So I was at Waaru Maato (Wal-Mart, for all you filthy gaijin) the other night, and came across some new Axe anti-perspirant/deodorant, and decided to give it a whirl.

Prior to this purchase, I had been strictly a deodorant type of man; I always held the sentiment that preventing oneself from sweating, and releasing toxins from the body in such a manner, was not a very healthy thing.
I was tempted into giving the A-P thing a shot because I've used Axe body spray before, and really happen to like the Phoenix scent. So, I'm sporting it today, and thus far, no sweat...

My fellow men (and women): do you prefer anti-perspirants, deodorants, or a combination? Why, or why not? Hmmm?

I generaly go with the straight deoderant. Im not the kind of guy to have pitters (sweat streaks under the arms) all the time, so I dont care if I sweat. Also, I agree, stopping it cant be healthy.

Combination since at work i wear a shirt and tie, and can often get very warm.

I refuse to allow any chance of a pit stain.

Personally i also dont care if its unhealthy, I can sweat thru other areas.

To me, not using antiperspirant is like not using soap. I just couldn't imagine not using it.

Deodorant does not mask body odor, it just blends with it.

Nice to know Axe has antiperspirant spray now - thanks for the heads-up (just keep the arms down please ).

I accidentally bought regular deodorant once. That was gross.

I agree with Destrox, I can sweat in other places that don't cause stinkiness and pit stains.

I'm also not so sure about this new-agey "flushing of toxins". A good old fashioned piss does the job just fine for me.

I'm with you on the sweating-is-better-for-you thing.
I've always shied away from antiperspirants for the same reason.
Plus, they just feel weird to me.

I've stuck with Old Spice High Endurance for a while now. It's the only straight deodorant that does a good job fighting odor (for me).

I use antiperspirant, dont care for the wet pits. The human skin is full of sweat glands, and I think there are other places to rid of toxins, though I was not aware that the sweat glands performed this function.

Here's what I vaguely remember; your skin carries a faint electrostatic charge which literally pulls the drops of perspiration out of the sweat glands at your pits. Anti-perspirant, which includes aluminum, disrupts the charge and thus the perspiration isn't drawn out.

If you use this stuff excessively, it's possible that the pore will get clogged enough to get infected, and then you get a nasty boil right in the armpit. That's not happening to most people, but if you're somebody who baths only occasionally and uses anti-perspirant to compensate, you can get in trouble. A physician assistant I knew once, who'd spent most of his career in the Army called it "GI Armpit."

Depends on what sort of day I have ahead of me. If I'm going to be in low-intensity social situations, a deodorant is good enough. If it's a business meeting in July or something, anti-perspirant.

I don't spend much time thinking about how products affect my body. I spend lot of time thinking about the ones that affect my mind.

Anti-perspireant mostly. I'm almost always in a suit, and I think the absolute worst look for someone in a suit is the stained pits... You could be the best groomed businessman, wearing a $5,000 suit and $1,000 shoes - and you're reduced to "trailer park" in two seconds flat with pit stains.

I always wear anti-perspirant. I'm warm-natured and tend to sweat a lot anyway. The few times I've just worn deodorant have been uncomfortable.

A-P. Unscented. A couple of months ago someone alerted me that I smelled like a cosmetic fruit basket or something of the sort. Scented deoderant, shampoo, hair gel, cologne, body wash, moisturizer. Sticking with the plain jane now.

Sweaty pits just ain't fun and I have found no evidense to prove that using it unhealthy, if it was, the FDA would pull it.

Depends what I'm doin.. if I'm goin out with the girly dancing then I'm gonna wear an A-P and some Deodorant.. If it's just to a restaurant then it'll be just some deodorant lol.. But if I'm goin up the hill for a walk.. I don't wear anything. Weell except for my clothes..

in winter i suppose normal deoderant is ok, but i stick with anti-persiperent, stay fresh and still smell good!

Always anti-perpirant for me. If I use deodorant (or forget any spray), I start to sense a BO odour after a few hours and although it may only be feint to me, it really worries me I'll end up in a lift next to my dream girl and blow the opportunity of a lifetime. Confidence = antiperspirant.

I'm with Art on this. I just buy straight deodorant. Keeps me from smelling bad most of the time, and that's good enough for me.

On the other hand, I stay away from drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, etc...

Using anti-perspirant for me is like using soap when you bathe; it is a component of it all. I work outdoors alot and don't want to stink or stink up my shirts by keeping the underarms wet.

Stopping a few glands from sweating isn't apt to throw off my body enough to make it a problem.

I use Old Spice Red Zone Soft Solid Mountain Rush. I can't wear anything else. If I use regular deodorant that you push up and it's just a stick, then it clumps off and gets stuck in my hair. I use the soft-solid. It penetrates the hair and works very, very well. My summer job is in a kitchen that daily goes above 100 fahrenheit inside (up to 125 once) and I STILL don't sweat using Red Zone.

I don't see how I used anything else before it. Everything else simply doesn't work as good.

I use deodorant, Old Spice High Endurance as well. I know that it doesn't always stop me from smelling, but on high activity days, I simply wash and reapply.

Besides, I like the way I smell -- to a certain extent of course.

I dislike sweating.. the only time I do not wear ap is when Im racing or othewise working out. I find sweat to be highly uncomforable and quite disgusting.

I live in Houston and I do a lot of public speaking. Need I say more? I don't care if the keep-you-dry ingredients in AP kill me, I'll never stop using it. Never!
I'm okay. Really.
On a more realistic note, men and women who don't shave should use AP. The bacteria on pit hair reacts with the sweat and then you have your B.O. Nuff said.

I generally use some sort of scented anti-perspirant. I can sweat a lot under stress, and I don't like giving those bacteria anything to feed on. I don't have much stress these days, though, so I guess the sweat is caused by sitting next to my hot case all day.

Anyone got a price on a nice case cooling system?

I tend to sweat alot (what can I say, i'm a big guy), so I use Right Guard A-P. On a semi-related note, I have a friend who bought some of that Axe deodorant. As he went to leave his apartment, his cat started freaking out and hissing at him. He put the can of axe next to his cat and the cat ran away from it, growling. Needless to say, he doesnt wear Axe

there are some people (like me) that are allergic to the ingredients in anti-perspirant (mainly aluminum). if i use anti-perspirant, i tend to sweat a ton.. just deodorant is ok, but clear-dri works best 4 me

Blocking the sweat in your armpits isn't going to block enough to hurt you by retaining toxins normally secreted in your sweat. Keep in mind you're sweating pretty much all over, the rest just evaporates a lot easier because its not skin on skin, raising the temp of that area (which will up the sweating a tad) and it can't evaporate. Hence the sweat collection in your pits and crotch.

So...anti-persp/deoderant combo for me all the way.

Me too. It's a French company that makes it, and it wasn't available in the States until the last year or so... before then, my buddy had to smuggle a few cans of Axe's "Africa" (or "Kilo" here in the US) back from visiting his parents in Holland.

Axe's Kilo body spray is fuckin incredible, and I swear no girl has EVER had anything but wonderful things to say... and they stay closer... if not else but to smell that sweet smell.

Oh, and using a deoderant without an anti-perspirant is useless to me.

Sure unscented spray anti-perspirant. The a couple of shots of Bath and Body works Woodland smell good stuff for guys.

ive always just used deodorant
