RealOne is now a spammer!
Today I got an email from RealOne promoting some Rolling Stones thing...
1. It was sent to an email address I never use, never give out. It's just a domain I own that forwards to another. 2. To unsubscribe from the email list I had to jump through hoops (a spammer calling card). After they emailed me my password I realized it was one I would have never picked or thought to use. Don't support RealOne... they're spammers. |

hard to know who you can trust with your email account now-days.
i use a hotmail account for suspicious things that require your email to register, like fileplanet.com and apple quicktime. then i only use my normal email account for things i trust and to give the friends etc. even my trusted e-mail account started getting spammed to the point where i needed to get another one though, like i say, hard to know who to trust.

that's the advantage to owning a domain. i setup accounts like "mass@domain.com" for mailing lists and stuff. i can keep things way more organized that way. plus, i can just block certain addreses when they get too heavily spammed.
i also have an account on the domain for my own personal mail to friends. but yeah, i never liked RealOne's news flash thing. i had it installed for a few days, but got rid of it... fast. luckily i had RealPlayer 8 from before. when i need it, i install that. just make sure to not check for updates. |

Not much of a shock there. Just got to assume that if a company _Requires_ an email address to download/access something they are going to abuse it in the future. Probably the near future.

sigh
i feel sorry for the sites that carry real player movies, because personally i can't STAND having that trash installed on my system when your against a company (microsoft) that gives out its movie player for free with an operating system and your player has spyware or you have to PAY for it, it shouldn't have a chance but somehow it's still around

I installed Real One last night, against my better judgement, so my girlfriend could download some clip of other. This morning when I booted up my PC, I got six messages within 5 minutes from Zonealarm, because Real One was trying to access the net for various things all by its self.
Screw that, I deleted it. I just want a media player to play media, not have its own agenda, OK!?!??!

So in addition to being crap, now RealOne is evil? Jeez, you know you're in trouble when I prefer to use M$ software over your PoS application.
As stated earlier, you NEED to have a yahoo/hotmail address (unless you have your own domain ) to give out to anyone who wants it on the internet.

When RealOne came out I dumped that crap. Id rather have microsoft media player controlling my computer than some 3rd party. Atleast I know Microsoft won't put ad ware on my pc. The day that happens, is the day I switch to linux.

Don't remember what site it was that i visited once, but it automatically downloaded Quicktime to my system and now i can't seem to get rid if it. All of the suggestions to remove it only seem to work for that one session and the when i tuurn my laptop on again, it comes back. I don't know if there is any spyware associated, and it does't seem to cause any problems. It's just that i didn't ask for it s why can't i get rid of it?

If you own your own domain and have all email going to non-existant addresses forwarded to you then do as I do.
If I have to sign up with an email address, I will use the following notation: companynameSPAM@mydomain.net This will let me know who is sending me spam and who is potentially violating their privacy rule.

I've been using RealOne for about a year, I pay for the SuperPass so I suppose I am one of the 'bad guys' . I personally have no problems with spyware with them, I keep ad-aware installed, but I don't know if the pay version takes all of the spyware out of the equation.
As far as the email spam goes, more likely you entered it somewhere without thinking or someone else used it somewhere. I generally don't unsubscribe from spam lists unless they are from a known company, because that just confirms someone read the spam and gets you on other lists. Unsubscribing from Realnetworks would probably work. As far as the software goes, it is a bit bloated, but I used it to manage all my music, and also get all my video news from it. They carry the ABCNews 'live' internet channel; and also a bunch of other streams. I'm probably doubly bad because I pay for the Real Rhapsody service. I swear by it because you can stream over 500,000 songs on demand and the quality is great. Anyway, bring on the flames |
