In Laws

Love 'em or Hate 'em or just ignore them.... there are a good number of us who have them. Some have more than others due to multiple marriages over years.

How do you feel about your inlaws? How does your SO feel about your inlaws?

I treat them like I would anyone else. If they are assholes, then there's no reason for me to spend time with them. If they are pleasant, then I will tend to want to be around them.

Wife she's intimidated by my parents. She thinks that they don't like her, which is far from the case. They just don't show it the way she thinks that they should.

My in-laws are both dead now but while they were alive they were a couple of the nicest people I've ever met. Maybe I was extremely lucky and while we disagreed at times it never really got to a serious disagreement. I miss them. Both of my parents died before I met my wife so she never met either of them.

Well....I don't have in-laws per se but going out with the same person for 3.5 years...it's close enough.

BUT...everytime I say anything about onodrim's parents I get in trouble

She likes my parents a lot though.

It all boils down to the fact that our parents are in many ways complete opposites They get along with eachother though.

To quote my father, I don't have in-laws. I have outlaws.

Actually, the in-law thing really comes down to how they are as people. Both my parents and my wife's parent are deceased. Of her two brothers and sister. I like her sister and one brother. The older brother is an asshole, so we don't deal with him. My wife refers to him as her Bozo Brother, or just plain Bozo.

The rest of my wife's family live clear across the country. The few times we've met, they seem like really nice people.

My wife's parents mostly complain about their lives whenever I talk to them, but they don't bother me. My wife's brother always tries to convert us to his religion. He knows that we are not religious, but he continues to sends us all sorts of wacky religious cards. He gives a ton of money to his church, but always borrows money from his parents (my in-laws).

My FIL and MIL are great - we get along really well as we're all pretty laid back but driven at the same time. When we visit she and her mother go out and do stuff and I go out with her father and we golf together. Siblings are pretty decent and a couple of fun neices. All in all, I got lucky.

My in-laws live right across the street. They're nice people but very different from my family. FIL is a truck driver and plays accordian in a polka band, tried to get me to play drums in it.

My wife likes my mom, and is sort of guarded about my dad and stepmom. My mom told her all about my parents' divorce and the fact that stepmom is the woman he was cheating with before they were divorced etc. Makes things interesting.

My in laws are great. They treat me like family, usually take my side when there is an argument between my wife and I and spend a lot of quality time with my kids. I guess I just got lucky...

I absolutely love my in-laws. They are two of the nicest people I know. It helps that I've known them for more than half of my life and that I put their daughter on a pedestal-because she deserves to be there.

juan's family is interesting. They're all blindingly intelligent, and really friendly. his dad's got a tendency to pontificate, but all in all they're a good bunch, and i enjoy spending time with them.

Now, my family on the other hand.. well...dad's anti-social, mom's nuts, and sis's 15 going on 16. that's a recipe for disaster no matter WHO'S meeting them.

I don't have inlaws.

But if I did I would hope that I got along with them. But if my past tells me anything it's that most people hate me.

onodrim gave me permission so I'll keep it short

Her mom's pretty much crazy and her dad, while somewhat more reasonable, still has a pretty bad temper and has a tendency towards being rediculous as well. Must be the uber-fundamentalist in them

Side-effect of that though is that, when they're not being crazy or unreasonable, they're pleasant (albeit pretty boring) people. Still, if I went into some of the asinine things that have come out of her mom's mouth...I'd get angry just typing them.

My girlfriend's mum is OK... to me anyway, she's always going on at my girlfriend for not studying enough when a) she dropped out way before the end of highschool (unlike my girlfriend) so she has no fucken idea anyway, b) she studies hardout, and she's not allowed to do anything during the week and her time on the weekend is limited. Mel likes my parents though, my mum's a lot friendly and less intimidating than hers. She's only met my dad once but she likes him, same here, although I've met her dad a few times.... damn divorces making things complicated!

My outlaws are great. I'm in NY and they live in OZ so I don't get to see them very often. Too bad. Nothing like hanging with my father-in-law, drinking piss, and watching the cricket.

Well my in-laws live just down the street and we get along great. They've even joked sometimes that they like me better than their daughter (my wife).
Now my wife loves my father gets along w/ him great. My mother on the other hand...that's a different story, my wife really hasn't seen a jewish mother in action. The one good thing about it, is that my mother lives in Wisconsin and we live in Tennessee, I think we measured it out to 666 miles (pretty scary) one of the times we drove up, something my wife loves to constantly bring up...

My MIL is great. Unfortuately I didn't meet my FIL until he'd already entered the parinoid stage of dimensia. He didn't exactly trust me. My BIL lives a few block away and we get along OK. He's just a little too much into sports for me.

I've heard it stated that the only difference between in-laws and outlaws is that outlaws are wanted. But it seems to me that most of *my* ex in-laws *were* outlaws.

My MIL is trying to like me, but just can't accept that I stay home with the kids, while my wife works. When we got pregnant, and decided to look for a bigger house, she couldn't understand why we wouldn't just have my wife's nine year old share her room with the baby. This from someone who, when moving to Nashville to go back to school for three years, bought a new construction twice the square footage, or more, of what we now have, and it's just her, her dog, and her cat.

After the boyo was born, she came up to see him by way of flying to St. Louis, intruding upon my FIL(whom she'd left a few years ago)for about a week, and driving up with him. She actually told my stepdaughter that she would come visit again when we have another baby. Yeah, that six hour drive to see yer grandkids just ain't worth it; don't let the door hit you inna ass on the way out, lady.

By no means am I anything but pleasant and polite the couple times I've seen her, and when she calls, but I've managed to survive for 38 years, now, without her guidance, so I pretty much shrug her off.

My FIL, on the other hand, is just so easy to hang out with. Moreso, probably, since he's been single again, and living his life as he sees fit. He's just marking time until he can retire onto his boat, and be rid of everything else. As long as we're happy, he's happy.

My wife really likes my mom, because she's totally opposite my MIL. She raised me and my brother, and is leaving it up to us to raise our own kids, as we and our spouses, see fit. No stress whatsoever when the missus and my mom are around each other. Actually, they tend to gang up on me....

Both of my in-laws are dead, but my mother-in-law was one of the best friends I've ever had.

My wife thinks my folks are hicks, because...well...because they are.
