Kleptomania, anyone?
College kids steal signs. It seems to be a fact of college life. I'm pretty sure most of you did it at some point, or maybe still do, for all I know....
What's the best sign you've ever 'acquired' and where did you get it from? What's the best sign you've ever seen that someone took? Mine would have to be a sign that says "Caution: Laser in use. Do not stare into beam." with the laser symbol in the middle. The best I've ever seen? I met a kid one time who had a sign that said No Trespassing: Albany International Airport. Apparently he got there, had a lot of time on his hands before his flight, snagged the sign, and threw it into his trunk for when he got back. |
Although I have many stolen signs (Stop, Handicapped parking, Customer Service from Sears, etc.) my two favorites are the "No food, drinks, or smoking" sign I took from my local arcade, and the "No trespassing: Penal Code 30.05, by order of the Texas Game Warder Association" sign that I actually shot of the pole with my .243.

I've got a rusty 'No Dumping' sign I got from some guy's private property... I put it on my bathroom door.
I really really want to get the sign from Hurt street, but it's way high up and in a rather well lit neighborhood. Any suggestions? And BTW, my father used to work in a place that repaired lasers for college laboratories and etc. They had a sign up that said "Damn. Don't look into beam with your remaining eye." |
I have two Mile 303 signs.
It's the Denver area code. |
I snagged a sign that said Danger, Do not enter, deep mud. Was very large and yellow, was quite fond of it till it got chucked out :(
Friend stole a 5 foot tall metal grimace from the local mcdonalds. |

my friend had a bus depot sign that said "This Zone is for unloading only" and had that up in his bathroom. |
Software, music, erotica
|
"Please wait to be seated"... in a dorm room with ONE chair.
|
I have an old blue and white metal "Bell Atlantic" sign from a phonebooth mounted above my phone.
My big thing in college was orange cones, some friends and I would drive around really late at night and steal them from work sites. After, we would do things like filling someone's room with them...cones everywhere! |
Back in high school I had a "69th AVE" street sign hanging on the inside of my locker. One day the principal was walking by, saw it, and took me to the office. Police (always on site) confiscated my sign, threatened me with legal action, but finally just dismissed me with a stern warning.

I had a friend who worked at a hockey rink who stole their bathroom sign, put it on his door. He also took things like industrial-sized trash bag packages.

I saw once on a road trip, a Paper St. sign, I wanted it ever sense fight club I am on the lookout for that road sign and the only time I saw it I was going 75 on some country backroad with my friend and now can't remember where it was... *sigh*

in singapore the taxi drivers the car license was also on a sign on both sides behind the driver. we used to take them all the time.
|
when i was in high school, a couple of us were out carousing and i ended up with two signs, NYS route 7 and US route 11, from where they intersected at the corner of court street and tompkins street in binghamton, ny...i still have them hanging up in my garage/barn...

Personally I have no respect for people who steal stop signs. That is dangerous as hell and caused the death of a 9 year old girl in my city. If they ever caught the kids that stole that (there is a university campus nearby) I hope they are charged with manslaughter.
I have no problems with no-parking or streetnames but Stop Signs and 'caution: deaf children playing' types signs should never, ever, be taken. |
I've never stolen a sign, but the best one that I've heard of was a kid at the hospital (he was about 17) stole a sign from "The Breast Center" from another area of the hospital and hung it in his room.

I've got to agree that stealing signs is dangerous and an unrecommendable practice.
Having said that, I spewed coffee reading about the "No Dumping Allowed" sign in the bathroom! |
I would always get drunk in college and take For Sale signs in front of houses. I would put them in front of houses that, you'll never guess, weren't really for sale! HA HA HA HA Man was I a genius. I would also steal signs from in front of old ladies houses that said "Don't block the walk" I took them because they made me angry.
My favorite thing to do was to go to the grocery store after the bar and steal ring bologna. I would cook it up and eat it with mustard and horseradish. Yum. One time I went in there to steal some bologna and they had a buy one get one free sale. I paid that time, it was just like stealing. Suckers! |
