new breakthroughs in natural resources...

what are your thoughts on breakthrough like this one? do you think this is as exciting a prospect as i do?

Wow! It sounds too good to be true, but I guess its from a credible source (discover? like the channel?). Will this make gas prices go down before summer so I can go on my road trip with less money?
Poor turkeys, now they've got more than one day of the year to worry about. Oh, I just read something else in that article, about the global warming thing. They say it would increase global warming, but it also produces a very good fertilizer, which would encourage more plants to grow, and take care of some of that extra CO2. Therefore it balances out.... Right?

I am quite pleased that the great minds are beginning to think of reasonable alternatives to fossil fuels. However, I really wish for the day where petroleum products are used only as lubricants, and combustion of fuel for energy lies only in history books.

It would be awsome... If it really happens

Isn't there a car company that is working on a car that runs on hydrogen, and the only exhaust is water?
Do any of y'all know if this car uses oil? If it's supposed to be environmentally friendly, how does it do it while using oil? I hope we do get this to work, our planet is being depleted, but fast.

There IS a car that run on hydrogen that exhausts water. However I rember hearing that the process of getting hydrogen causes as much pollution as normal cars do.

actually a friend of mine is doing a paper about the hydrogen cars. From what i heard, I believe the pollution is a lot less now. The thing is, when it does come out, it'll be extremely expensive. It'll be a while before those cars are cheap. One of the problems with them, is that it takes twice the amount of liquid that gas cars require for the same difference. Its cleaner, but more is needed.
As for the article? Thats some amazing stuff! Lately, I've heard how we can turn things into diamond, and now we can turn things into just about everything else. Thats awesome... The potential here is very great and will help out the economy. On a side note.. Maybe this will alert the world that Iraq wasn't for the oil.. as our turkies provide us with the oil and on the Comical Note... Can I get one of those things in Starcraft?

That is too cool.
It's just amazing what a little engineering and whole lot of know how can do in today's world. I caught the end of a program on Discovery where they were making computer parts out of chicken feathers?!?

Sounds great especially since I believe we only have like 30-45 years left of oil and 60 of natural gas or so. To think in my lifetime that will happen and what the consequences of it will be.
Hopefully it will turn out the way they predict. I like the part about humans though. Reminded me of Soylent Green. It's People! |

Should this turn out to be true, it sounds great. But I'm not holding my breath for now.
I've written a few papers on the hydrogen economy, fuel cell power, and distributed power grids. Maybe I'll start some threads by posting them...or maybe not.

It would be nice if this happens. I fear though, that the stereotypical "oil men" are not so much interested in oil itself being freely available to all, but rather in the total control of whatever oil resources DO exist and the political and financial power that comes from that control.
The method discussed here is kinda apt considering the ancient origins of all *fossil* fuels. |

'Scuse me for not grasping the whole concept.
How much energy is expended into making x amount of energy? If we could develop a more efficient way of using our natural resources, we would be a lot further to solving our natural resource problem. I expect burnination for this, but how 'bout we use what we got more efficiently. (Although in some ways this article does) I keep getting told efficiency=profitability, but see less examples of it.

Mad_Gecko: the machine appears to be nearly 100% efficient.
"If a 175-pound man fell into one end, he would come out the other end as 38 pounds of oil, 7 pounds of gas, and 7 pounds of minerals, as well as 123 pounds of sterilized water." If the gas is useable for something, and the water is drinkable, then this machine is truely a wonder. |

Interesting article, phred.
I would think that something like this would be wonderful, if it can really be done efficiently, cheaply, and in a quantity to meet the demands we put on it. Only time will tell.

The problem; theres only enough garbage to produce half the oil we use up. So we're still getting half of it from the ground. At least by the calculations we made
