Job thread with very little forethought.
 

So, I just looked at some job postings online. They suck.

I make like, $13/hr with sick bennies: two weeks, three personals, HMO, dental, life, short and long term disability, quarterly raises until two years are
up...
So, I have an associates in computer hardware/software and I work at an unskilled job. I freaking unload trucks. Whoop-de-do.

But, based on what I see out there, I'm one lucky fuck.

So, where do I get off not being happy with my job?

heh...where i was living before i was making $7.75 an hour
cost of living was cheap as hell tho. in this day and age be glad that you have a good job with nice benefits. granted there are probably cooler jobs out there, be glad that you arent a jizz mopper or something. kick back and eventually something cooler will come around.

I have ALWAYS been apprciative of being gainfully employed, moreso after getting laid off 3 times and not able to find anything for 1.5 years.

When I moved to NYC and my promised job evaporated because the company folded. I took a position as a delivery guy in the garment center for US$4.35/hr. I was used to working 3 days a month as a consultant getting US$125/hr, suddenly I'm working 60 hour weeks and taking home US$180 for the week. Pathetic in comparison. But I was grateful that I was working, when the recession of the 90s started. I had lots of friends graduating from college and waiting for a job and expecting to get yuppie PAID.

yeah. work makes me feel good - good to be productive, good to be contributing, good to be necessary, good to be responsible...

I may hate my boss, my job and on occasion my coworkers, but I'm always extremely thankful that I'm being productive and earning a steady paycheck with benefits.

I have two skills that never go out of style: The ability to cook, and exceptional customer service skills.

I am employed at a local mom and pop and have been so for 5-7 years. I saw the rich kids make tons of dough, drive those expensive cars, pay unbelievable amount of money to landlord around here for the privilege of living in my community.

I was never jealous, I just kept working and chugging along working hard with my boss's. Although business has gone down, I got a raise, a bonus, I don't have to commute and have decent times off. Not following trends, working hard, and loyalty still have benefits that can't be measured with pay. I have been blessed and am grateful everyday for the wonderful establishment and bosses I have.

employment has always been an interesting situation. you go and do whatever some schmuck tells you to, and you walk home every week or two with some money. sometimes when you work hard enough or play your cards right, you become the schmuck who pays other people do to what you tell them to. it's a barter of money for time or vice versa, but it's always been an odd pairing.

what i think is the most odd is how someone judges what they think another person's time is worth. i have worked in many different positions that were esentially the same thing, but the pay scales attached to each individual job were wildly different. it's not to say that one job was more difficult than the other, meriting higher pay, it just seems that the schmuck signing checks saw it in his heart to give more compensation for my time... i still don't understand why one job paid better than the other.

billege, enjoy the position you have, it sounds like even though it's menial, it affords you benefits, both financially and otherwise, that will help you move further in your life. although you may not take much satisfaction from the position, you have a very generous schmuck signing your checks, enjoy that for as long as you can, and make sure you find an equally generous schmuck before parting ways with the first.

I'm trying to get hired back at my crappy ass job. I wanted to go somewhere where my degree mattered, I was even willing to take the 5 dollar an hour pay cut. But now that I don't have a car, I need a paying job.

The important thing to remember is that money is only part of the award for working. More important then that is the satisfaction you get from your job - IMHO. If you are not happy, find a career that better suits you. 40 hours a week is a lot of time to waste!

No matter what, there's always something to be pissed about at work. Where I'm at, they don't watch internet usuage, my boss is in another state, and everyone loves me, yet I'm unhappy. Since the cutbacks in March, my work load tripled, people in other locations like to pile the work on me, and my staff is very unappreciative of working in general. I just look at the fact that I'm still working, and go with that, <I>for now</I>.
