What is your state/area known for?

Washington is known for coffee (Starbucks), Boeing, rain (although it really doesn't rain that much here), Microsoft, seafood, and apples.

How about where you live?

gnort 12-20-2003 04:27 PM

hmm Massachusetts is known for Puritans, The witch trials, chowdah, the kennedys, Alot of revolutionary war hullabaloo, a baseball team that seems like it will never break its curse, and amongsty other things a democratic state run by a republican governor (wtf?!?!).

My area (western mass) is known for wonderful senery in the fall time of year, a whole lotta snow, and my town has a tremendous population of Portogues folk. I think they are trying to assimilate me

Phaenx 12-20-2003 04:36 PM

Drunken college students.

bundy 12-20-2003 04:56 PM

my state: well, New South Wales is known for, um, well, great beaches that line the coast, the Blue Mountains, the Hunter Valley, Byron Bay (pretty and green) and Sydney.

my city: Sydney is known for the 2000 Olympics, its fireworks, its friendly people, its stunning harbour, its big bridge, its glam opera house, its pub crawling, its beautiful women, manly and bondi beaches (although its common knowledge to locals that they are not the best beaches) and its annual bushfires.

my neighbourhood: well, my area is probably known for not being known, if that makes any sense. its hardly ever mentioned, and is mostly filled with retirees and nanas.

irseg 12-20-2003 05:00 PM

Old people, citrus fruits, beaches, and dumbasses doing weird stuff such as somehow managing to screw up poking a hole in a ballot.

glytch 12-20-2003 05:17 PM

My city is known for a big, round, sun-like building, football, drunken college students, and rednecks. Oh, but don't forget the scenery.

Amish. Lots of horse and buggy driving, making grooves in the highway with their metal wheels, big beard wearin', bonnet donning, inbred, no tax-paying, horse beating, electricity shunning, telephone in the barn using...Amish.

Oh,stop booing.
They're not quaint when you live around them.

Colorado is known for skiing and school shootings.

anleja 12-20-2003 06:50 PM

I live in West Michigan, I wonder if we are known for anything. Our beaches I suppose. Grand Rapids has plenty of old run down furniture factories.

It was a big deal a few years ago when Tom Hanks was near the area to shoot the end scene to Road To Perdition.

The founders of Amway (Van Andel & Devos) have all kinds of things named after them in Grand Rapids. Amway Grand Plaza, Van Andel Arena, DeVos Children's hospital, Devos Hall, Devos Place Convention Center, Van Andel Museum. Van Andel Institute, I think more. Sometimes people complain about everything being named after these guys, but I feel that it is a small price to pay for all the money they donate.

Oh, I was born at the same Air Force base by the NE coast of Michigan that one of the Columbine shooters (forgot which one) was born at. We were neighbors when I was like 3 and he was a newborn. I don't think we ever played together, though. :)

CT is nicknamed "The Nutmeg State" because residents often made extra money in the 1600s and 1700s by travelling to neighboring colonies like NY and MA and selling fake nutmegs.

Now, we're a bunch of rich white old people and casinos on Indian reservations.

My home town of Fairfield has the highest per capita rate of teenage alcoholism in the country. We still have one of the highest rates of teen drug use. We used to be one of the country's richest towns (there is a correlation between that and the drug/alcohol use.)

As for statistics that I'm proud of, about 5 years ago, we had one of the best public school systems in the country (going downhill lately.)

SVT01Cobra 12-20-2003 08:12 PM

Well, not exactly the whole state, but the city I live in.
Kansas City, Missouri is known as Tokyo USA, for creating 3 of the top 100 new inventions in the whole world.

That's pretty damn cool if you ask me.

NE South Dakota: The bleak emptiness.

Mephisto2 12-20-2003 10:23 PM

Dublin, Ireland is known for pubs, friendly people, the "craic", having fun, young people and a great night-life.

I miss it.

My towns' motto is "The heart of East Texas".
We used to be known for the great amount of tomatos grown around here.
We're still known for our tomato wars and our basket making. *oh yeah!*
In our area we have the Texas State Railroad, a State mental hospital, and a city known for its roses.
We also go by The Piney Woods of East Texas.
A lot of good fishing spots, too.

I'm in the other hotbed of Amish inactivity, southern Maryland. Other things particular to this area:

Crabs: Folks here think they invented eating the beasts. I love crabs, but I think the ones from the Delaware Bay are superior.

Stuffed Ham: Regular ham isn't good enough. You have to cut it flat, fill it with a bunch of stuffing, roll it up and bake it again. It's practically a cult.

Tax and Spend Politicians: Maryland is the original hotbed of evil corrupt government. Think Spiro Agnew. 'nuff said.

Tobacco Farms: Virginia has nothing on this scam. They don't actually grow tobacco any more, just collect the federal money not to grow it.

Oriental Spas: They are everywhere.

Minnesota:1880-1910--our forests were cut dow to build the midwest cities, the great-plains cities etc.
1890-1990--the steel companies dug up what was the forest floor end extracted the iron for WWI, WWII, the railroads, the shipping industry, the cars etc.
Minneapolis was (for many years) the city that fed the US with floor from its big mills (General Mills and Pillsbury)
But mostly we are known for Jesse Ventura
