ran across this a while back
http://www.text-image.com/ takes existing images on your harddrive and changes it into mutiply colored "o"'s. Maybe not what your thinking bout(think its called ACSII) but still pretty cool |

You can get a program used to make similar ones at http://www.mosascii.com You just give it a picture and it produces an ascii version. Here is a link to one of their examples http://www.mosascii.com/samples/examples4.htm

There are multiple libraries around for doing this that will take pretty much anything in RGB pixel format. One is called AAlib, comes with almost every linux distro... It's cool because you can hook it up to video sources like DVD
