well... i think that the ~700 members who are active feel its worth it... the rest probably just come here to ask about how to shave thier bawls.. the costs you imply would be bandwidth and hosting, and this forum database is probably large now.. but for a forum, it wouldnt bee too much for a whole site... what im trying to say is, the reason it costs alot would be all the bandwidth.. thats the bandwidth from about 700 members... imagine the bandwidth fees if you had 31 thousand people actively posting and viewing and all that :P, anyways... i dont use the titty board or any of that... i mean there are ALOT of good posts out there.. and some strange ones... so people must find it useful .... people probable also enjoy the journals...

I don't want to speak for halx or anyone else, but I think it's safe to say that they'd rather have 31,000 peopleposting and discussion matters they find significant in these forums than 700 people having these discussions and 30,000 looking for pr0n.
Sure, the bandwidth would be higher, but it would be a bigger community, and thus more people donating.

I find it interesting that we seem to spend a lot a time talking about how people don't participate, or should participate, or are participating - but I think it's preaching to the choir because the non-particiapters aren't reading the posts they don't reply to.
I agree that being vigilant in any task is one way to achieve a quality product, regardless of what pursuit one is vigilant about, but I wonder where this discussion leads if the vast majority of people that view/reply are some of the 700 or so members who post already. I guess what I'm trying to say is, short of some algorithm that is agreed upon as a standard everyone must maintain or get booted, it will be hard (if not impossible) to generate quality participation on this board by doing anything other than being a quality participant and hoping others follow the lead. Any kind of cajoling, proselytizing, or even browbeating will do no good, regardless of the evidence (or lack thereof) that you present. I think that's the sad, true fact - some people care and some don't. I think it's hard, if not impossible to turn the 'not carers' into 'carers' without something that happens spontaneously within them that prompts them into action. And all we can do is demonstrate the desired behavior and hope for results. |

I say we give a warning... and say by the end of the month if they haven't contributed 50 meaningful posts.. they get cut. Its pretty easy to get 50 good posts in 1 month. Sometimes I can do that in one day. And if you've never posted.. you could EASILY do that in one day.
Is it worth my time? I'm like the 55th top poster or so, so I would definately hope its worth my time. Not that post count matters though, this forum seriously kicks ass.
