So would you consider this woman fat ?

This is Anastasiya Volochkova formerly of the Bolshoi Ballet.
She was fired recently for being too fat.
She weighs 48KG and the Male Dancers were saying that she was too heavy to lift.

Men like this guy , trained for years as a dancer & super fit.

Okay I know that dancing ballet and tossing 48KG around is not the easiest thing in the world and its far from the same as me Salsaing with my girl who weighs ***SMACK*** , but after years of training and a suberb fitness regime ?

I used to lead a TaeKwonDo and because of a flood we shared a hall with some ballet dancers, not only were they doing the exactly the same exercises that we were , I pretty sure that they would have given my guys quite the challenge in a straight fitness , strength contest

So she sued and won £10K .

Good for her.

With all that cash maybe she might get a plane ticket to a place where real men would very gladly like to toss her around...like ooohhhhh ... my house.
Oh Yes

In the world of ballet she is fat. In the real world she is also fat. But to the people that really care... she's way too skinny.

Come on... 48 Kg too heavy? I'm almost twice that and I'm concidered pretty damned skinny.
I say good for her, getting that 10K, off course her ballerina career is over, but at least now she can have all the brownies she wants...

She has been reinstated.

She is very tall for a ballerina, but the article leans towards her larger than typical ego as her biggest problem. I think it will be only a matter of time before she is fired again, maybe when the ballet troupe stops selling out performances.

"Heavy" ballerina reinstated
AFP
27nov03

A COURT yesterday ordered Russia's Bolshoi theatre to reinstate a ballerina fired for being too heavy, Russian media said.

Moscow's Tverskoi court ruled that Anastasiya Volochkova had been illegally dismissed and ordered the Bolshoi to pay her the equivalent of $8,900 in damages, the RIA Novosti news agency said.
The simmering feud between the famed theatre and Volochkova flared in September, when the Bolshoi said the blonde ballerina with model looks was too heavy for male partners to lift, and fired her.

The Bolshoi's lawyer Dmitri Lobatchev said yesterday the theatre would appeal the court's decision.

Volochkova has for months wrangled with the Bolshoi, with the labour ministry weighing in on her side and the media looking on in fascination.

The theatre said that the dancer was demanding unreasonable terms and Volochkova retorted that the troupe was simply looking for an excuse to get rid of her.

On September 16 the theatre fired Volochkova citing problems with her "physical form."

"Her physical form is definitely a serious problem," Bolshoi director Anatoly Iksanov told Russian television of the ballerina who has danced leads in such classics as Swan Lake and Giselle.

The theatre said the dancer, who at a reported 1.68 metres is taller than average ballerinas, was simply too heavy for male partners to lift safely.

"Classical ballet is intended for duets, with many lifts, and the ballet's artists are not in condition to support this, since they themselves are worried about their physical form," Iksanov said at the time. "I don't consider it moral to force them to do so."

The Russian press, however, has reported that the dispute may have to do more with Volochkova's ego than her size.

When Volochkova's last partner refused to carry on dancing with her, "the theatre got a great chance to rid itself of the burdensome diva with a special status in Russian pop culture," the Kommersant newspaper wrote recently.

If they are going to fire her,
then fire her for the real reason.

The reason they got zapped is because they lied,
and tried to insult her at the same time.
Their fuck up.

Just say she's got an "attitude",
or she is unable to work with the staff
or other things related to the real reason.
Then you have a case.

No frickin way she's fat in the real world. But if you do ballet you learn to accept different standards.

Fat is a misleading term here. After reading Peetster's link I see she's naturally a bigger person than many ballerinas and therefore heavier. I can kinda see their point and especially if she's a bitch you'd wanna get rid of her. I don't see how a 98 lb woman is all that heavy for a trained ballerino(or whatever a male ballet dancer is called) that is much stronger than many other men than you would think.

This is the truth. American ballerinas are considered huge by Russian standards and if you've ever seen one, this is obviously not the case. Russian companies hold their dancers to a very strict standard and they are looked at as highly trained athletes, not entertainers. This particular dancer decided to be a diva and her company felt that was unacceptable. She will not last and as soon as a loophole is found where they can release her, they will. It wasn't about the weight at all - just the weight she was trying to throw around.

Gotta say, though, that here in the states ballet schools will reject young girls because they're not built skinny enough, even though they can do the work. The case in point was a performing arts dance school in San Francisco -- a public school, so they had certain responsibilities that private schools don't have -- that rejected an eight-year-old because she didn't have the right body type for classical ballet -- they said. (She was big-built, not fat, and very athletic) Never mind that she was a skilled dancer, trained by her professional dancer mom and could do anything they asked of her -- and this wasn't a professional dance school anyway. Since it was a public school, the administration got slapped down and the girl was admitted.

Used to be a female ballet company around called Big Dance in which none of the dancers were under 200 pounds. Okay, there were certain things they couldn't do, and nobody was sure going to catch them. But they were very, very impressive.

ballet, cheerleading and gymnastics all expect utterly ludicrous things out of young girls. People who participate in these activities are many many times more likely to develop anorexia than those who don't.

It's all relative. 320 lb. NFL linemen are often considered "too fat" in training camp and must slim down to a svelte 300.

In no way is she too fat...for ballet, life or otherwise. If she's too big for the guys, then maybe they should train harder instead of making her lose more weight to a sickening size.

That's the same thought that crossed my mind. Instead of firing her they should make those guys hit the gym a few more times a week.

However, I think it's kinda fucked up that she sued and won money for this. Ballet is a business that people are hired based on physical features and abilities, and if she didn't meet their standards, they should have every right to fire her.

Yeah, good point.

If they fired her because she is a bitch and hard to work with, then they just need to say so. Blaming it on her weight just makes it look worse for everyone.

the only thing that i can see is that she's pretty fucking tall for a woman. that would also contribute to her weight, having "more space" to fill with muscle and fat. but their is no way that i would call her fat. she's very skinny.

Those guys must be pretty weak to not be able to pick her up. Seriously though, that has to have a serious impact on her. In her position it must be hard to be told your too fat or fat at all.

I think they (Western Media) misinterpreted the Russian word "bolshaya" (literally big) as "fat", when infact a more accurate word to describe "fat" would have been "tolstoya", I think the theatre was hinting at that she looks too big on stage, showing up her male and female co-dancers.

Having said that, IMO the theatre was just fishing for excuses, apparently she is a real bitch to work with, and took ages to learn routines, and when she did she made lots of mistakes.

You have to put it in context I guess. The Denver Broncos have a "small' offensive line (the smallest in the NFL), because the average weight of their lineman is *only* 287 pounds.

A 287 pound man is not small by any means, unless you're comparing him to NFL offensive linemen.

It's true, she has been reinstated.
The way I understood it, the 'too fat' excuse was just that, an excuse, because the reality was that she was acting like a prima donna and demanding all the lead roles. I have never seen her dance, or indeed know anything about her personally, so I can't debate the truth of these allegations.
But I very much doubt they ever really considered her fat!
