LOS ANGELES, Oct. 31 — A lawyer was wounded Friday in a courthouse shooting that was captured by television crews gathered to cover a hearing in the murder case against actor Robert Blake.

This reporter hit it on the head - this lawyer gets shot (and more should too - IMO) and these cameramen do nothing to nail the perp - are they scared they'll get tagged? want to get the exclusive and not help the victim? or just plain media mongers that don't give a shit?

holy shit, that's fucked up. i can't believe that none of those cowards attacked the guy. he clearly didn't have his gun out anymore and was just walking past them calmly. it only took one person to tackle him, and by how he looked the reporters should have known that one or two of them would be enough to take this guy down. as i watched it, i was trying to think to myself if i'd have the courage to do it, and i may not alone, but if one or two of the people around me agreed, i'd surely go after that guy.

I think people in this country numbed by the violence we are seeing daily. We have become spectators, hoping that it won't be directed at us. This is sad. Especially that the camera men didn't do anything. They were the ones watching the whole thing.

Yeah, it's upsetting, but honestly I can't say I'd do any different.

This is LA County Courthouse, swarming with cops. I'm a cameraman for Court TV. Am I really going to take on an armed man who's just shot somebody? Or am I going to stay the hell out of the way and let the professionals do their job?

What's most disturbing to me is not that they didn't leap into the fray, but that they kept the cameras rolling....

If he was in a courthouse that had a murde trial going on you would think that security would be a bit tighter.I can't see how he just walked in with a gun in his bag.

It was outside the courthouse, so he wouldnt of had to go through a metal detector yet. And yeah I would like to think I would have jumped the guy after he started walking away, I think its rediculous that all those people just stood there while he walked away.

Aye. But odds are in that situation, I'd probably be one of the ones to just stand around and not confrot the dude. :|

When something like that happens, it takes a few moments before people can even comprehend what's going on. Most people do what their instincts tell them to do. The cameramen got live video of an incredible scene for the rest of us to see only because they followed their first instinct. Most people, no matter how brave they think they are, aren't just going to try and take down a guy with a gun because our nature is to protect ourselves over all others, and you never know what might happen.

Personally, I would probably have tried to take him down right away, but that's only because I have training in doing that type of thing. But I may not have, who knows. No one knows until it happens them.

What I find unbelievable is that this guy dodged like 6 bullets, everytime the gun fired. that's what made it more of a shocking sight; it wasnt like a struggle where if he didnt grab the gun from the guy who was going to shoot him, he'd be dead... he was actually dodging bullets

I saw that video on tv the other night

I thought the video showed just how stupid the perp was. First he goes and shoots like six times at the lawyer and misses everytime. Then, afterwards when he is done shooting and missing, he puts the gun up and just walks casually away. I mean seriously, did he think he was just gonna get away with it and just be able to walk away? What an idiot. I guess it's a good thing that one out of the many, many people actually took him down. That was one weird video.

interesting point for just how television news is selected. it only made our (aussies) television screens because it was phenomenal vision. quite macabre really.

mate, i´m fairly certain that he didn´t miss every time.
there was footage of the lawyer lying on the road with bloodstains getting treated by paramedics after the shooter had tried to walk away.

OK, the photographers did nothing wrong:

1) They recorded what happened. This is called EVIDENCE. Be REAL hard not to convict the asshole with all that video evidence.

2) They're photographers. Not doctors. Helping the wounded man is not an option. They don't know how. I've never seen a paramedic picking up a betacam and shooting a package for the evening newscast, so why should you expect a photographer to play doctor?

3) There were cops right there, in the area, running after the gunman. The photographer who was pointing at the gunman was doing so to make sure the cops took the right guy down. And it worked, because they did. Two cops converging on one nut. The odds are stacked against the nut. The photographer would only get in the way, so he should NOT go after the guy.

Yeah, your right, he obviously didn't miss everytime. But I think you get my point. The guy's an idiot.

Not every time, did you see the blood running out of th eentry wound in his forehead? There were two more shots that hit him in the chest.

What shocks me is not that nobody tried to take him down, or that the camera kept rolling, but that nobody thought to shout and attract the attention of the officers in the area.

it doesnt even look real... fucked up situation, yes.. but I find it hard to believe that the guy in the suit was shot with anything more than a beebee gun (at least from the one video I saw)

They did thier job just as they should have.
There are MULTIPLE armed gaurds around, comming towards the area right at that momment WHY get in thier way and possibly make a situation worse then it was? Would waiting 15 seconds for a gaurd to get the shooter that HAS ALLREADY shot help the wounded man?

NO.

If you would have tried to tackle the man while he was shooting at the victem you would have only made the situation more bloody.

They did thier part just as security was on their way to do thiers, and paramedics are being called to do thiers.

A jobs day done.

Even the cops interviewed said they wouldnt have expected the cameramen to have done anything different for that is their job.

Drop the morals and "Good ideas on how to blame others" and realize the reality of the situation.

Help was on the way from the first shot fired.

most people simply will not risk injury for anything besides self, wealth, or family... if family.

was i the only one that found that video funny? i mean, yeah, it must suck getting shot, but he was hopping around the tree hilarious, and then the gunman just walks away, that was fucking classic. but someone really should've done something about him. at least throw a rock at the guy, damn.

We studied this type of thing in my super-basic-elementary psych class, and it's been shown that in a large crowd, everyone assumes that someone else is taking care of the situation. People are much more likely to react when it's one on one, and they realize that they're the ones that have to act.
