Will this promote peace?

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...rance_yoko_ono
Quote:
PARIS - Lots of things have been done in the name of world peace. Here's one that hasn't been tried in nearly 40 years.

Yoko Ono will invite an audience today in Paris to cut off her clothing with scissors in the name of world peace. The "Cut Piece" performance repeats a legendary show she did in 1964, well before she met and married late Beatles' star John Lennon.

The 70-year-old Ono will stand on stage alone and ask each member of the audience to silently cut a piece of her clothing and "send it to the one you love."

Ono says the events since Nine-Eleven have made her feel "terribly vulnerable." She says the performance is her hope for world peace.
My two cents: This will promote something. I'm not sure what, but I don't think I'll like it...

I'm not quite sure that Ms. Ono has ever been right in the head, but this display (and the fact that it will be a repeat performance) certainly reaffirm my belief that she's crazy.

Heh, I'm reminded of the episode of The Powerpuff Girls where Mojo falls in love with a monkey version of Yoko. Great episode.

I guess she could threaten to distribute pictures of the procedings if peace is not achieved.... that may work.

I wonder if there is an option to just donate and forfeit your right to a little piece of Yoko.

Um, I'm all for artistic freedom, but what does THIS mean? Like, she felt naked after 9/11, so does Yoko symbolize the American conscience, her clothes symbolize our sence of security, and the people cutting her clothes off symbolize terrorists?

I like how they "silently" cut off her clothing. As opposed to talking to her about her newest album? Or humming?

On a slightly related note, before the Iraq war started, I attended the local war protest. Everyone was murmuring the words "Give Peace A Chance" very softly. I thought it would've been funny if I got to the middle of the crowd, stepped on a stool, and with a megaphone called out the "forgotten" lyrics to the song: "Everybody's talking about Bagism, Shagism, Dragism, Madism, Ragism, Tagism, This-ism, that-ism, is-m, is-m, ism. Ev'rybody's talking about Ministers, Sinisters, Banisters and canisters, Bishops and Fishops and Rabbis and Pop eyes,
And bye bye, bye byes."

Yeah, that would've been cool.

She might (big "might") look attractive to some very old world leaders... But off all the women who could have their clothes cut off for peace, I wouldn't even put her on the list.

Maybe if she offered to not send pictures of her standing in her underwear to everyone that laid down their arms...then maybe she'd have a shot at world peace.

As a very peaceful person I get annoyed by people who do stupid stuff like this. Getting naked for peace doesn't solve any of the violent problems in the world.

Go volunteer instead It's more practical, you would actually be helping someone, and you'll be making a positive statement as well.

If Yoko wants to promote peace, she can donate some of the rights to the Lenon / Beatles music she is in posession of to some charity that helps in war-torn nations.

Naw, that wouldn't happen.

her main contribution is as a performance artist.
she has done conceptual performance art all of her life.
this piece is entrely consistent with the rest of her oeuvre.

if there's an issue with her it's the same blind spot that most contemporary visual artists have. their tradition is hermetic and irrelevant to the rest of the world.

her attempts to cross over into the world of mass media have been unsuccessful as evidenced by the comments above.

they still teach all this stuff in art school.

performance art can be a viable medium.
but you need to be a part of your audience - not stand above it.
letting them cut off your clothes is about disrobing the empress.

her problem, as is the problem with most public figures we encounter, is cancer of the ego.
