All-nighter

If you're unfamilar with the term, it simply means to stay up all night (generally 24hours straight ot so) and do some kind of work during this time.

I'am just coming off an all-nighter, finishing an assignment, and i feel fucknig shit right now. I still have a report to write up although that shouldn't be too bad. Anyway, being so tired for about 50% of my work time seems to be really ineffcienct, so next time, i wonder if i would maybe be better off just getting a few hours sleep or so and do more work when i am more alert/conscious. The main reason why i am so late is cause there was a misunderstanding/miscommunicaiton between some people and the lecturer, so it wasn't really a case of starting too late.

so discuss your effectivness or some of your experiences with an all-nighter.

Rudel73 10-15-2003 04:02 PM

I usually will drink lots of Coke or Red Bull and make sure i'm in a room with lots of noise or lights. It may be a bit distracting but you have to get your work done, it helps so you dont fall asleep!

But mostly i'm an over achiever so i'll get my work done early :)

Sleepyjack 10-15-2003 04:21 PM

I also got double fucked , cause i was working in the computer labs at uni, so i wasn't listening to music at all.

As for diet, i had one IC (iced coffee) and about 3-4 litres of water and some bananas and apples. They generally seem to work better for me. Although my eyes are killing me atm....

sailor 10-15-2003 05:43 PM

Noooo, dont sleep. Ive always found that when I am in a situation like that, getting only a few hours of sleep only makes things worse. If you can, just stay up.

Thats my experience, anyways. Yours could, as always, vary.

Macheath 10-15-2003 06:21 PM

I'm always amazed at the way I can get to 24-28 hours and start nodding off. At that point I can go to sleep or keep myself awake. If I stay awake, I perk up within 2 hours and feel okay for the next 5-8 hours. Weird.

Harshaw 10-15-2003 06:31 PM

I pulled a 48 hour all nighter once. I had to take a lot of walks and showers.

I was never more happy to be asleep after that.

Sledge 10-15-2003 08:09 PM

Yeah... two-night consecutive nighters fuck you up for at least a week after. I try to take naps at least to minimize the fuckage.

The_Dude 10-15-2003 08:12 PM

looks like i'm gonna be pulling an all nighter tonight + class @ 8 am.

got math homework due @ 3am & got an essay due friday & a quiz tomorrow & a program due on friday(this is easy)

powder 10-15-2003 08:13 PM

Hey, I am just starting an all nighter. I've got some shit that goes out to tender tommorow at noon.

clamburglar 10-15-2003 08:18 PM

Driving 30 hours: don't eat.

Schoolwork 48 hours: just do it or fail.

Defending Berlin against the allies: amphetamines... I've only done the first two.

almostaugust 10-15-2003 09:22 PM

I do a bit of night shift at the moment. It really fucks with the brain.

Lunchbox7 10-16-2003 02:32 AM

Between uni, work and training it isn't uncommon for me to go for 3 days with out sleeping. I average 3 hours a night. It messes with heaps but if you have the mental discipline to get through the period between your winds then you will cope.

Man, I definitely dont miss college when I remember days like this!!

TIO 10-16-2003 03:42 AM

Just did one last night, and on my way to the labs for another tonight.
If you're going to be doing a lot of all-nighters, learn to powernap. I can be asleep within a minute, and wake up 10 minutes later without an alarm or anything. It's incredibly refreshing. To learn, just start taking naps: lie down, and set an alarm for 10 minutes later. Get up 10 minutes later, even if you didn't sleep. Your body will learn to sleep when it can.
Also, coffee.

They don't HAVE to involve work do they? If so, I've never done one. :( But I've pulled many an all-nighter playing computer games, though it's been a while since my last. Pulled two consecutive all-nighters a couple of times.

I once went to a two night LAN. Only slept about 3 hours the night before it, and had a 2-hour nap in the middle of the second day. So over a 72-hour period, I had about 5 hours sleep. I fell asleep on the bus home, and missed my stop. When I woke up, the first thing I saw was a sign saying "Welcome to Rangiora." Rangiora is a town about 10-15 minutes' drive from where I was supposed to get off. Luckily some guys from school came past while I was walking and gave me a lift most of the way back.

I actually miss it, coffee, Dr.Pepper, and Copenhagen!
Once the paper was done, early in the morning, there is no better feeling of relief. What sucked was doing that and trying to study for a test, then not finding out the results for a long time.

Mael 10-16-2003 06:33 AM

I used to do them all the time, I still do them the night before pretty much every test. I find I do better when I'm tired. Everything is pretty fresh in my head... I guess essay tests maybe not as well, but anything else...

in the last 4 days, i haven't gotten more than 5 hours of sleep in a night, and i have a test tommorrow... if i get enough studying done, i may sleep since the test isn't till 2pm tommorrow, but still, i might stay up all. most of my all night "study" sessions end up with very little studying, a movie or two watched, some guitar played, and some web surfed.

i've also done the "2 nighters" a decent amount. i can usually go 50-60 hours without sleep rather well. just need caffiene and stuff to do. that's when i get most of my cleaning done.

Jasmar 10-16-2003 12:31 PM

Ive done 40 hours when traveling and i was alright the entire time. When you start nodding off go drink some caffine eat something and walk around for a little bit

Locke 10-16-2003 07:58 PM

I havent had to pull an all nighter at school yet. I have at work though. They didnt tell me I was to be working night crew that night so i didnt get any rest before hand. I was busy the whole night so I didnt feel tired at all. The mountain dew probably helped.

Chingal0 10-16-2003 08:05 PM

Its not often that i pull an all-nighter, usually i passout or end up sleeping out of pity for myself, but there was one time, back in '98 .. er, i have no clue when it was, but yea, it sucked.. was for some event or something, not sure, but sleep is for winners. dont deny yourself of it!

ghezzo 10-16-2003 08:13 PM

yea ive pulled an all nighter. I was actually at the beach. We were throwing a wedding at this campground. The night prior to the wedding we ended up having like a pre-wedding party party, then we went out crabbing at like 2:30-3ish, did that til about 5ish, and said well fuck its already 5 we might as well stay up and start settin the wedding up, so we ended up staying up the whole day until that night AFTER all the wedding partys and after party and after the after party partys

Lebell 10-16-2003 10:57 PM

Odd,

I'm coming off an all nighter myself.

In my case tho, I'm trying to get back on a decent sleep schedule, so an all nighter seemed the best way to do it.

monty121052 10-17-2003 11:11 PM

Try power sleeping.Twenty to thirty minutes and it keeps you going for a few more hours.

Semi-Normal 10-18-2003 08:59 AM

lol fuck that monty. Once I go to sleep I CANNOT get up for at least 4-5 hours, and even then only if it's something I really have to get up for, ie. work.

Roark 10-19-2003 07:10 AM

I had a friend in college who subscribed to this wierd regimented sleep schedule..

I tried it for about a week and just couldn't do it. It was more about programing your body etc.. I'll have to try and remember the name of this 'system'. Ended up sleeping like 4 hours a day today or something like that once you got your body used it it.

Have to hit google and see what I can find

If I am going to be pulling an all nighter, I better be doing something as cool as this guy. :-D

I haven't pulled a real all nighter since high school. I got close last night though when I didn't get home from IU until 4am. I was only 4 hours short of being up 24 hours straight.

Sleepyjack 10-19-2003 11:40 PM

ha, pulled another one tonight and just dominated my assignment (did a demo, opengl stuff). good times :D

mydragonfido 10-20-2003 01:52 AM

A Few hours of sleep is so much worse than just staying up!! I used to do this often my record is 5 days with no sleep I do not recommend this at all!! As when I went to sleep I did not wake up for 24hrs and still felt tired!!!

Sledge 10-20-2003 03:08 AM

Another all-nighter here. It's almost over and I fucking procrastinated through most of it. I suck.

GoldenOuroboros 10-20-2003 03:58 AM

Only all nighter I've pulled was back in my RPG days.. hehe.. :D

HugAPug 10-20-2003 05:13 AM

I just pulled an all-nighter too. Also procrastinated and got very little done. Maybe this "sleep" has its purpose...

Troublebot 10-20-2003 06:57 AM

Back in college I worked for the schoole newspaper. All-nighters for two nights in a row were a fairly common occurence. If I got four hours of sleep on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, I was the luckiest guy in the world.

Our darkroom was pretty far away from the composition room, where the rest of the paper was layed out. I worked it so that I'd lean up against the wall of the hallway and take a catnap while my body movved my feet along. Got a good thrity seconds in that way.

Plus, you learn to sleep anywhere. Can't even tell you how many tables I slept on... or under.

k1ng 10-20-2003 05:42 PM

I've pulled a couple all nighters myself. The first couple times i did it I decided to use caffeine pills to keep myself awake. Although they are effective, I don't like how I fell when I take them. Lately I've just been taking little walks or surround myself with other people that are awake. My manager uses Dexatrim (Green Tea) when she has to stay awake and she says it works wonders. I haven't tried it myself though.

LutherMac 10-21-2003 02:32 PM

I've done quite a few all nighters. Back when I was in retail, I once started hallucinating during one of my allnighters. Was adding up checks in the cash office, when I saw a number 7 jump up and start waving at me. I knew then it was time to go home.

Since I've been in the software industry, I've pulled many more all nighters, and once, even an all weekender. Gotta do what I've got to do when projects are due, and deadlines are for 8AM the next morning.

bing bing 10-21-2003 03:26 PM

i don't sleep on monday nights. I drink red eye platinum and have freezing cold showers to keep awake. 3 weeks of uni to go.

quadro2000 10-21-2003 06:45 PM

Never done an all-nighter. I guess just because I never saved projects until the very very last minute - just close to the last minute. :)

Church 10-21-2003 07:18 PM

I wouldn't get a few hours sleep. Its like teasing your body. If you give it one or two hours sleep, its not enough. All it does is gets you tired even more since your body actually has to slow down even more to speed up again, hence falling asleep, and then a deep sleep.
