Satire is dead.

An image that always brings a smile to my face whenever I think of it, is the "politically correct" Michaelangelo's David wearing a pair of Jeans from the simpsons.

Sadly life imitates art whether we want it to are not.

Controversy Surrounds "David" Statue

Reporter: Jennifer Johnson
Web Producer: Brad Maglinger

Kerry Niehaus is the owner of a replica of Michaelangelo's "David." He spends a lot of time fixing up his Virginia Street home in Evansville. "We're trying to restore the house back to the early 1900's era," says Niehaus.

Several fountains and statues already have a place in the front yard, but Niehaus and his housemate now have a new addition. "I bought it to enhance the yard, I didn't think it was going to cause quite the stir that it has," Niehaus says.

The statue of David arrived at Niehaus' home on Monday.

"We took it out of the crates and put it up in the yard and I guess Thursday I started getting knocks on the door and phone calls from concerned people," Niehaus explains.

But Niehaus says the complaints aren't coming from neighbors, but from some parent's of ARC Center children.

"We've had some concerns, but I wouldn't say it has been a tremendous amount of concerns," says Theo Boots from the ARC Center

Boots says ARC Center employees are talking with its neighbors. "What we asked them on behalf of our parents who are concerned, if they could just a least move it a little bit or turn it. I think that is going to please our parents."

"I don't particularly know what part of the yard I could move it to that it would enhance the house the way it does now," says Niehaus. "Kids are always going to be inquisitive about stuff like that, regardless if its my yard, a museum, library."

Niehaus says he doesn't want to offend anyone, but hopes his statue can stay right where it is.

Earlier, Niehaus had the statue covered with a sheet, but just recently he took the sheet off the saying there was a lot of support to have the statue uncovered.

Niehaus says he doesn't know when they will decide what to do with the statue, but since "David" did cost almost $2,000, he would like the statue to be on display.
Good lord! Won't somebody think of THE CHILDREN..... they might see....they might actually see....a....a.... a PENIS!
Filthy filthy filthy!

Retarded, that's all I can say.

ARTelevision 08-16-2003 01:49 PM

yeah, in the US, a penis in public is a problem, even if its just an image...

aintyoboyfriend 08-16-2003 01:52 PM

This is sad. This is are people! Art, from many centuries ago! They should take advantage of the kids interest in the statue and teach. Jeez.

sub zero 08-16-2003 03:34 PM

2000! Holy David! If I spent that much money on a statue I'd say "fuck you, and fuck you" and leave my statue right where it stood. But, I can't imagine paying that much for a pretty rock in the first place.

I don't think it's sad that people are requesting that Davids snake be bagged. If I drove by and found my kid looking with inquisitive eyes, I'd think twice. I see no problem in people asking billy bob to hide his wang. Seems like only the parental thing to do.

Then again, it is his property, and, as far as I know, sculptures are not popularly considered 'porn' so... :hmm:

holtmate 08-16-2003 03:39 PM

Some people feel that they should be able to shelter themselves/their children from any-and everything they consider offensive. While it is understandable for parents to monitor their TV viewing and internet use, preventing them from seeing art is ludicrous. It should become a good conversation starter for parents to discuss other things with their kids...

Zargix 08-16-2003 04:17 PM

AHH!!! why does nudity always have to mean the same thing as sex

Xell101 08-16-2003 04:32 PM

1. It is not obscene art...
2. Guys see a penis every day and I think parents would like their daughters to be fond of them one day.

bundy 08-16-2003 05:49 PM

its a sad day when society decides that the human body is obscene.

many would argue that the rejection and demonisation of such art is a product of the conservative era in which we live.

i sincerely hope this guy keeps David on display where it is, and tells the ´concerned neighbours´ where to go.

although, i wonder if all of the concerned neighbours are complaining about the statues nudity?

i get the feeling that some of the neighbours simply feel that such a statue in the front yard looks ugly, and more than a little kitsch.

but, yet again, its his yard... to decorate how he pleases. and for all i know of this neighbourhood, and his property, it may look divine.

good luck to him.

1973 08-16-2003 06:01 PM

How close to a penis does an object have to get? Is there a rule that people go by to judge penis resemblance?

I think that people go by the presence/resemblence of the glans.

It also might help this guy to remind people that porn is in the mind of the beholder, as demonstrated on Adam Connelly's Pr0ntings page (NSFW if you have a vision impaired boss)

i think i might buy a statue of David, 2 pr0ntings, and the penis that Alex kills the Catwoman with in A Clockwork Orange.

Fire 08-17-2003 02:47 AM

ok- I could understand this if this was a statue of 2 people fucking, but jesus, if you want your kids that sheltered move to somewhere in the friggan wilderness.....ps- didnt some psyco attack the real statue a few years ago w/ a hammer?

lurkette 08-17-2003 05:07 AM

Fer chrissake, what century is this? I curse our Puritan forbears for their passed-on prudery.

ratbastid 08-17-2003 05:19 AM

"Wow. Michaelangelo's 'Dave'."
"It's David."
"Oh."

Gortexfogg 08-17-2003 05:59 AM

Those concernced parents should quit while they're ahead. They should spend their time organizng a neighborhood watch or something else to really keep their kids safe.

If I lived in that guy's neighborhood, I wouldn't mind that statue. It'd save me a trip to the musuem.

Regziever 08-17-2003 06:00 AM

This gotta be some kind of joke.. people aren't that stupid.. (plz please PLEASE say it's a joke!!!!).

This ends up in the top ten "most ridiculous things I have ever read" list!!

Nisses 08-17-2003 06:12 AM

Regziever: awww, you poor innocent soul. They are, they really are :-/

remiel 08-17-2003 10:50 AM

the people complaining are probably the same parents who refuse to let their kids have sex education. Probably also the same parents who become grandparents in their late twenties because their daughter gets pregnant at 13

That's why, when I have a son, I'm going to blindfold him whenever he goes to the bathroom or bathes. I don't want any son of mine looking at penises (penii - or whatever the hell the plural of penis is).

marshall26 08-17-2003 01:50 PM

Remiel is right, these are the kinds of people that want to shield their children from everything....poor kids

raeanna74 08-17-2003 01:57 PM

I think part of the problem may be that our generation doesn't recognise classic art anymore. Even if these people are the religious ones they should recognise the statues significance. It's the representation of a Bible character and should be viewed as such. There are a number of lessons that could be brought out when the kids see it. If you don't like seeing it - just take a different route. When you panic about seeing it you give the nudity more significance than it would have held in the first place. I know as a kid the things that freaked my parents out held my attention more because they were "forbidden". Don't make a big deal out of it and kids won't either.

In the US, Nudity = Sex = Evil.

I hate this ultra-conservative crap. It's almost universally recognized as the masterpiece of sculpture, but the uneducated cretins only see it as a naughty picture.

I'm far more concerened about the prevalence of extreme and graphic violence available to children in America then I am about them asking why a statue has a pee-pee.

And yes, I am a Parent, and my son has been going to art museums since literally before he was born.

Tirian 08-18-2003 09:04 AM

Nice snow sculpture Bones.

That reminds me. Last winter I arrived home late in the evening, and drove down my street to the site of my neighbors snow sculpture. It was a farily good redition of a guy getting a blow job from a girl on her knees. And they had it lit up with spot lights.

Kinda made me laugh, but I did wonder about my kids heading down that road to school in the morning.

Of course I live in connservative central, so the police arrived shrotly after I drove past and within a few minutes they had the sculpture broken apart. I still wonder what "law" specifically they were enforcing. Also wonder which neighbor called the cops, but where I'm from it was probably 1/2 the neighbors who called.

Satire is funny because it makes an observation (e.g how uptight conservative America is about nudity) and then exaggerates it to absolutely absurd levels (e.g. covering up David with a pair of Jeans in the simpsons).
What good is satire, if it cannot keep up with the absolutel absurdity of the REAL world.

When I was a kid, I was brought by my parents (often grudgingly on my part!) to countless art galleries. I saw more nudity that I could ever remember. But to me, this was absolutely normal. In fact, I didn't even SEE the connection between nudity in art, and sex.
Strangely enough I didn't grow up to be some perverted deviant rapist! Imagine that! I turned out completely normal, dispite having my innocent mind warped from a very young age by such obscene images!

phoenix1002 08-20-2003 08:24 AM

Hey, here's an idea. Why don't we suggest to those 'concerned parents' that they simply castrate their male children. That way, they don't have to worry about them ever seeing a penis, and it removes their genes from the gene pool, leaving everyone happy.

I'd vote for that!

Kaos 08-20-2003 06:02 PM

If I spent that kind of money on a staute and people started complaining about the art, I would get a sculpter to give it an even BIGGER Penis.
