Stereotyping yourself?
OK, this is a sort of joke thread not too be taken too seriously, so don't come here with a rant about you not mean to label people and about close mindness, superficiality etc cause normally i am the antithesis of this.
Anyway, i was thinking today that i wonder what people might judge me or catergorize me as (normally on first impressions)? Basically for me it is either a geek or a jock. I am studying software engineering and quite enjoy playing around on computers, although i am not really as smart or computer perceptive (think like a computer :p ) as some of the others studying the course. So thats my main tie to the geek label. Although on the other hand, i am relatively fit and play lots of sports and physical activity, although am far from elite. So i don't really fit the geek look (skinny glasses), although i might i guess :p i'll post my pic on the exhibition forum soon, as soon as i get hold of my bros digitaql camera. Although that self assement is biased and also 2 dimensional, i basically i have this ambilvalence of geek and jock which makes a "gock" :D Anywho, thats enough about me, just for a bit of a hoot what sterotype do you fit best? Although ultimately, i am myself, like you, somehow.... :icare: take care, now. |
I am a geek. Non-specialized geek. I like books, movies, computers, art, music, all that crap. I fit the skinny stereotype but my vision lives up to pilot standards. Although I'm all-american I have a lot of French blood. Which people love to expose, all in good fun of course. So I am a frenchy geek.

I am average Joe..... decent job... ok cars... ok house. A wife, 2 kids and 2 cats. I like all sports. I like to goof around on the computer. Everything about me says Average, and you know? I am ok with this.

at one of my elementary schools I was called "rich white boy"... I'm not rich by any stretch of the term, but the school was literally across the street from the housing projects, and I was quite in the minority there (not only as someone who had more than a few blocks to commute to school, but as one of the 4 white people I ever saw in the school).
These days I'd say I'm a geek. I like computers and technology and I like to be informed on a number of subjects. I enjoy playing sports but I don't really like watching them. I'm an animal lover (no not literally!) but I'm not a psycho vegan PeTA memeber or anything. I'd go on but the longer I talk the less interested you must become ;P |
no one has ever put me into a group category.
I assume that's because I don't fit in any. |
Geek-artiste - I'm a CS concentrator living in our Art Program House. I like to make shit in Photoshop. I would like even better to program Photoshop, but that's a few years down the line.
|
I'd go with geek also. The people I work with say that I'm not, I dont know why. I read, play video games, watch movies that some of them have never heard of and will go to plays. Ah well.

Hail Citizens!
I am an aberration born out of time. -GH |
I definitely rank in the broke-ass college student stereotype, as my clothes continue to deteriorate and I have no money to replace them (same goes for my cars). Not sure what the full beard puts off, people walk into my home, and see all the electronics, computers, and such, and instantly know I'm a geek (which I'm proud of). Unless I'm going to a specific destination where dogs are not allowed my dog is always with me, so then I'd be the stereotypical animal lover. I guess, the full beard, generally flannels in colder weather, and my rottweiler looking dog (rottweiler/blue heeler mix) and the fact that most of my clothes are blue I know LOTS of people think I'm some sort of gangster, nope, just like the color blue, and although my dog acts ferocious when he first meets people he's gentle as can be. I'd love to get rid of that gangster stereotype, but oh well I always smile at everyone I make eye contact with (strangers, friends, angry looking fellows, anyone), and well that's me and first impressions in a nutshell.

I am like no one I have ever met.But I do notice how people try and fit in to certain groups.Could be lack of identity.
|
I'm a "Hungover Anti-Social Hipster"
That's at least how Hal described me. |
Funny how you can always stereotype another person, but never yourself.
Anyway, my stereotypes: - geek, being computerscience student and being skinny - absent minded professor (yes already at 19 I can be so preoccupied by my own abstract thoughts that I forget there even is such a thing as the Real World (tm) - poor collegestudent, this kinda ties in with the professor thing seeing as I have NO idea what fashion is and no matter how hard I try I am always wearing old clothes from fashion 2 decades ago. Those that see me walk see a collegestudent, those that know me a little see the geek and those that know me better know I AM the professor. ;) :p |
According to the people around me I'm the "funny scary weird tattoed skinhead biker guy"
But if I were to stereotype myself... I'd say I'm pretty much a regular dude with extreme tendencies, I guess... |
I intimidate people because I have an up-front attitude. And, I listen to punk music. So I am automatically sterotyped as a punk. Which sometimes I don't mind. I do lately since Avril Lavigne is sterotyped in the same group.

the tables turned
i had been bartending for about 7 years in chicago, after 8 years in south carolina & e. lansing, mi. mid '30's, gray hair.......i went to the grocery store one day after my shift......~3:30 a.m.
i notice this couple following me around, mocking me: (in a geeky voice) "hmmm, what would ethel & the kids enjoy for dinners this week??" and so on. i looked around, incredulous that they could possibly be hazing ME?!!? i said something to the effect that they were SOOO cool with their quirky glasses & footwear and their perfectly rumpled hairstyles. seemed to slow them down a bit, but then i met them in the checkout line and i heard the hipster mutter to his gal, "fuckin yuppie, prob'ly gonna pay with an amex card." i pulled out my roll of beer-soaked bar cash to pay for the frozen burritos & flipped them off as i left. i'm sure the only reason this irritated me so much is because i AM getting old.......... |
Geek. Pure and simple...Odd sense of humor; can quote Python sketches; can build a computer from a box of parts; can wire up an entire home theater and make it sound its best; have a short list of friends; am married and in a DINK household. I even make faces at schoolbuses (they all laugh their asses off...its hilarious)
Yes. I'm a geek. *sigh* At least I get laid (so its not a total loss). |
I'm just another average joe.
|
i´m a fun loving romantic.
|
eh... i suppose i fall into the fat dimwitted goofball who knows enough about computers to be dangerous but not enough to be useful category.
can't say there's much demand for the type, but i'm trying to get by... |
The dropout

Turns out that people think I'm emo/poser punk... :O
I think I fit the asian geek stereotype pretty well too... |
Everybody calls me strange.
So I guess I'm strange. I used to walk around telling myself that people don't understand me because I'm too smart. Now it's different. These days, people don't understand me since they don't speak English. Aw, fuckit, I'm a weirdo. |
Goth. Gloomy doomy hip hop goth.
|
I want to be a geek.
They won't let me in the club, though. Something about my math skills. I failed Fundamentals of Math. Basically, I'll leave it up to you to stereotype me. |
If you go off the Breakfast Club stereotypes Im a combination between the criminal and the jock.
|
I'm mexican so I automatically get catagorized into many of the many stereotypes of my ethnicity. It's usually "Yes I speak english, no I don't speak spanish so don't ask me how to say something, NO I don't work here!, no I don't eat beans, tortillas, taco's and burrito's on a daily basis, etc." I only experianced those kind of stereotypes when I lived in a pre-dominantly white area of Texas though. Most other areas of Texas I've lived at were prolly like 80% my ethnicity so in these areas all the normal stereotypes you would fit someone into I can guarantee you I either fit into none of them....or everyone I know labels me in a different one. I dunno if I'm smart really I'm kind of intelligent but mostly witty not like your true smart guys who never misspell a word or have perfect grammar, etc. One minute I can engage in intelligent conversation and the next I'll be just as crazy and stupid acting as the next guy. As for stereotyping by dress no one could possibly pin me because I'm always dressing different. My music taste is also extremely broad I'm very eclectic and because I'm an emcee people might think I'm only about hip-hop which couldn't be further from the truth cause I'm also a choir boy n shit. So nope it's impossible to put me into just one stereotype. It'd have to be many.
Asta!! |
I'm a geek at heart, but apart from being a little shy and quiet, I'm reasonably sociable and can talk about non-geeky things. I don't think many people would pick me as a geek straight away. Hence my screen-name, Semi-Normal. It was taken from the title of a song, but I think it suits me.
|
lets see....
In my life I think I've been everything at one time and taken influences from that to what I am today. so.... I'm a Geek Jock Prep Goth Goodie Goodie Hacker or if you prefer a Geeockepothoodacker that's me |
Hmm, I have been many things in my life. I was once a:
goth pagan nerd prep good girl the loner the teacher the musican a follower a leader a nerd pot head drinker trouble maker princess (daddies little girl) tom boy photographer and now in my current state in college i am a total nerd because of my major which is geology, meteorlogy, geogrphy, and geospactial analysis. so that makes me a: rock hound cloud watcher weather chaser map observer oh ya and im also a peot you should read some of my stuff on the literature section. |
how about the starving artist? haha
or "art school loser" |
Im a thick Mick
|
I refuse to stereotype myself, as I was assaulted with stereotypes throughout my life. Some of the categories I've been thrown into are:
Loser Big dumb fat kid (I wish they could see me now) Weirdo Scary freak Dork Nerd (not in a good way) Geek Hacker "Potential security risk" (This was after the Columbine shootings. When you hang out with the goths and happen wear a trenchcoat and listen to loud music, people make assumptions. It wasn't just kids who thought this. We would get in trouble when people threw food at us in high school.) |
Aloof niceguy
|
I proudly wear my geek badge. The more kids used to make fun of my geekdom in school, the stronger the geek became.
I can build and fix computers, I can write some pretty funky code, don't have alot of friends, non-threatening personality, etc. Its a boon and a curse... |
Over-achiever in everything I enjoy, lazy in everything I dislike.
Oh, and a bad-ass to the lowest-degree possible. |
I'm a stupid kid.
