San Diego State University, I think Playboy ranked it # 3 as a party school but don't quote me on that. All I know is it lives up to its reputation. Ironically we are playing BYU this year...haha that will be interesting.

KU is known for hot girls and a good journalism program.. and uhmm.. BASKETBALL

Milliways 08-24-2003 10:04 AM

My old high school was the filming location for all the school scenes in American Beauty. It was pretty cool; they beautified the campus and added a bunch of flowers, and (of course) changed the name of the school in the gym (although they kept our mascot). In a way though, it was kind of weird because when I saw the movie, I'd see the place where my friends and I hang out, and the ACTORS would be there instead.

Oh, and if I remember correctly, I think they took all the flowers when they were done. Or they died. I can't remember which.

Sounds like we may go to the same college.

If so, then I'd be correct in adding: Halloween, hippies, and (regionally) the Burrito Buggy.

If I'm not, then I'd be interested to know where you go, since we share a few details (including Matt Lauer).

frogger27 08-30-2003 07:59 PM

Emporia State University. It's one of the best teachers colleges in the nation, thats why I'm there. It also boasts that we were the 1996 National Debate Champions....woo hoo.
Go Hornets!

mystmarimatt 08-31-2003 12:54 AM

um, a good theatre program, which i like, but i'll be switching after a year to somplace better

RelaX 08-31-2003 01:04 AM

HR&O is known for it's tolerant attitude and amazingly flawed administration... I wish I could change college... :(

Darklight Adept 08-31-2003 05:14 PM

JStrider, we're not known for football...Texas Tech is known for Bobby Knight and the Bubonic Plague-losing Professor!

University of Florida, known for serial killer Danny Rolling, home repair mastermind Bob Vila, and football

DelayedReaction 08-31-2003 10:43 PM

University of Maryland. Known for Basketball and Riots.

We also have the biggest campus mall in the nation, but that just means it takes longer to walk from class to class.

Currently im eyeballing UNLV.. it's known for basketball scandals and an accredited Gambing and gaming institute.

how odd.

Seconded. Purdue is also known for being the first with a Computer Science program, but of course nowadays it's not necessarily the best. One of the best, but not the best. ;)

Hell yeah! I'm transfering to that school next this fall. SWEET!

University of Washington, known mostly for the medical research and our computer science department.

Oh yeah and beating the WSU cougars in the apple cup each year ;) .

Actually Gonzaga of all places throws parties that make us look like amateurs.

We're also known for our well defined "Cougar Calves" Which are the result of the very hilly nature of the campus/area in general.

Fire 04-12-2004 11:33 PM

my local university was the inspiration for the movie "animal House"

This town is still possibly the easiest place in the world to get laid without $50 and a condom being a prerequisite

dy156 04-13-2004 06:31 AM

Nicely resurrected thread!

My school's known for bad football, Baptists, and basketball players that shoot each other.
Another amusing tidbit: there are competing alumni magazines, one sponsored by the administration, and one by the alumni assoc. In the past year or so, they've both featured notable alumni, but there was zero overlap
.
Famous alumni the administration isn't proud of-
Willie Nelson-sings about drinking, Ann Richards-liberal that doesn't like Bush, guy that wrote the creepy Hannibal Lecter books-very unBaptist.
Famous alumni the administration is proud of-
Michael Johnson-track; Mike Singletary-Chicago Bears, guy that directed Waterworld-the biggest box office bust in history.
Amusing.

Mankato State University Minnesota...

#1 Political Science/ Law Enforcement program in the country

Also I am told we are the STD capital of the Midwest. I've heard some ridiculous figures that put the rate at something like 6/10 got one. At least we don't got our own disease such as Gopher warts like the U though.

RoboBlaster 04-13-2004 07:41 AM

Transylvania University. I'm not kidding, it exists. In fact, it has existed since 1780, first college west of the Allegheny mountains, 16th oldest in the nation. Once called the "Harverd of the West."

Marburg 04-13-2004 12:00 PM

St.FXU -- Top rated undergraduate university in the country!

Woot Woot!

Clarion University - Known all around the Clarion World for having
NOTHING TO DO !

Seriously, I mean, sure, most smaller colleges have
nothing to do, but even most our teachers don't
know what a kid could do around here. Everything
closes at 5 or 6 PM on Weekdays and most stuff
is closed on Weekends. Hell, even our student
run book/clothing/otherstuff Center is closed at 5.

Redjake 04-13-2004 05:50 PM

it's all generic :) all colleges claim to have the same stuff, especially when it comes to drugs and beer.

but, my college is most definitely known for the reefer and "partying." in fact, my dormitory was at one point considered one of the top five best places in the United States to obtain easy reefer without getting caught. not sure who conducts those type of surveys, but it was in Time magazine. the parties are crazy I guess. I don't party.

onodrim 04-13-2004 07:03 PM

I go to Illinois Wesleyan University, and we're known for our music and science departments mostly. Which is of course one of the reasons I choose to study music there. :)

Ralvek 04-13-2004 07:15 PM

Kevin Sorbo, AKA Hercules, graduated from my alma mater.

Speed_Gibson 04-13-2004 07:53 PM

never went to college outside of ITT Tech, but the schools nearest to me are University of Idaho (five minute walk to campus from my apartment) and WSU over in Pullman which is a about 9-10 mile drive.

I am guessing that the U of I is known for sucking at sports and hosting the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival every year.
No clue what WSU has outside of that Ice Cream Shop (Ferdinand's or something to that affect) and Beasly Coliseum, but the Cougars do seem to be a hell of a better team than the Idaho Vandals*.

*this coming from a complete idiot sportswise that just found out that Gonzaga is in Spokane rather than some far off central/east coast state.

ketamine 04-13-2004 08:08 PM

Looks like I get to be the next to claim "#1 Party School," although it seems the year has changed since the original post.

University of Colorado @ Boulder.

Previously known for having a female place kicker. Now known for recruiting violations as well as the rape of afformentioned female place kicker.

Also known for students rioting when the local police crack down on alcohol/drug enforcement.

Oh, and we have decent engineering and business schools too.

hilbert25 04-13-2004 08:31 PM

I'm pretty sure we have the highest percentage of students that go on to get PHD's awarded in Biology, as well as I think the highest number outright.

We also have the most unique school mailing, "Junk Mail".

The ugliest architecture of any school.

We are always listed in the top 3 engineering schools.

djtestudo 04-14-2004 08:16 AM

Maryland is also where Jim Henson went to school. Connie Chung and Bonnie Bernstein too.

And Jayson Blair (he never graduated, so he missed his final "Journalism Ethics" classes).

laconic1 04-14-2004 10:11 AM

Colorado State University Pueblo. They're known for their college radio station being ranked #1 in the U.S. in market share for a college radio station.

iccky 04-15-2004 06:18 AM

Allegheny College, and I just found out that we're rated in teh top %2 in the nation for "academic challenge." We have a saying around here, "Allegheny Hates Fun," which basically sums it up.

Funny, my college claims that too. But we're 1815, so yours is probablly right.

Damn, stupid, dirty, lying allegheny college....

04-15-2004 06:28 AM

I go to the University of Western Ontario, in (shock) Ontario, Canada.

Apparently it's known for being a big party school (which I sure didn't know till I got here).

It's also known as the rich, preppy people's school... the school where every parking lot is filled with BMW's and Daddy's credit card pays for everything...

Sure makes me wonder how I ended up here...

nanofever 04-15-2004 09:38 AM

I'll be starting UC Santa Barbara in the fall, and I heard that the partying and hot girl to not hot girl ratio are great. The US News said that they were a "25 hottest college to go to"; I assumed that they were talking about the girls.

Also, I hear that they some time have things called "classes" and those can be pretty cool.

KiwiKiwi 04-21-2004 04:58 AM

I go to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and unfortunately it's one of the most Liberal colleges in the country. However, Sports Illustrated decided that we're the "Best College Sports Town" for 2003, based on our campus' huge following of ALL Badger sports.

Other than that, we have great a great biotech (before stem-cell research was deemed unethica) dept, world-class business college and of course, one of the best dairy science programs in the world.
