Why do we want avatars?
Ok, I have two reasons for wanting an avatar. First, to show off. I like what I did with the avatar I created, and maybe someone else will too. The second reason is more pragmatic. With an avatar, when I return to a thread I have posted in, I can very quickly and easily find where I left off by merely scrolling down the page until I see my avatar. Without, I have to go more slowly, reading the names until I find my own.
so, why do you all want an avatar? |
You could always ctrl + f and type in your nick to find your name faster. :)
|
The pragmatic reason can also be solved by using the search function ("Ctrl"+"f") built into most browsers.
Search for your name. It will be faster than looking for an avatar. |
Without faces, it's a bit more difficult to recognize people. The avatar helps me to recognize some others quicker.
The words and the posts are more important, but the avatar is a nice addition. Plus, it's fun to see what some people use to identify themselves. |
<b>spectre</b> I have to commend you on your brilliant idea and you speed with a keyboard and mouse.
|
I'm under the impression that many people want avatars so they can see JadziaDax's tits.
I can see why. |
because we are visual people, and we can more quickly attribute someones avatar to the person it belongs to rather than reading their name. plus, they just look cool!
|
It's also a little bit of personalization. I find I look at someone slightly differently depending on what picture they have beside their post.
|
...so I can stand out from the rifraff.
|
Because I am a vain and selfish egomaniac.
|
Why can't I see post counts anymore?
Have I been pressing buttons again? Anyway, Avatars. I'm in two minds on this. I like that you can follow people's threads easier, but I don't like that it creates a two-tier board where you automatically pay more attention to people with avatars 'coz they stand out more. And some avatars just look garish and a bit overbearing. My 2 pence given. |

I have one.
|
Self-expression! It's all about self-expression, man!
|
avatars are fun!
|
I agree with most of the comments, especially ARTelevision's.
The Avatars do act as a kind of bookmark for me. I can usually tell where I was in thread based on the Avatars. Also, I do like have something that sets me apart of everyone else. It ain't much, but it's my identity. |
i think avatars are a fantastic outlet for defining an identity in a world without faces.
me, i just want to be pretty again. i also think they really brighten the forums up. rather than just having the name and the gap between the registration date, there can be an interesting little pic or mov. |
If combined with the proper voodoo rituals, the avatar can become your avenging angel to smite the fools and control the minds of the weak. And who can resist the innate cuteness of a rat smoking a cigarette?
|
We are visual people, and all individualists to some degree - some more than others.
Our avatars are the face we present to other community members. Wel, that - and they're cool. |

the self expression thing...the finding posts thing, and besides, some of them are just plain humor value....all sumed up, avatars are just fuckin cool
|
ctrl + f. cool. I want a face to go with all of the names, not just my own. But, I wholly approve of the minimum post requirement to get an avatar. Now if there was just some way to distinguish between a 'quality' post and a 'whore' post.
Honestly, I've been on the boards now for about 7 hours out of the last 24 and my post count has only gone up by about 30-40. I guess I need to get on the stick... |
avatars would be great for most of us low posters, but what we really need is that members forum! STAT!
|
i like my olde avatar
it was the man and my olde username it was the goat, but it's taken now... :-( anyway, i have a question about avatars and usernames can i have my old username??????? No one has taken it, but it says that i'm not allowed to have it Also, how do people already have their avatars??? I saw that a few people, with a minimal amount of posts, had avatars already. Can i have one since i used to??? Also, why doesn't it show how many posts we have at the side of the screen anymore?!?!?!?! so many questions!!! PS avatars are cool, and they just add character to a persons posts. It's also easy to find yourself, or someone else in a thread. It also makes the posts posted by people with avatars look more 'professional' or something. TFP is all based on the fact that, you need to have a given amount of posts before you can get an avatar, so, those who have that many posts have been here for a long time, and are wise (message board wise anyway) avatars are a great thing!!!! |
cuz UT's cool

Second question: The post counts have been masked. If you want to see your post count, click on profile under your post. |
I like seeing what everyone chooses for their avatar.
It's simplistic, but it allows me to connect thoughts and posts to pictures, which helps me remember who's who around here. |
Who are all you people, anyway?
Ah likes the pitchers! |
The avatars look cool, give you an bit of insight into the person speaking, and help you find your posts if you don't want to use ctrl-f. They also make the boards look more interesting ;).
Oh yeah, and I'm with krwlz... when's the members playground going back up? |
It's another form of expression, and everyone appreciates an extra outlet, especially online where contact is so removed.
|
I thought my reason was obvious...
I know you're staring ;) |
Arr, I Likes to Show Me colors Matey,
Tis Easier ta Strike fear into the Hearts -o- the Enemy with an impressive Avatarrr, |

ok, makes sense what about the fact that it says that the username 'goat' exists, but really doesn't?? I tried to register as goat, but i can't unfortunately. PS, i was goat before. You might remember me. |
I use avatars to quickly find those I want to. I have a sweet scroll wheel on my keyboard, that makes finding myself or others very easy. Also, I like to express myself. The purpose of an avatar lies in its definition:
av·a·tar ( P ) Pronunciation Key (v-tär) n. The incarnation of a Hindu deity, especially Vishnu, in human or animal form. An embodiment, as of a quality or concept; an archetype: the very avatar of cunning. <b>A temporary manifestation or aspect of a continuing entity: occultism in its present avatar. </b> It is a temporary manifestation of my mood, or some quality, or idea I wish to express. I am the continuing entity represented. |
I care more about other people having avatars than having one myself. Why? Because, as someone else said, being a visual creature, I attribute the avatar to the person. I remember specifically one time with *Nikki*'s avatar where she had one that stood out so greatly and that I got very used to that when she changed it I could no longer ercognize her posts for a few days until I got used to the new one. Cheerios is another example - she had the same av for almost a year and then *poof* she changed it and it took me awhile to recognize the "new" cheerios. So, my biggest reason is that when OTHER people have avatars, I get to put a visual with the name.
As far as why I want one for myself? Same reason - it's like getting a face. It adds a greater sense of being and presence to my existence on this site. As much as I'd like to add mine however, I've opted to wait until I reach 250 posts as an example to all those complaining about losing their avatars and post counts. I'm not spamming the boards, not making pointless posts to the Titty Board, but I'm patiently waiting until 250 to upload my av. And I'm perfectly fine doing that. |
Because I made a kick ass avatar and, I'm still waitin to use it.
|
Jadz is great - I just love the way she lets her tits out to play.
|
heh... i just enjoy having a visual representation of myself out there... and yes, it's cool to get one early in the game as a mod, but i'm looking foward to the independent functionality to switch it up as my moods change. mine is always going to be the same, but will be ever-changing... i like that duality. makes me seem much smarter than i really am. ;)
|
Individuality, personality and entertainment value. I like seeing the avatars that other folks choose. They are pretty interesting sometimes. It's also a little bit of a window into their personality.
|
Aye, some of them has a decent entertainment value.
It's also nice to put a "face" to the name. |
