What is your state/area known for?
Washington is known for coffee (Starbucks), Boeing, rain (although it really doesn't rain that much here), Microsoft, seafood, and apples.
How about where you live? |
hmm Massachusetts is known for Puritans, The witch trials, chowdah, the kennedys, Alot of revolutionary war hullabaloo, a baseball team that seems like it will never break its curse, and amongsty other things a democratic state run by a republican governor (wtf?!?!).
My area (western mass) is known for wonderful senery in the fall time of year, a whole lotta snow, and my town has a tremendous population of Portogues folk. I think they are trying to assimilate me  |
Drunken college students.
|
my state: well, New South Wales is known for, um, well, great beaches that line the coast, the Blue Mountains, the Hunter Valley, Byron Bay (pretty and green) and Sydney.
my city: Sydney is known for the 2000 Olympics, its fireworks, its friendly people, its stunning harbour, its big bridge, its glam opera house, its pub crawling, its beautiful women, manly and bondi beaches (although its common knowledge to locals that they are not the best beaches) and its annual bushfires. my neighbourhood: well, my area is probably known for not being known, if that makes any sense. its hardly ever mentioned, and is mostly filled with retirees and nanas. |
Old people, citrus fruits, beaches, and dumbasses doing weird stuff such as somehow managing to screw up poking a hole in a ballot.
|
My city is known for a big, round, sun-like building, football, drunken college students, and rednecks. Oh, but don't forget the scenery.
|
depressed economy, high taxes, high unemployment, and a totally unfit state legislature...
|
Oranges, grapefruits, pecans. celery cucumbers.cabbage. carrots, selantro and about every kind of vegetable you can think of......

well the area of virginia where i live is known for being the area that is the inspiration for little house on the prarie but even cooler is that at our family's fishing cabin is located in the same area they filmed Evil Dead.
|
Colorado is known for skiing and school shootings.

I live in West Michigan, I wonder if we are known for anything. Our beaches I suppose. Grand Rapids has plenty of old run down furniture factories.
It was a big deal a few years ago when Tom Hanks was near the area to shoot the end scene to Road To Perdition. The founders of Amway (Van Andel & Devos) have all kinds of things named after them in Grand Rapids. Amway Grand Plaza, Van Andel Arena, DeVos Children's hospital, Devos Hall, Devos Place Convention Center, Van Andel Museum. Van Andel Institute, I think more. Sometimes people complain about everything being named after these guys, but I feel that it is a small price to pay for all the money they donate. Oh, I was born at the same Air Force base by the NE coast of Michigan that one of the Columbine shooters (forgot which one) was born at. We were neighbors when I was like 3 and he was a newborn. I don't think we ever played together, though. :) |
CT is nicknamed "The Nutmeg State" because residents often made extra money in the 1600s and 1700s by travelling to neighboring colonies like NY and MA and selling fake nutmegs.
Now, we're a bunch of rich white old people and casinos on Indian reservations. My home town of Fairfield has the highest per capita rate of teenage alcoholism in the country. We still have one of the highest rates of teen drug use. We used to be one of the country's richest towns (there is a correlation between that and the drug/alcohol use.) As for statistics that I'm proud of, about 5 years ago, we had one of the best public school systems in the country (going downhill lately.) |
Well, not exactly the whole state, but the city I live in.
Kansas City, Missouri is known as Tokyo USA, for creating 3 of the top 100 new inventions in the whole world. That's pretty damn cool if you ask me. |
Lets see Columbus, Ohio.....
Corn Crappy Hockey Team The Buckeyes |
Western Pennsylvania, where we say pop instead of soda.
|
Eastern Pennsylvania, where we say soda instead of pop.
whoopie pies whoopie pies whoopie Pie. |
South Dakota: Mount Rushmore (big pile of granite that has been defaced (yeah, it holds no meaning for me, since i saw it every day for 14 years))
NE South Dakota: The bleak emptiness. |
Dublin, Ireland is known for pubs, friendly people, the "craic", having fun, young people and a great night-life.
I miss it. Mr Mephisto |
West central Illinois, the belly button on the pregnant belly of the state of Illinois.
|
Mormons.
Its our biggest export. |
The falling of the twin towers, being "The Melting Pot", high taxes, and police brutality.
|
My towns' motto is "The heart of East Texas".
We used to be known for the great amount of tomatos grown around here. We're still known for our tomato wars and our basket making. *oh yeah!* In our area we have the Texas State Railroad, a State mental hospital, and a city known for its roses. We also go by The Piney Woods of East Texas. A lot of good fishing spots, too. |

Crabs: Folks here think they invented eating the beasts. I love crabs, but I think the ones from the Delaware Bay are superior. Stuffed Ham: Regular ham isn't good enough. You have to cut it flat, fill it with a bunch of stuffing, roll it up and bake it again. It's practically a cult. Tax and Spend Politicians: Maryland is the original hotbed of evil corrupt government. Think Spiro Agnew. 'nuff said. Tobacco Farms: Virginia has nothing on this scam. They don't actually grow tobacco any more, just collect the federal money not to grow it. Oriental Spas: They are everywhere. |

hey PJ, what about "twelve horse ale" and X-Rox...
|
Minnesota:1880-1910--our forests were cut dow to build the midwest cities, the great-plains cities etc.
1890-1990--the steel companies dug up what was the forest floor end extracted the iron for WWI, WWII, the railroads, the shipping industry, the cars etc. Minneapolis was (for many years) the city that fed the US with floor from its big mills (General Mills and Pillsbury) But mostly we are known for Jesse Ventura |

Two cities.
Vancouver - Known for its amazing scenery, nestled between the mountains and the water. You can go skiing in the morning and sailing in the afternoon, they say. An hour and a half from world class skiing at Whistler as well. Yes, it does rain quite a bit. Those who've been will know Robson and Granville street for shopping and restaurants. Plus we've got the best sunsets I've ever seen. I've travelled the world and there's no place I'd rather live. Edmonton - Gonorrhea capital of Canada, apparently. Biggest mall in the world. Really good university. And that's...about...it. SLM3 |
We're a city of close to 250,000, built nowhere near a river and totally dependent on lakes which run low quite often. I guess we'd be known for great city planning.
|
Rain, cowpies, fences, lakes, awsome women...that's what we're know for round here.
|
Kentucky....
Bourbon, horses, tobacco, child brides, bluegrass (both music and the actual species of grass), college basketball, homemade bombs, the Clooney family. |
Western Colorado
Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables in season. Very good wine. Mesas, arches, and canyons. Oh, if you rember him, Ricky Schroder lives here. I heard Goldie Hawn has a home here as well. |
British Columbia.... we have the awsome west coast attitude that the easterners love so much:cool:, but will never understand.
edit: Goldie and Kurt have a house here too. |
I guess southern california has Hollywood with all of it's movie stars and such. We also have Amoeba, one of the best record stores in the world as voted by many people and magazines and such. We also have the Governator...i bet every non-californian wishes they had Arnold as their governor.
As for my city, Simi Valley, we have been the safest city in the US for a couple years in a row now I do believe. Subsequently(sp?) this is also a very boring town. Although a while back we had the Rodney King beatings as well as the Charles Manson hideout caves. Oh ya, part of the Big Lebowski was filmed here. I guess that would be all of the interesting stuff about this place. |
the country i live in is prob smaller than many of us' states so...

No sales tax other than tourist taxes - hotels, rental cars & prepared food. No state income tax - whew. The smallest amount of oceanfront property for any state touching an ocean (25 mi. or so) The 'Segway' gyroscopically balanced personal transportation machine. Hardly any people of color - it's a pretty white world over here. Lots of tourists all year for the White Mts., the Lake region and the beach. Tons of leaf peepers during the fall. Expensive colleges. More motorcycles per capita than any other state - and we've got lots of months each year where it's too damn cold to ride - go figure. Woefully not much in the way of beautiful women. |
The Azores, peace summits...um..the lost city of Atlantis... unbathed masses of portugeese... that's all I can think of...
