Lamps! Bring lots and lots of lamps to study by. The more light sources you have, the less glare.

Ironically, from television's Mr. Show. Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. It was a hilarious series that ran for four seasons on HBO. You can read all about this duo at bobanddavid.com.

Couldn't agree more.

How about just LOCK the door when you're getting laid? My dorm that I was in a few months back had a regular lock and then a chain-lock. If the chain-lock was on, we knew to stay the hell out

ooh...speaking of playing cards, definately bring a few shot glasses.

even if alcohol isn't allowed in the dorms, you will still drink there. and its much better to take shots out of shot glasses than pass around the bottle to 12 different people.

Katie, chain locks are easy as hell to undo. All it takes is a bent coat hanger and 5 seconds, if you're practiced. Trust me, if someone wants you to be a part of coitus interruptus, there's really very, very little you can do about it except go to their place or move most of the furniture against the door. Even the furniture, however, can be moved by a big enough crowd of merrymakers.

Good call on the shotties, though.

I LOVE BOB AND DAVID!! I tried to watch them as much as possible, but never got to see all the episodes. Thank you oh so much for that information!

I thought Swiss Army Knives were expensive, so I didn't really want to go there...

I don't own any shot glasses, and think my parents would notice if some went "missing" when I left for college...

you can pick up shotglasses at school. i bet they sell them in the student store as novelties w/ the school emblem and such. the one we have around here is from Cal Berkley

as for knives being expensive, they can be, but nothing can really top having the right tool around when you're trying to ut together that new bookshelf you picked up cheap at target or whatever. believe me, definately worth dropping a few bucks on something with a screwdriver set, some needlenose plyers, and maybe even a small hammer.

ooooh... DUCT TAPE! don't leave home w/o it!

So, thank you tfpers for all of your awesome help!

Personally, I loved dorm life. I went to Elizabethtown College (small school, south central PA, near Hershey [where chocolate comes from]) and I had more fun there than anywhere else.

Never thought about the dcomputer, uct tape thing, though...good idea.

I got by the TV problem. I didn't bring one, but I did bring my computer. This when DVDs were just getting popular. We could still watch movies (and now even old TV shows), but it wasn't something that was on all the time.

They gave us desks, and desklamps. The dorms were actually pretty big. One thing I did do, though, was bring one of those inflatable air mattresses (Aero bed). College beds suck. This gave my back a little break.

Things I learned:

Bring ones. Twenty dollar bills are useless.

Bagles are safe for breakfast. Be wary of the eggs and sasuage.

Espresso is awesome (yes, I brought an espresso machine).

Cards and chips are mandatory.

Bring your own smoke detector! The ones in the dorms are very quiet! We once had one go off in the middle of the night - didn't hear it. Someone came knocking on the door and yelling - didn't hear it. My roomate yelled "go the f*** away!" - didn't hear it. And I was SOBER!

Finally, and this may only apply to me:
Don't fall for the one girl that is afraid of guys. That is all.

you all forgot the super soaker.

here are some other good pranks to play...
-tape a sheet or garbage bag to the top of the door frame, then tape the bottom to the door in such a way that it creates a fold. Fill that part with whatever you want... water balloons, eggs, popcorn, whatever. Then either knock on the door, or wait for them to open it.
-tie a string around an egg, then tape the string to the top of the door. Knock on the door, and when they open it, push the egg. If you do this right, it'll hit the person just as they open the door. My suitemates did this to almost everyone else in the dorm last year.
-take a heavy-duty paper bag, and fill it with shaving cream. fold the top together just enough so it stays in, then push it under someone's door. take a large book or something big enough to cover the bag, and drop it. If you do it right, it will spray shaving cream all over the victim's room. If you do it wrong, the bag will rupture and spray shaving cream all over your feet.
-my personal favorite. we deemed this one too cruel to do to anyone who didn't really deserve it. Go to the drug store and buy Ambusol (sp?). It's topical novacaine gel. Dip someone's toothbrush in it, and let it dry. When dry, it's clear, tastless, and scentless. However, when the unfortunate tooth-brusher brushes, he/she will suddenly lose all feeling in his/her mouth and gums, and start drooling uncontrollably. The effects will last for some time, so this is best done before they go to class, or something similar, if you truly want to get back at them for something.

This thread has been a big help, thanks!

I'm leaving for college soon and was able to ad a few things to my list. I wanna bring my big comfy chair for my desk but somehow I don't think it's gonna fit too well in my tiny dorm room.

Zello, even if it takes up half your room, that chair is worth it. You'll spend a lot of time in that chair, you'll appreciate a comfy one.

I loved living in the dorm. Same hall, same roomate for 4 years. Had a blast.

If alcohol isnt alowed on campus, and you want to drink, make sure you have a duffle bag. Gotta have a way to get your booze on campus

Also, check with the college and get dimensions of the rooms if you arent able to visit. That way you can be sure if you can bring that desk chair or whatever.

It's been eight days since I moved in to the dorms on my campus. Frankly, I'm about ready to kill my roomate. I think he's the only person here I don't like, that and his snoring sounds just like the sand people do in star wars.....

Oh yeah, what to bring?
I don't know if anyone has already said this but bring detergent.
and maybe bottled water incase the water tastes like ass like it does here.

Hide yer food n lable yer undies n shit. I know it sounds weird but I know a lotta people who've had their stuff "borrowed" without permission. Even with dudes....and well about the food....if they're hungry enough....ya know. If ya don't have cordless get one. Women like to talk.....more then likely she may get a late call when yer tryin to sleep n if ya got a cordless you can tell her ass to grab a chair and talk outside the door. Maruchan noodle cups for the hard times. More than one alarm clock might be good. Unless you ain't like me. If ya set 2 and put one out of your arms reach you'd at least have to get out of bed to turn it off and might get you on yer feet. I dunno how many times I unknowingly woke up and turned my clock off and then fell back asleep waking hours later only to find that I've not only missed every class...but fuckin lunch as well. Balderdash!

Asta!!

Bring everything that you think that you'll use. Remember that even if you forget things there is always wal-mart. As far as tv, vcr. dvd player, fridge, microwave go, talk to your roomate and see what you both have and go from there. Ask her what she is bringing it might give you some ideas. Remember that when you live in the dorms there is almost no privacy but you will meet some awesome people that may become your life long friends...don't be a recluse

That's what dorm life is about.. inappropriate stories
