A couple days ago, I adopted a male chinchilla from my local Humane Society and he is a real sweetie! He looks very similar to this guy, but his ears are spotted.

I have been calling him Chico ("little boy") but I'm not sure this will be his permanent name. Throw out some suggestions for a cool name.

My boyfriend suggested "Quaigon Chin" or "Double Chin." Funny, but not quite there yet...

Yea, they are expensive, cuz they live forever. I am thinking about maybe getting one. I still like cedar. I dont know if anyone gets the irony of this name, its like naming a cat woof or a dog chocolate.

Don't let those beady eyes fool you. They are pure cute furballs of evil. Poor creatures are slaughtered in chinchilla farms for their fur, but the important thing to keep in mind is that they are PURE EVIL. That is all.

The people who make and wear coats made of chinchilla fur are evil!!! It takes over 100 chinchillas to make one fur coat.

Depending on the color of the fur, different chinchillas cost much more than others. The standard grey chinchilla with a white belly costs around $70 from a breeder (more from a pet store, at least $100). Beige, tan, ebony, and violet chinchillas cost around $200 because they are more rare.

I only paid $45 for mine, as he was a rescue animal.

They can live to be 15-20 years old, so adopting a chinchilla is a long-term commitment. BTW, I kinda like the name Gus.

Maybe you should live with it for a few days and see what its personality is before you pick a name. That said, I've always been partial to Bitey, but here are some others:

Yeah, I was joking. They're illegally poached in the Andes and all they take is one square inch of the fur behind their neck. It takes several hundred for just a waist length coat. I forget the numbers of a full length one. I use to work with some at the city zoo and they're so adorable (but EVIL). For some reason one of the chinchillas would purposely jump into a bucket of water so it could enjoy being pampered with a hair dryer. I guess dust doesn't cut it for the little critter.

(EVIL.)

Anyway, I thought Ash would be fitting since in the wild they like to take dust baths in volcanic ash or something like that, and it kind of has the same color tone.
