My response to this stupid commercial is, Buy electric shaver, the blades last more than a year, and BELIEVE ME when I say, a year worth of razors and cream are much more expensive than a one time investment in a $40-100 razor. Heck, I got mine on clearance for $30 at Best Buy, had it two years, and it still cuts my hair smooth as hell!

MAD magazine postulated a Track-17 razor back in the 1970s. I could find it if anyone's interested.

A cosmetics company launched a new mascara brand and it was given "40% thicker lashes" guarantee. They were asked what that means. Do they actually measure individual hair or how they get the percentage? "We weight 'em." "So you are saying this mascara gives 40% heavier lashes? Why don't you say so in the ad?" Guess it wouldn't sound so flattering..

Norelco Challenges Remington's False Advertising

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 11, 2003--Norelco Consumer Products Company, a division of Philips Electronics North America Corporation, has filed a complaint against Remington Products, LLC, maker of the Remington "Titanium" Razor, challenging Remington's claims concerning the key feature of its new "Titanium" product.

Norelco's complaint challenges a new advertisement for the Remington "Titanium" Microscreen Ultra product, which misleads consumers into believing that it has some "titanium" metal that contributes to the shaving process, providing a unique and superior shave.

"Remington's new advertisement misleads consumers into believing that the shaving components of the Microscreen Ultra are titanium," stated Robert Baird, president of Norelco. "Remington's misleading assault on consumers, especially during this holiday season, is indefensible and cannot be allowed to continue."

I picked up on this right away too. There's alot more going into a sharp edge than just material. How sharp you can make something is material dependent though. As a general rule of thumb with many exceptions the more brittle an edge is the sharper you can make it.

Imagine trying to make a knife out of a marshmellow vs a piece of glass. Even different steels can be sharpened different amounts. The more carbon in a steel the sharper you can make it. Whether Titanium and be made sharp I have no idea. It would make a really bad knife because it is so hard you wouldn't be able to sharpen it with most stones.

I kind of oscilate back and forth between an electric and a blade. Sometimes an electric razor will give me horrible razor burn and/or a really poor shave even with fresh blades/screens in the razor.

And besides all that, turns out that it isn't titanium steel but a derivative of titanium and they only use it on the pop up tripper. So not only do they lie when they say its sharper they lie when they say they use it.

If I remember correctly from materials class, some metals can be sharpened to a finer point than others because of the "crystaline" structures inherent in the metals.... I'd have to look it up, but I think some metals can actually be "thinner" than others, before they break down...... Pullin this straight out of the old wazoo, until I can check on it though....

No, you're not an outsider. I think anyone that actually listens to what the advertisers are saying about almost any product gets annoyed at the lies. I tend to ignore commercials completely, but then I don't watch much television anymore. (I spend too much time here at the TFP!) It helps prevent me from being constantly pissed off at advertiser's stupidity. Sometimes I see an add and think that studpidity of that level should be a crime punishible by death.

Sorry, I just wonder sometimes... companies say some stupid things in their commercials that perhaps the avg person doesn't pick up on. I laugh when I see computer software commercials on TV because they are for shitty "professional grade" applications that probably took a drunken application developer one afternoon to produce.

So, we know that companies have to support all claims about their product that they make in commercials, but you can get away with so much. "Number 1 car in America" "$40 value for only $15"

Moral of the story is... don't trust anything that a commercial says.
THANKYOU! i just saw this post now, but i've been ranting about the commercial ever since i saw it the first time. it's fairly infamous amongst my friends as the commercial that sends me into a frenzy.

Ya, I was wondering about that ad too. I thought that Titanium was just strong and light, I never figured it to be sharp. When I think sharp, I think ceramic, glass, and diamond.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not - but sharpness is actually a function of bond-orientation and type.

here's the latest BREAKTHROUGH in the RAZOR WARS:

Gillette's new M3 Power Razor - with battery-powered VIBRATIONS!

..........................

Gillette loses court fight with Schick
By Neil Buckley in New York
Published: January 15 2004 19:12 | Last Updated: January 16 2004 0:34

The war of the razors heated up on Thursday as Gillette unveiled a high-tech powered version of its triple-blade Mach3 razor and a judge rejected its attempt to block rival Schick from selling its four-bladed Quattro product.

Gillette still has about 70 per cent of the razor market, but faces growing competition from a revitalised Schick-Wilkinson Sword, which launched Quattro last September.

Gillette sued Schick for allegedly infringing its patents on Mach3 - which has had sales of $9bn since its launch in 1999.

However a Massachusetts judge on Thursday night denied Gillette's application for an interim injunction against Quattro, saying that its case had no reasonable likelihood of success.

Schick said it was pleased with the decision and that it remained "highly confident" of its legal position.

Gillette said it had been vigorous in defending its intellectual property and did "not intend to abandon these claims based on this interim ruling".

The legal news came hours after Gillette unveiled a battery-powered, "pulsating" version of the Mach3.

The M3 Power includes a specially designed motor that makes the handle pulsate gently.

Gillette says this lifts hairs away from the skin, captures "wayward" hairs that conventional razors miss, and tautens the skin in front of the blades - leading, the company claims, to a better shave.

But consumers will have to pay up for what Gillette says is not just a new razor but a "new shaving experience".

The handles, including two blade cartridges and a Duracell battery, will cost about $14.99 when they are launched in North America in May - $6 more than the Mach3 Turbo, Gillette's current flagship.

A four-pack of blade cartridges will cost $10.99, 15 per cent more than for the Mach3 Turbo.

Gillette said it had been developing the M3 Power for some time and the launch timing was not influenced by the new competitive environment.

The M3 Power, developed at Gillette's laboratory in Reading in the UK , is protected by no fewer than 62 patents.

Actually Titanium is softer, weaker and less dense than steel. It also has the tendency to gall much like aluminium. Gall basically means it smudges and peels for lack of a better description when rubbed. This is why bearing and bearing races cannot be made from titanium. However Titanium Dioxide is a popular metal treatment that is often applied to steel drillbits and other tools to decrease wear. BTW this is the same active ingredient that is used in sunscreen. The the average lay person, titanium is protrayed as some super metal, which it is not. It has its advantages and its disadvantages, but solid titanium shaving blades are not one of them.
