What Instrument(s) do you Play? What do you WISH you could Play?

Another resurrected thread,

Anyway, I play decent guitar, although I haven't played enough in recent years.

My baby is my Martin D28. I play folk, classic rock and religious stuff.

I have a harp (midsize) that I am intending lessons on, maybe after this term ends. I've messed around with recorders, but my music reading isn't that great.

I REALLY want to learn Piano, but not until I can buy a full size keyboard.

Spanky Johnson 04-19-2003 09:04 AM

I would really like to play guitar, but I don't think I am cut out for it. My hands are pretty small for a guy, and my fingers are short, which I think is a disadvantage. I bought a guitar and tried to learn to play for quite some time (just self-taught, I never took any lessons). I can play open chords, but can't get barre chords down at all, and can't move between most open chords quickly enough.

forseti-6 04-19-2003 09:05 AM

I too play guitar. I too have a Martin D-28! My baby is a '65 Martin D-21 though. Haha. What year is yours? Mine is a 2000 model. I really love playing mandolin and piano also, but I've always wanted to learn to play some fretless instruments. The cello has always been an instruments that has intrigued me.

Omar12 04-19-2003 09:06 AM

I play the french horn and guitar
I wanna buy a bass, I have played it before and I like it more than the guitar.

Spanky,

Don't think you can't play good because you have small hands. I've got the smallest hands out of all my friends that play, and I can play a heck of a lot better than them. It's all practicing and stretching though. Albeit I used to practice about 4 hours a day for a few years, your hands def. shouldn't dictate how good you can be.

Junchbailey 04-19-2003 09:07 AM

I play guitar, bass, and keyboard. I also have a drum macine but I don't think that counts as playing. I have a Fender DG-10 acoustic, a Washburn XB-100 bass, and my electric is a cheap no name.

spectre 04-19-2003 09:08 AM

I play the guitar and can keep up with most songs, I just wish I was better at it.

alpha phi 04-19-2003 09:08 AM

I play the guitar
I've always wanted to play drums, but I can't keep a rhythm to save my life

yournamehere 04-19-2003 09:09 AM

First of all - welcome back <b>Lebell</b>

I also used to play guitar - alas, some severe financial setbaccks a long time ago forced me to sell my beloved Ovation Dreadnaught - haven't played since.

frenik 04-19-2003 09:12 AM

I play guitar like shit, but it doesn't matter because I really only play to improve my mood. I played trumpet in the 5th grade until my family moved and the school we went to didn't have the music program my old school had, and I had gotten pretty good in that half a year. Don't remember anything now, though. When I was 5 I played piano, and I can still play the song I played for the recital, even though I can barely find middle c or whatever. Very strange the way our brains work.

I want to get a drum set. I don't really wish I could play the drums, I just want to bang around on them for a while, it would be fun.

Well, that's encouraging. I think I'm going to get out my guitar and give it another try. If anyone knows any good guitar tutorial sites, please post them.

forseti-6 04-19-2003 09:17 AM

Spanky,

try this site: http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/f/...8/glw/lessons/

My one friend used it, and he said it was pretty helpful. Also the best advice I can give you for getting better (other than practicing) is to play with people who are better than you. It DOES rub off. Just don't be modest, as you can only learn when you're making mistakes.

Dragonlich 04-19-2003 09:20 AM

I used to play the trumpet when I was young, and was quite good at it. Then I got bored. I can probably still play the thing.

I wish I could play "hide the sausage" with a girl. :)

Fly 04-19-2003 09:20 AM

damn.......i put this same topic in the tilted music this morn.oh well..:D

how's it goin' Lebell?

drums,bass and guitars for me.

like to learn the piano too,for some reason.:D

rock_bottom 04-19-2003 09:23 AM

My family is musically inclined... so they kind of got me into it as a kid.
Piano: Took 5 years of irregular lessons, but mostly taught myself to play later on. I just know "standards", patriotic and Christmas songs, it comes in handy every once in a while.
Cello: Was in Orchestra 7 years. It was mostly a social thing, if we hadn't been having so much fun I would have dropped out. I liked to play, but not being particularly talented, it took a lot of practice to keep up with everyone.
I wish I was good with Fruity Loops or other equipment... it would be fun to make some trance and hardcore music.

b1m2x3 04-19-2003 09:28 AM

is a computer an instrument? :D

played violin for 6 years
guitar for 1
flute for 1 (wanted to play piccolo)
and ukelele

Lebell 04-19-2003 09:42 AM

Hee,

Hi YourNameHere, Flyman (sorry about the repost bro).

Forseti-6, mine is a 70's vintage, bought for 660$ used. It was a super find, one of my prized possessions. I have another guitar that I use outside and I sold my Epiphone 12 string.

Someday I want to pick up a Taylor 12 string and a Gibson Natural Flame top hollow body.

Chilly McFreeze 04-19-2003 10:07 AM

I play guitar, I like Fenders personally. I have a strat and one of those Supersonics they made about 5 years ago (the body is like an upside down Jaguar, and it comes in this cool metallic blue sparkle finish). I was watching the Aerosmith making of Pump video the other day, and I'd love to be able to play the drums like Kramer!

Somenosuke 04-19-2003 10:19 AM

I played guitar a little bit when I was in high school, but then I stopped practicing. So I kind of stink at it now. :P Tried piano, same as guitar. I'd -really- love to learn harp, recorder, and maybe take up violin again. (Tried that in 3rd grade, had to quit, though.) I'm primarily a vocalist. :)

oane 04-19-2003 10:25 AM

The only "Instrument" I can play is....you know.....

Having said that, I wish I could play saxphone. Else piano.

World's King 04-19-2003 10:28 AM

I got the 2 Turntables and a Microphone.

Foo.

MyFakeAccount 04-19-2003 10:28 AM

I play the trombone, and I would love to play the Piano, but that requires something I don’t have, talent.

The_Dude 04-19-2003 11:12 AM

i play a lil guitar

and the skin flute (joking)

SecretMethod70 04-19-2003 12:14 PM

I play saxophone (pretty much any type as they're all very similar, but mainly alto), bassoon, and ... vocal chords ;) :p

I gave up saxophone and bassoon to pursue a career in singing, so that's what I'm doing now. I'm required to learn some piano so I can sort of play that and am supposedly going to get better.

And I wish I could play guitar, drums, cello, whatever - anything really, they're all cool :D

kgb 04-19-2003 12:19 PM

I played the trombone, tuba and baritone years ago. Right now I can still play the piano a bit. What I really want to learn to play is the acordion. I want to be the polka king of the Midwest.

onodrim 04-19-2003 12:30 PM

I play piano, trumpet, and sing. Since I'm studying voice right now, that takes over all the rest. :) I've always wanted to learn to play any strnged instrument from the viola to the Cello to the guitar. Maybe one day if I ahve extra time (riiiiiiiiight) or extra money (this is so not looking good ;)) I'll get a chance to learn. :)

valkan 04-19-2003 12:36 PM

I really wanted to learn how to play guitar... untill all my friends in my grade came back from summer one year, all had gotten guitars, started skateboarding, and wore those punk spiked belts,..... trendwhores lol

genka 04-19-2003 12:42 PM

I play trumpet really badly. Like real bad.

Janie 04-19-2003 12:54 PM

I play the piano - have been playing four years now, but I wish I was lots better.
I wouldn't mind learning bass guitar, upright bass and/or cello, flute, clarinet (I tried once and couldn't even make a sound. it's been bugging me ever since).
Most of all, I want to learn to sing.

GakFace 04-19-2003 12:55 PM

I learned how to play the Cello. I'm not the greatest there ever was but it brought me more than I had ever imagined. First it taught me how to read music. Always a useful skill. Secondly, Cello is usually a background intrument. From playing it, I have gained a respect for the background music. From it I tend to listen to just the music.. its rare for me to hear everything a band says, as i'm too intune with the music. The third is simply that i also like to listen to classical music along side with Godsmack, Manson, Reel Big Fish... everyone :)

bigpappasmurf 04-19-2003 01:09 PM

i play bass, but i'd love to play cello or piano or something like that. i'm pretty good at bass, i have 2 right now, a fretless and a 5 string ESP

semperwill 04-19-2003 01:12 PM

I play the guitar but have always wanted to learn the piano

G_Whiz 04-19-2003 01:21 PM

I used to play the trumpet and the piano. Haven't played anything in years.

I'd love to learn the guitar and bango.

Crimson 04-19-2003 01:22 PM

I play bass guitar

Well

I own a bass guitar - I wish I could play it

I fell in love with the intro for Little Green Bag - years and years ago

And have been playing it ever since - And nothing else - I never seem to have the time for it

guthmund 04-19-2003 01:27 PM

I play a pretty mean guitar and a decent bass.

I used to ham it up on my trumpet and french horn through highschool, but the girls just didn't dig the my Armstrong, so I put it away.

I would love to play the Cello. I love the sound it makes, round and fat like a plump pear. It seems like a background instrument, but it also has it's solo chops, which adds to the interest

boatin 04-19-2003 01:31 PM

I have a HUGE desire to play the harmonica. I watch Springsteen and Dylan, and wish I could do it. Don't really know how to start. Any thoughts?

Plummie 04-19-2003 01:41 PM

Buy one and start messing around! :) It's not too terribly difficult. You can do it!

The piano is my baby. Been playing for 13 years. :)

Foozboote 04-19-2003 01:45 PM

HELLO Lebell, nice to see you around again :)

Grondar 04-19-2003 02:28 PM

I played violin and then viola when I was younger. Yea, I know, both very "cool and hip" instruments. :)

I didn't really enjoy going to lessons and practicing, but my parents made me stick with it, and I guess it was a good experience now that I am done with it.

I played in a local orchestra and don't consider myself to be much better than average, but the change over to viola did allow me to experience more, as the competetion wasn't as great. There aren't as many violists as violinists around here.

I am in college now, and not playing any instruments. I did take one or two piano lessons as a kid, but they didn't amount to much.

Playing a musical instrument is a fun and very rewarding experience, I just don't think I was "into" it enough to do well and sustain interest past high school.

Fob_Magi 04-19-2003 02:35 PM

I dont play anything.. but I'd kill to play the guintar.. I fuck around on my friends sometimes, but I just cant carry a tune, beat, melody anything.. and I think I'm tone deaf..
