Throughout my teenage years and into my early 20's I spent a lot of hard earned money on vinyl and tapes. Approx. 350 tapes and 400 records. When I found out I could download all those tunes off the net I went nuts and did it. Don't feel a bit of shame or remorse about it either cause there is no way in hell I'm gonna pay all over again for cds to replace all those records and tapes.
Last time I checked I was a little over 4000 mp3s. Last edited by Cujo; 08-26-2003 at 06:26 PM.. |

whatever happened to hotline for mac? the first and last time i saw it was about 6 or 7 years ago, but it looked pretty cool... I think that was my first exposure to p2p filesharing come to think of it...
I've got somewhere between 5000 and 7000 mp3s on a hard drive around here, plus 15 mp3 cds full that i can't seem to find anymore. And I've downloaded less than 20 songs in the past year. Most of my mp3 downloading was done in the days of napster, of which I was amongst the first users (on a 56k, no less... or should i say no more).

I don't have any *albums* on mp3 that I didn't buy. All of the full-albums I have were already bought on CD. I do have about 200 songs that I didn't pay for - no band having more than two or three songs that I've downloaded from them. I refuse to pay twenty fucking dollars for a single good song and 10 other shitty songs. Put out a good album, I'll buy it. If not, I'll download your one decent one and that's that.

I've got 2000-3000 and have listened to all of them...hard to tell exactly cuz I've got some duplication in my directory structure. I've purchased exactly one CD in my entire life--Audioslave.
Yes it is stealing. Yes I will continue to do it as long as technically feasible. Meh. |

Overall I've probably downloaded around 400... Friends have sent me music online as well.
On my hard drive now I only have about 100 or so. And none sharing I always buy albums that I like.

One. Hubby has downloaded quite a few but I don't listen to that much music and and usually not picky about who I listen to. It all depends on my mood and the kind of music and rarely on whether I like the performer or not. Often I just listen to the radio or one of our several hundred CD's. I have such a wide variety of tastes that I don't bother spending the time or drive space on Music that I can get somewhere else without the work. The only one I downloaded I lost in a drive reformatt. It was an older song that I couldn't find very easily. It's been so long since that too I don't even remember the title well. Something like Wayfaring Travelor. It just seemed a little hard to find the traditional playing of it on a CD.

I've got about 1500 songs on MP3. On the other hand, I have about 900 CD's. I have bought plenty to keep the RIAA happy.
Of the MP3's, I usually buy the CD if the songs are worth a crap. Alot of the songs I have downloaded I now have the CD's for. I actually think CD sales would be down more without all of the file sharing. There are alot of people that I would have never heard if it wasn't for Napster / Kazaa / etc. |

hEY EVERYONE
Thanks for all of your submissions , I really appreciate your honesty. I used to have hundreds of songs but found that I never listened to them. I know that the RIAA doesn't give a shit about wheather or not your actually listen to the songs. All they care about it whether you have the songs. Which I am sure you agree is complete bull%^$@. Since I aquired digital cable for my home I listen to any one of the hundreds of comercial free "CD quality" stations that they offer as a part of the package. The funny part is that m new digital pckage offers more music for a lower price. ( I am paying for the TV anyhow the music is free) It's funny that you can't find Metallica anywhere on the digital system. Those losers are so worried about me downloading their songs ... and they aren't even good enough to get picked up by any of the hundreds of digital stations availble nationally. I figure that good music sells and crap won't. G'day Skippy |

As far as album mp3's, I'm not sure. I don't really keep anything but bootlegs. My main reason for d/l-ing mp3's is to either get the album before it comes out or to see if I want to buy it. After that I usually get rid of them. I'd say I have maybe 3 cd's of (studio)album mp3's. Bootlegs I prob. have about 20-25 cd's (mp3 format, not decompressed and burned). |

Spidey. I appreciate your candor. I used to have a few thousand files but now I haven't got any. I just didn't listen to the music. I also don't buy any more commercialy produced CD's unless I buy them from the band I have gone to see. Live music rules!
I also have Cable radio at home... that makes a huge difference. |

i fully understand what you mean by not listening to them anymore. I mean seriously if you have over 2000 mp3s thats roughly a billizion hours of music and no way on earth would anyone be capable of listening to all that. I believe the one true reason why people have so many is for bragging rights. I mean i notice this being a common topic among friends, "i have x number of mp3s which is more than you y number of mp3s etc etc"

There is a movment in Canada to have an additional tax added to the sale of any blank media (tapes, CD'S, etc). This money would be given to the recording industry to offset copyright imfringment losses from downloading MP3's and copying CD's and DVD's. To me, this represents a "download/copy fee". I will never buy another pre-recorded CD.

i´d say about 50. its not that i consider it theft... i don´t... but i only have a dial-up. which means that it takes me about 15mins to download per song on Kazaa Lite. i just can´t be bothered most of the time.

Not nearly as many as I have. I share a dedicated server at work with a few other and between we've ripped ourselves, and downloaded, we have a little over 68GB.. Granted some of it isn't my taste, but we have access. I would ponder a guess that I personally have probably dl'd 3,000-4,000.

Seeing as i have over 100 music CD's STORE BOUGHT, and then about 20~ cds or so dl'ed from certain non-p2p places ;P
I feel that is entirerly in the margin of fair. Because about them 20 that are not bought, the over priced cost for the 100 purchased them 20. I refuse to use p2p due to the political BULLSHIT that they can get away with for gaining your information.
