Poundin' the Pavement blues...

...well, I've survived off of the governments teet for 1 month now, and I find it rather disgusting, so I have started once again to look for a job (this is 3 jobs that have gone under in the last 3 years). It really sucks finding a job you love, only to have the company go belly up. I really really hope the economy gets better, because everyone I've talked to isn't too secure in their own job. Well, just wanted to get that off my chest.

you could volunteer your time now. It will give you soemthing to do and allow you to network. It will also get you out of the house.

Good luck with the job search.

I'll be starting myself come January. I've outgrown this job, its time for some new challenges.

Good luck with the job search. The economy is making a strong recovery but the jobs are still not opening up as quickly as the strong growth would dictate. They will come in 2004. In the meantime, make the most of your idle time. School, family, etc are great excuses NOT to work. Good luck!

I feel your pain sir. The day before Thanksgiving I visited a good 15 places up around the Polaris convention center here in town, about 9 places weren't even hiring and I got 1 interview out of the whole deal (who said they had 100 applicants, they haven't called back yet).

Unemployment is a pain in the ass, but at least medic-aid rocks.

I hope you all the best. I have been unemployed for two months now, and not for lack of trying. With the economy the way it is -- plus the added bonus of this being the holiday season, NO ONE - and I mean no one - is hiring.

BUT maybe your corner of the world is better off than here. Happy hunting!

I have quite a bit of experience in the tech field, retail and general office duties. I was applying at places like home depot, blockbuster, old navy, temp joints, etc. All but Old Navy blew me off.

Don't get fired, finding work is tough right now.

Unemployment sucks. I've been there. I'd have to say that broadening the search would be a good way to start. Have any of you tried hospitals? They are almost always hiring. Nursing can be especially lucrative. Once you get trained and a little experience youcan get a job almost anywhere in the country. My sister is a nurse and she can write her own ticket. Makes plenty of overtime, works 3 or 4 days a week (extended hour shifts of 10 or 12 hours) and has more "comp" days than she will ever use. Most of the time she doesn't need to actually take her vacation, she just schedules her 3 day weeks so that they are right before and right after her vacation.

I was having a hard time finding a job too. Im in the financial services industry and even licenced brokers with 5 - 10 year experience were out of work. I ended up signing on with a temp agency to get through the downtime. Fortunately the agency I work through contracts with the Federal government so most of my time is spent on the computer doing my own research.

Best of luck to everyone.

I keep hearing about how things are improving, but all I see is more people looking for work, more ads for auctions / plant liquidations, and more companies leaving the country.

I guess things are only better if you are a Halliburton CEO or some such thing.

As to what I do, my most recent job was in furniture manufactoring, but I have experience in retail, office, and food prep. And now my phone is cut off, so I can't get any call backs...its looking like ye olde cardboard box for M0nty soon.

I just want to say good luck with everyone's job hunting. I'm looking myself, but luckily I'm just unhappy with the job I have. I just had to let 3 people go at the beginning of November and I know all 3 of them are still looking for something too. I think this would be an opportune time to begin to rant about the current president and his administration, but I'll save that for another thread.

Good luck with the job hunt. I think volunteering, temp work and retraining are all good ideas. Especially if you are not sure where you want to go next. It can really broaden your horizons and set you up with networking too.
