Tilted Reputations

Hello all. Today I thought of something pretty interesting.

When you read a post, do you look at the snappy titles, or do you look at who posted?

Are you more likely to read or reply if it has been posted by someone with a reputation on the forums?

People like...
....Hal?
....rogue?
...sixate?
...Jadz?
-etc-

Are you more likely to post a reply if they posted the thread in the first place?

I know for a fact that I check out who posted it before I read it or reply to it. Titles help alot, but if I know someone who posted it better, I'm way more likely to read and reply. I don't have time to read everyones, so I try to read the topics from people I look up to, or have a reputation on the boards.

So, who are you more likely to read and reply to? Do Reputations really make that much of a difference to you?

Psivage 09-05-2003 07:26 AM

I post if the thread interest me. I'm new here so I don't really know who post good topics. At the other boards where I go to, I look at the person name.

quantumburnz 09-05-2003 07:34 AM

Ya, I don't know anyone either, so I just read and post to what sounds interesting...

Cynthetiq 09-05-2003 07:38 AM

there are some people who's posts are always fun and interesting.... Marcopolo comes to mind...there are some favorites, but I try to read them all if possible, whent here are lots of them I try to read them via subject, but of course people put...Did you notice... or Hey! look here! which does nothing for me.

tinfoil 09-05-2003 07:46 AM

I don't normally look at who started the thread. The subject is all I need.

lurkette 09-05-2003 07:47 AM

I tend to respond if the topic is interesting to me, regardless of who posted the thread in the first place. However, there are a few people whose threads I'll check if I see their name on it (seretogis comes to mind because he tends to be very thought-provoking, since we have such different views on things). Replying, however, depends on if I have anything useful or original to add to the thread.

Fallon 09-05-2003 07:54 AM

Generally, I look at the subject. If I think the subject intrigues me, I'll then look at who is posting it. For me, the person who posts it has no real bearing on if I'll read it or not. Now that depends on which forum it's in. Generally, if I see a certain person posting a thread in that certain forum then I might not read it because of a personal objection to what they've said in the past. But generally that doesn't happen.

God of Thunder 09-05-2003 08:10 AM

Depends on the forum.

If it's General Discussion, Humor or Nonsense, then it just doesn't matter.

On any other forum, I generally tend to glance at most of the replies. In general, a posters status doesn't usually carry that much weight. Just because they may be a noob, doesn't automatically mean their opinion doesn't count.

Midlandmadman 09-05-2003 08:54 AM

I guess I respond to threads that look like they actually have a purpose other than racking up a post count..... I really don't like the cheesy guess what? posts or ask me, posts....

IC3 09-05-2003 09:46 AM

I don't care who started the thread...If it's of Interest to me and I have something to add...Then I will reply.

drawerfixer 09-05-2003 09:50 AM

I generally read everything written by Halx, but otherwise, I rely on titles.

bernadette 09-05-2003 10:05 AM

thread titles are what lure me in.

i do notice though who posted & who replies & although i've not been around tfp terribly long i am getting a sense for favorite posters now. :D

krwlz 09-05-2003 10:15 AM

I read the title, not the thread starter. But when in a thread, a lot of times i tend to read just the posters with avatars...The avatar sets the post apart from the rest somewhat.

Nothing againts newbies, but the avatar just catches my eye.

battlemouth 09-05-2003 01:47 PM

i read the title of the post and choose from that, i dont think i have ever looked at who started the thread and made my desicion off of that.

Cobalt_60 09-05-2003 02:01 PM

I usually just read the thread topic. Check it out and see what its about. Then if I can add anything I'll post.

World's King 09-05-2003 02:14 PM

I read titles first then who posted it.

I know people ignore most of what I put up because it's, well... Me.

Rodney 09-05-2003 02:26 PM

Topics, primarily; personalities, secondarily. If it's an interesting topic but posted by somebody who I know has a dogmatic position on that topic, I'll give it a pass. It's only a discussion if all parties are willing to consider the other side.

sexymama 09-05-2003 02:32 PM

I usually look at new posts first, then go by topic. If something interest me, it doesn't matter who started the thread as much as what is said.

numberfive 09-05-2003 02:41 PM

If Hal starts or replies to a topic then I'll read it. Usually because it may affect the way things go around here or shed light on something.

Flippy 09-05-2003 04:23 PM

Interesting ... I just read the subject lines :) It's actually never occurred to me to read the poster's name before opening a thread.

Kyrin 09-05-2003 04:56 PM

On most of the forums, I never even check who posted something, I just read based on the subject...
Now, on the TB, it was entirely different, if it was posted by LD or cchris, then I was definately interested, otherwise, I would just go by the subject again...

oberon 09-05-2003 04:57 PM

I'm with Flippy. Who cares who posted? Just don't waste time or bandwidth on something you aren't interested in.

WhoaitsZ 09-05-2003 05:38 PM

if it is interesting to myself or is posted by someone I like and share interests with, i read.

if not, i do not.

Kaos 09-05-2003 07:53 PM

I only get as far as the Subject...if it interests me, I don't care who started the discussion.

viejo gringo 09-05-2003 08:17 PM

I look at the title ---to many new people since V4 came up...

Same here.

Double D 09-05-2003 10:49 PM

I look at the thread topic.
Who posted it is very secondary.

However, there are a few that I would look over based on my knowledge of the poster, as there are a few that I would skip for the same reason.

I respond if I have an opinion on the topic. Hopefully, I can add something to the discussion.

fuzzix 09-06-2003 03:53 AM

Reps don't influence me, everyone is interesting - i look for the good titles.

Baldrick 09-06-2003 03:54 AM

Even though I'm too new to know (or care) who posted what, I'll always look at the subject first. Doesn't matter who posted the thread, if the subject doesn't interest me, it's not meant for me and not worth my time.

neddy65 09-06-2003 05:06 AM

thread titles lure me and not the poster although there are some i look for just because they interested me before

Sleepyjack 09-06-2003 07:27 AM

reps make no difference. Although it's sometimes nice to look at peoples funny pictures as their avatars, not that, that gives them any more credibility or "worth".

Always threads. Like this one :)

Same with me. If Halx has his name attached to it I'm more likely to read it. Don't really pay attention to anyone else.

EROK81? 09-06-2003 01:00 PM

I usually go by titles as well. Not so much on here because I am pretty new and don't know everyone.

On some of the other boards I post on I go by who I know ect.

The title does draw me in the most though. If there is some huge post by someone I don't "know" I won't read it most of the time. I 'll wait for someone to comment then go back and re read it if it is any good.

chavos 09-06-2003 11:26 PM

i try to ignore threads started in the acadamy made by known flame warriors...but other than that, i will use avatars to find my favorite posters in long threads to see what the arguements are.

some authors/artists/exhibitionists always get my attention when the post...but i usually try to get to what the newcomers post.

legolas 09-07-2003 11:46 AM

I strictly read the subject title. If it looks interesting or something I can help/comment on I'll go inside and take a peak.

a2k 09-07-2003 12:02 PM

I pretty much just go by the subject...

marcopolo 09-08-2003 06:35 AM

A snappy thread title draws me in for a closer look everytime .

water_boy1999 09-08-2003 08:49 AM

I go for what looks interesting and what I might like to respond to. I also respond to posts that I have some personal life experience with, i.e. Health and Fitness, Sexuality, General Discussion and Members Playground, etc...

GakFace 09-08-2003 11:43 AM

I go by the topics. Sure there are a few people on here who I'll read their posts, but if i'm not interested at all in it, I probly won't take the time to click it. (So what if I like the person, If I have no clue what that gun is, it won't help to read the post ;))

nostalgic1 09-08-2003 11:46 AM

i rarely ever look at the post starters... if the subject is interesting.. i'll read.. and if i have something worthwhile to say.. i'll say it...
