Charities (no links)
Hey peeps... I was wondering what charities you all give to. I know all my old junk goes to the battered women and children foundation. I was thinking of making a cash donation to the seeing-eye dog foundation (not sure what the exact name is) and.. ya know.. thought I'd spread the love.

Humane Society. Nothing wrenches my heart more than animals that can't defend themselves... (The dog in my avatar, Ryker, was a rescue.)
Canine Companions, too. |
I give to:
NC Food Bank Public Radio Revolutionary Afghan Women's Association Children International Defenders of Wildlife I sometimes give small amounts to other charities if we have enough that month. Sometimes I feel like I should focus on a "cause" and give a substantial sum that would make a real difference, rather than giving small amounts to a number of different charities, but these are all things I feel passionately about and I can't stand to yank my support from any one of them. |
Ratbastid and I also adopted a rescue dog, micah - they're the best! But I never know whether to send $ to the rescue organizations, which tend to have a no-kill, foster-home policy, or to the human society/APS, where I'm not sure my $ will do much to reduce the kill rate. Sigh. Spay or neuter your pets, folks.

Food bank
My church Local schools Woman's shelter Breast Cancer Research Children who hit me up for fundraisers when I have the money |
Habitat For Humanity. In fact I work for a subsidary of Habiitat for Humanity called Habitat Restore. We take in donations of building supplies and home products from people and companies and fix the things up and resell them for a reduced price. All profits at the store goes to Habitat for Humanity and we divert hundreds of thousands of items that would otherwise end up in landfills.

Battered Women's Shelter
Residential Housing/Living/Training Program for Cognitively Impaired Two orphanges Disabled Vets Anyone that hits me up (Scouts, local schools) while I'm out & about. My mother was a orphan and she probably wouldn't have made it if not for the charity of what she calls the Sally Ann (Salvation Army). I cannot pass by one of those bell ringers w/out pulling out some green. |
Church -- I videotape church services, edit them, and broadcast the tapes public access for shut-ins. Bought the equipment myself, pay all bills. Next week's show will be #342.
The local AIDS project A couple of beggars whose sad stories, I know for a fact, are absolutely true Any youth group that hits me up for raffle tickets. The Girl Scouts -- doesn't really count, because they give you cookies in return :-) |

I do breast cancer research and because I'm in the entertainment field I also donate to Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's charity and to the Christopher Reeve Foundation.
Also, I ran a program at work called "Call To Protect" where I had about 200 old cell phones donated to the Wireless Foundation, where they refurbish and re-program them and give them to battered and abused women. |
I have participated in Boy Scout food drives, so I can tell you they're quite excellent charities. Mostly they redistribute food to homeless shelters and things like that.
My family also donates various things, primarily clothes & food, to Goodwill. |
I donate annually to various charities, mainly the Salvation Army or Goodwill: food, clothing, and toys. Donating regularly is easy to do. Every year during the Winter season you will see plenty of food and toy drives. Every little bit helps, and it is so convenient that there is really no excuse to not contribute something.

I have donated in the past to the cancer society, salvation army, goodwill, and battered women's shelter. I probably do not donate near enough. Actually, I donate alot to my friends. I take people out for a good time when I can and pay for it. (I did it last night).

I give to Hospice through work. Plus church. and Salvation Army. Then once a month we pick a different charity to donate money to.
|
We give to the Arthritis Foundation and Salvation Army
|
I do United Way from the office. I also contribute to a regional - but internationally known - heart and lung hospital foundation providing extremely expensive life-saving operations for free to people who can not afford such procedures, with a focus on helping children from third-world nations.
|
Regular donations to the Salvation Army and SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). I'm a big sucker for any girl guides or boy scouts that go door to door, or anyone canvassing for things like the Cancer Society, Heart & Lung Association, etc.
I plan on supporting the World Wildlife Fund by "adopting" a tiger for each of my boys for a Christmas present. |
SPCA rules! So Minx, does that mean you'd be a sucker if I came by your door in my Scout uniform? :D
|
Hell yes....I love a man in uniform! :p
|
Sub for Santa - for about ten years. It is so gratifying to know what a difference it makes... And the food bank, too.
|
Music programs in our schools are getting screwed left and right,
I bought a trumpet for the local high school. I figure even if one kid that can’t afford his own learns to play on it…it’s worth every dime. |
