To all:

First, I don't agree with The_Dude when he says enter any email. I would HIGHLY recomend that it be a REAL e-mail address. Just create an account on hotmail or yahoo for all your mag subscriptions. Some places will not accept your subscription if the e-mail can't go thru. Plus, if you are giving your REAL address, what is the point of not giving an real working e-mail address.

OK now for all of you out there, that are still a little sceptical about this, here is a link I came accross that has some insight into these "complimentary" magazine subscriptions.

Hope this helps.

Well I signed up for this, It's february and nothing yet, 3 months..

Magazine sells advertising on the basis of its circulation figures. It's the same reason it costs more per minute to advertise during the Superbowl than it does to get a Nasa space shuttle three inches off the ground.

I made that up, but it's fucking pricey. You sell into a publication on the basis of how many people will see it. If your readership is into the millions, then you're pretty much going to be able to name your price.

My guess is that they're adding all these complimentary subscriptions to their circulation totals and hiking the price of their ads accordingly to cover the costs. Probably changing the ratio of editorial:adverts too. I wouldn't be surprised if the volume of ads hadn't gone up since I last looked at Maxim (probably a year ago).

Most of these mags originated in Britain, and exploded in popularity during the mid 1990s. The last I read about them, they were suffering something of a backlash and most were losing readers. Maybe we have an answer?

But, for the publishers to sell to big advertisers, and to make money on a large volume of ads, they need a lot of subscribers. That’s where the complimentary subscriptions come in. Publishers use complimentary subscriptions to supplement the paid subscriptions when they need a larger circulation to sell advertising.
Man, I love being right.

I'm sorry everybody, I've long forgotten what website it was. The next time I come across it, I'll let you know. I just know it was something similar to this.

fik 02-08-2004 03:44 PM

Fuck that. I take nothin for "free".

Arsenic7 02-08-2004 05:44 PM

playboy and pcgamer would be a must have for me....better yet....a free subscription to Play magazine would be awesome. I think I'll do my own little search on google.

josh_s08 02-08-2004 06:05 PM

The annoying thing about this is Maxim and Stuff, to the best of my knowledge, are British-based mags, and all the links say US only. How fucking irritating.

runawayfetus 02-10-2004 04:47 PM

i will pay anyone who finds free playboy mags... which doesnt make too much sense cuz then i could just buy some..

runawayfetus 02-10-2004 05:59 PM

when will the site come back?! i want free mags!

Hedgehog 02-10-2004 07:37 PM

Maxim only costs $5 a year...it's almost free anyway. They must make money just by printing them.

Munku 02-11-2004 09:22 PM

5 bucks a year? try like 20..

PulpMind 02-12-2004 03:19 AM

H12 02-12-2004 07:50 PM

I've done the GamePro one before and that worked for me, so I trust the rest work too. I'm gonna try out the Maxim one, 'cuz I've wanted that for awhile. Thanks.

KungFuGuy 02-13-2004 02:10 PM
