In school I remember the light up shoes too and pogs....also the things that fit into a three ring bind that you play different games on with coins where popular. Also Zubaz pants where cool too. And mini basketballs where fun to play in the playground with cause you could really make a game of basketball fun.... |
I think I have seen or been a part of every fad mentioned in this thread through school. Wow
In elementary I was into, wall dodge ball, the fastest runner of our grade; I was the fastest in fourth grade woot!, tetherball, sports cards. Oh and wearing backpacks with just one strap over one shoulder, having both straps on you were considered a nerd, loser, etc. Junior and senior high I was into, making bombs, potatoe guns, shroom picking and selling, shoplifting, bmx, laserpointers, egging cars. |
Man does this thread bring back memories...
I remember pogs and Magic the Gathering. I didn't do them at the time, but sorta got into both, years after the initial fad. Magic is still decently popular around here, though pogs have all but disappeared... And for some reason, in elementary and middle school, there were different "cool" ways of wearing a backpack. At first, just having one strap around the shoulder was cool, and then later having both straps on was cool, and then it went back to one strap, etc. Now, messenger bags are getting pretty popular. For me, the poppers, yo-yos, and light-up shoes came and went pretty quick, like within two weeks. Trapper Keepers completely rocked though, i think that one went on until early on in middle school. I never had one though, and I remember being jealous of all the kids who had them, I really don't know why. Kickball was the really popular sport at my school, the tetherball poles were always abandoned, though I loved tetherball. |

Off in Kalamazoo/Portage, everyone plays euchre hell... if you don't know how to play euchre and you live in Michigan, you must've just moved within the last year and you havn't made many card playing friends |
Euchre was in southern Minnesota, as well

Yar, when I was still in elementary Pokemon Cards and games were the fad. I wanted to play soccer :(

I spent pretty much every lunch hour and spare period through high school playing hacky sack.
In elementary school dodgeball, was the sport of choice. In the winter, snowplows would plow the schoolyard, leaving a couple of 18-20 foot tall hills of snow, so we played "Kill Hill". The goal of the game was to make it to the top of the hill. Once you got there, you pushed anyone who would try to take your spot from you down the hill. The school administration put an end to that game. |
4-sqare & teatherball were popular in grade school.
middle school there was wild hair (mile-high bangs), pogs, writing on your Jansport backpack, Hypercolor shirts, that African colour/pattern, one or two braids in the hair (which my friend & I started) & also adding beads to them, penny loafers, air pump sneakers, and Vanilla Ice- Ice, Ice, Baby. high school it was khaki pants, polo shirts, eating lunch in the courtyard, being buddies with the security guard, Nirvana & grunge, The Gap & Eddie Bauer, going to football games was even a fad for not-so-popular kids. Man, I know I'll think of more............ |
i remember chain wallets, and pogs

Ah, the big Slap Bracelet Ban. They were banned at my school because the cool game to play was "see how hard you can snap the bracelet on someone else's arm."
We played Euchre at lunch, too (I'm from Ohio), although sometimes we'd switch to Egyptian Rat Screw for a bit of variety. In 4th grade, the school sold pins/buttons to promote school spirit...I *heart* Madison, stuff like that. The girls would put a piece of masking tape over the school name, and write their boyfriend's name on the tape. When I was a freshman, it was cool to see how many air fresheners you could hang off your rearview mirror. I think the record was a guy that something like 180. When he opened his car door, you could smell vanilla all the way across the parking lot. |
