I've got about 200 cd's and 40 GB of legally downloaded jamband (phish, grateful dead, etc.) concert recordings (all in shn, no sound loss like mp3). There are a lot of bands that allow and even encourage people to record their shows and distribute them freely. Check out www.etree.org or www.furthurnet.com to see.

Holy Shit! some of you guys....wow....

I have a little over two gig. Of that, about half is personally ripped stuff from my CDs; 1/4 of it is radio and television stuff I've downloaded (Monty Python skits; comedy shows) and the rest is illegally downloaded stuff. I run it on my computer in between checks to see what I like.

10,000 songs?!?! how in the heck do you listen to all that? Wow

between 2500 and 3000, 30-40gigs worth... probably due to an inordinant amount of radio mixes (radio 1 essential mix, digweed @ kiss100, festival recordings, etc. etc). Contrary to what some have said, every song ive download i enjoy, and will listen to at any given time. Just depends on the mood. I purchase a fair amount of cd's, but a lot of what i get are b sides, unreleased tracks, or foreign releases, much of which never finds its way to the US. I dunno, i feel justified for the most part.

Taxes on recording Media

It's interesting that you should mention this... in fact the media tax is already there. The tax was brought in on cassette tapes in the 1980's and on cd in the year 2000.

I am glad that you mentioned this point.. I had forgotten all about it. AND I AGREE COMPLETELY that it is a download fee as far as I am concerned.

RIAA Sucks! They could have hopped onboard the mp3 craze and profited from it instead of fighting it. They deserve what they get!

p.s. 2500 Songs and counting!

I've got about 8000, of which about 3000 are rips from my own CDs.

I downloaded fewer than 100 songs in the past year however.

699 tracks in playlist, average track length: 3:45
Playlist length: 43 hours 43 minutes 45 seconds

All illegally downloaded. If it weren't for peer to peer sharing I wouldn't have found over 3/4ths of the songs I love.
Some day when I'm financially stable or if some sort of effecient way to buy MP3s in mass quantities is introduced, I will develop a completly legit collection. I rarely like more than one or two songs on a CD even the least bit. Paying for the entire thing to get two songs is absurd.

I have 0 MP3's on my PC but my brother has about 11,000 downloaded (and kept). He only keeps the super-quality ones as well. Downloaded...and not kept? Maybe 25,000 at least? I suppose this thread is talking about how many you've DL'ed and kept, in which case my brother has 11,000. No bullshit .wavs, videogame soundtracks, or ripped songs either.

A few hundred. Generally the quality is uneven so I download to "sample" a band or artist I've never heard before. If I like, I buy the CD otherwise I dump it.

Downloading is a good way to get the older/rarer tracks though, I've found some gems that you cant buy in the music stores anymore.

guesstimate about 200, but I don't think any of them are going to get me in trouble. Mostly weird duets or unique covers, or classic country staples and other weird stuff. I tried purposefully to not download popular hit music, not because I thought it would keep me safe -it was before anyone worried about it, but because you can always find the popular songs, but I got a kick out of finding something rare or funny.

I download more movies and software than I do music because I don't listen to music that frequently(*GASP*) so since the time of napster and SX, I'd say my grand total is at about 200 (most of thats gone now).

about 14,000 mp3s on my HDDs, another 9 DVDs burned of dj sets, and another 200 of burned CDs. just over 700 albums. now considering that i actually own (i.e. have bought) over 620 albums (all CDs, no vinyl, no cassettes), i guess my illegal-to-legal ratio is pretty even-steven.
