover.

OOOH I like that one too, but then in my case I just blackout instead of passout, so time passes when I"m still unconcious. So I might as well rest when I reach that point, as opposed to other stupid things that pass my way.

I'd like to know if it works or not from someone here who's actually tried it... I think it might help, but taking one doesn't mean you can drink as much as you want and not get alcohol poisoning, nor does it mean that you are guaranteed to not have a hangover the next day.
I've found that the best way to prevent a hangover is to drink on a full stomach, drink a glass of water between each alcoholic drink, and then drink more water before bed and each time you piss.

I saw something about an anti-hangover pill on some news show, the subjects of an experiment had to take like two pills (with half the group given a placebo) an hour before they started drinking, then two more for each 3 or 4 drinks after that. The next day they asked the subjects how they felt. statistically, the pill was no more effective than a placebo, and about the same as the subjects who took nothing.
If you don't want a hangover, don't drink so much.
