Friendster!

I've just started up at this Friendster thing and it seems kind of cool. I was wondering what the benefits/disadvantages might be. I am not looking for anyone as I am in a great relationship and have plenty of friends right now, but it's cool to have new ways to keep in touch.

Anyone got any stories about the site?

Can someone explain how it works? Does it come up with a list of every friendster and I choose which of them are my friends? I'm not clear how I find people I've known previously.

Main problem is that the place is way overloaded. You just ant get in in the middle of the day.

Basically it works like this:
You put in the name of a friend and it searches for them. That friend has friends who may be mutual friends of yours. You then hook them up as your friends.

You can find people who have the same interests as you and are friends of friends. You can also invite people to join. Basically a giant networking thing.
It's been great fun so far.

I joined a couple weeks ago on a referral, but I found a lot of people misrepresenting themselves. I have talked with a few people, with very little continued conversation and I have not recieved any interest from others on the site. Oh well.

Halx, you just have to try harder

I started with the friendster thing a few months ago, registered through a referral and didn't touch it for a while. then I got bored one day, and started looking through the galleries, and finding a lot of old friends. Once I made friends with them, I started talking to their friends, and have met a few cool new people to at least chat with.

It was pretty cool watching my network go from 20 people, to 250,000 over the last month.

If anyone wants to be my friendster, just click this link and register: http://www.friendster.com/join.jsp?invite=49401

Yeah, I tried friendster on a referral as well. I was really into it for about a week, then it just got old. Seems like most everyone is way too cool for me, at least those that I was somehow linked to. Very hipster.

They're going to start charging 'soon' to send messages.

Just so ya know...

EVerything else will be free (obviuosly) or else their member base would decrease dramatically, rendering the site useless.

So enjoy the message capability while you can...

I played with friendster a bit, I found it to be banal and full of people whose only purpose is to collect as many friends as possible.

Maybe I just "don't get it," but I like some content served up with my Internet experience.

a rant I wrote about friendster on another forum:

Why is everyone on Friendster a "hipster"?

Simple. People are terrified that if they are just straghtforward about who they are people will think they are boring and might even make fun of them. So instead, they find a quirky picture that makes them look "artsy" and gives us the impression that they don't take things too seriously. And then they find obtuse and indirect ways of describing their boring selves, labor over which books they should list as their favorites, and carefully select interests that showcase how much of an individual they are...

...and in doing so, they all come out looking the same (hipster).

What confuses me are people like Tanga (who I know through Rob Bliss, who I know through Vivian, who I know through Andy). Tanga has 128 friends listed. 128! I dare any one of you to sit down and start listing your friends, not even worrying about whether they are signed up on friendster or not, and see if you can break 75. Hell, try listing friends you communicate with once every 2 weeks and see if you can break 25.

And then there's Rob Bliss (who virtually introduced me to Tanga). Rob has 81 friends. Granted, like most people on Friendster, he's a DJ, and DJ's tend to be very popular. But still... 81 friends? I would be interested in seeing if he could name a simple thing about each "friend", like how many brothers and sisters they have, or what their hometown is (no looking on Friendster, Rob, though it probably wouldn't matter anyway because chances are good they list their hometown in an indirect hipster manner like you did: "Around the Way").

Are these people desperately trying to increase their network through Friendster? Are they hoping to reduce the number of steps it takes to connect them to Kevin Bacon? Or are they just trying to show us how popular they are, and in doing so, connect us with bunches of people that have no consistency amongst them and are no more likely to be a potential friend for me than the guy waiting with me at the bus stop every day?

I'm happy to say that my personal network now contains 35,940 people. I must be very popular.

OK, I'm already getting bored. At least it allowed me to put my birthday party invite up for my buddies who aren't in the immediate area. I hope some of them hop in their cars and drive their asses up to Brooklyn.

The good thing so far is getting in touch with old friends, not really meeting new ones. And hey, what's wrong witha little "friendly" competition.

I like Friendster quite a bit. It's been fun to get all of my friends on it, and have everyone write testimonial about everyone else then browse the gallery and see how many freinds we have in common. My main complaint is that I CAN'T GET ON IT AT HOME ANYMORE, no matter what time of the day it is. I used to be able to, but now I can only look at it at work. I wonder why that is. I've even tested it. I've gotten on it at work right before I went home, and then as soon as I got home tried to get on. No good. I wonder if it has something to do with Comcast. Oh well.
