College students, retirees share nursing home
October 18, 2003, 2:08 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Alvin Krueger, 86, has no complaints about the new neighbors in his retirement home. A bunch of college students, most of them young women, live right down the hall.

"Why would I want to move?" he asked, grinning broadly.

Students from Mercy College of Northwest Ohio have settled into the Park Lane Retirement Community, one block from the school that specializes in nursing and allied health education.

The college has outgrown the residence hall on the third floor of its building. Last year, Mercy put about a dozen students in Park Lane, a converted 1926 hotel that once hosted Bob Hope and Marilyn Monroe. This year 43 students are housed there, all but two of them female.

"I love coming down here every morning and having someone ask how I'm doing," said Danielle Noffsinger, 19, a sophomore from Deshler.

"On a good day, you get two or three hugs on the way up to your room," agreed Meagan Cook, 19, a freshman from Hillsdale, Mich.

The students have taken to quizzing their older neighbors about eating habits and medication for school assignments.

Most of Park Lane's 40 retirees are older than 70, and say they enjoy the company of the amiable and considerate students, who stop to chat or join games of cards or bingo.

Some students say their schoolwork gets in the way of doing more with the older residents.

"We're jealous," Cook said. "They're going to the zoo. We're doing homework. They have better social lives than we do."
so... college students... would you live in an old folks home? having visited many of them myself, i'd be incredibly hesitant, but when it comes to affordable housing, most students will take what they can get. howsabout you?

I like the idea that they're using the old guys as projects! I'm sure it's great so long as you don't want to make too much noise... and I bet it encourages the student kitchens to be a damn sight cleaner than normal!

on another note, any old folks here that have already applied to be transferred there?

I think it depends a bit on how you regard the elderly I think. You'll have to keep it down a bit more, but you have alot more of social contact with people that are glad to see you, or are generally interested in how you are doing. Of course, there can be real pains in the butt amongst the old folks as well, so I guess there it's just like a normal dorm

I think old ladies are adorable and old men are funny so that wouldn't be a problem only real problem would be the whole having to keep it down thing. Unless they have all the students on one floor that is. Then you wouldn't bother the old people one bit unless you were banging on the floor. Be kinda funny bringin a woman up and havin a dirty old man smile at ya give ya the wink & thumbs up haha. Of course it would also be kinda weird if ya had to walk passed an old woman...they aren't stupid...they know EXACTLY what yer gonna do haha.

^^ Yeah I forgot about that part. They really do. But only the ones in the Nursing homes. The ones in retirement homes can still fend for themselves and wipe their own asses n what not.

Hey, if that's the career your looking at (nursing, residential coordinator, etc.) then it can't hurt to get your feet wet while your still in school.

It wouldn't be that bad....if i lived there and wanted to party I would probably just go to a friends. The best would be bullshitting with the older folks about WWII and things that didn't happen when I was alive.

I think thats a really good idea and if it works im all for it.

However personally I wouldn't, two very different ends of a rope and students years are stupid fun and very loud I dont think older people would appreciate this too much.

I would... old people are actually very cool, even if they smell like old people :P

On the other hand, Im not a female college vixen, so I probably wouldnt have that many stares...

The only thing that I might have trouble with is not making noise, I always have music on.

Living with my grandma and elderly cousin now while going to school. It's a wonderful experience, though it's far more enjoyable when you don't have to worry about school work and such.

But then again i have a lot of responsibility around here and it looks like the girls in the article don't... sounds great!

id enjoy living at an old folks home, those people have seen a lot in there lives. i find it very interesting when my grandfather talks about the old days, so im sure hearing it from a different perspective would be just as interesting. plus id be helping the old people by bringing them company so in turn both parties are satisfied.
