So I'm going to college in the spring...HELP

What should I expect? What kind of supplies should I get? Is the first class meeting the first Mon, Tue, or whatever after Jan 12th or what? Help me out here.

umm obvious stuff....like normal nursery school stuff...pens pencils etc...but also things for the specialisation of your course i.e. lab coat etc
a comp may also be helpful but just take yourself along and try be awake, it kinda helps

expect?
expect fun and the greatest years of your life (cliche yes....but soo true..i'm finishing soon and i don't want to leave :( )

Are you staying in a dorm? As for the start date, that varies from school to school. Check their calendar.

Check the website for the school.. They'll have a calender with whatever dates are important (first day, last day, vacations, etc.)

Also, if you live on campus, they should have a page that will give you a list of stuff you can't bring into the dorms, and possibly a list of "suggested" items.

Just take what you would think you would need, like bed sheets/blankets/pillows, toiletries, school supplies, etc.

Talk to your roommate(s) about what they are bringing, and decide if someone is gonna bring a TV, small fridge, microwave, etc.

Finally, just remember that you are there to learn, as well as to enjoy yourself as much as possible. Never forget either fact and you will love it there.

Expect a whole bunch of folks to make pretty unfortunate first impressions by demonstrating that they don't know when to say when....by getting so drunk that they make asses out of themselves. Drink (if you want to), but do not go so overboard that for the next four years you won't be able to shake the "he's the guy that our first week of school got naked, passed out in the girl's bathroom, and had to get his stomach pumped."

You've got four years to do everything, but precious few opportunities to make first impressions. Ease into it....

I forgot to mention I'm 31, won't be staying in the dorm.

sbscout 12-20-2003 01:11 PM

relax and take it all in...

have a few pieces of paper and something to write with... that should be enough to get you started.

Naw---get a close hair cut, new sharp cloths and tell everyone your 21--not 31---go for it ---experience counts...

Went back to college at 47, not living in the dorm. You should have a course schedule, either printout or online. If the semester starts on a Monday, and you have a Monday class, your class meets on the first day. If you really want to make sure, call the department office.

As for materials: pens, notebooks or three-ring binders for note-taking, and that's really about it. If more is required, they'll tell you on day 1 and the student store should (doesn't always, but should) have anything else you need.

Oh yeah, if you need a parking permit at that school, find out about it. The school website should have all the details.

31 and going back to college. Take a large box of condoms. You are bound to get some action. Young college girls go for the older students, figure you have money to spend on them.

depending on what your major is you will have a lot more work then you expected. I am pulling at least 19 credits a semester( which is more like 22 or 23 credit hours) and working 15-25 hours a week and it takes a lot of energy to keep doing it all at a constant level

I hope so. I don't think my wife would be too thrilled, but I like to flirt with pretty young girls.

My plan right now is to only go 1/2 time, hopefully I will be able to handle it on top of everything else I already do. The studying part shouldn't be too bad, but I don't like to write long papers, so hopefully I can avoid those professors that like them.

do your work as soon as you can after it's assigned....it feels terrible to get into one of those situations where you can never catch up
other than that, enjoy the experience

Yep, I was going to suggest to try reading your coursework before the term starts. Especially now that you've told us you are an older student--I'm assuming you have career obligations.

If you do your reading before class and come prepared, you can demonstrate that to your professors and they'll reward you for it. Good luck and have fun!

santafe5000 12-22-2003 07:34 PM

Hope you know that was a joke. Didn't mean to get you in trouble with the wife.
I went to college after the service and was older than most of my classmates. They seem to look to me for the real life uses for the thing's they were learning, you know the complaint, Will I Really Need This In Real LIfe.
Any way, good luck and have patience.
