NEVER...NEVER...Pre-judge people...(a long one)
for their looks, color, dress,or what they drive..ESPECIALLY if you are paid on commission, because this could happen to you.
So I'm outside today talking to a client saying goodbye and a 95 Malibu pulls in with a black family, cars kind of dirty and the man gets out..he's 40 or so. I walk into the offices and tell the salesman whos turn it is that there is a client on the lot(I'm wholesale...only retail to private clients) he looks at the man, the car they drove up in and says..."I'm busy and those BOOGS aren't going to buy anyway" I smile and proceed to go ask the man if I can help he says "I need a couple of cars for my boss" I ask what is he looking for in particular? He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a piece of paper and hands it to me and asks "Do you have any of these in stock?" The list: Mercedes CLK430 Cabriolet Silver or Orion blue CLK55 AMG any color Cabriolet or Coupe CL500 Must be Black/tan or Black/Lt. grey CL55 and color SL55 not one but two......both identical G-500 silver but will take another color, just no white. I ask him to come inside a minute(my heart is FUKING BEATING THROUGH MY CHEST) sit him down and look at inventory sheet. Lets see...I have all but the CLK55 and the two SL55's but if he could wait a minute I can make a call. He says thats fine and I ask if his family would like to come inside and wait(they do) I run a check and find out there are three SL55's, and four CLK55's on the water that should be here in a couple of days. I tell the gentleman I can have all these vehicles within a weeks time what would he like to do? He asks if I can use his phone because his battery is low on his cell........"No problem" I say(heart is really pumping now.I swear he heard it) So I leave him in my office, get his two kids and wife a soda, and I hear him say"yea.within a week" He asks me if I could come over and talk to his boss...........SURE! I grab the phone and the man on the other end asks "If he buys all these cars will we ship them to different parts of the US at no extra charge?" I told him as long as it's in the USA I see no problem. He asks"Since I know some of these are marked up way over sticker can I at least give him a better deal then if he came and bought just one?" I told him I see no problem sir but I will need a deposit and need someone to come and do the paperwork first. he asked me to hand the phone to his assistant...I do. The guy hangs up the phone and reaches into his pocket and pulls out a check and asks how much deposit I need.......(now I'm shitting myself) I smile and go ask my desk manager who laughs and thinks I'm pulling his leg, and says"$300,000.00" I tell the assistant the figure, he writes out a check and says he's going to get some lunch with his family and if his boss comes in before he gets back to explain that his cell is down and he will be back here in an hour or so. I tell him to take his time and I will handle everything and offered to pay for his lunch,he said thanks for the offer but he just appreciated me treating him nicely. He leaves and I sit at my desk and write the cars up: $62,999 $78,999 $93,999 $136,999 $146,000 $146,000 $76,350 Total $741,346.00 + tax & lic As I'm writing this up the salesman who said he was too busy comes over and ask what I'm doing and I told him I'm writing up a sale for that mans boss who is on his way in, he sees this and goes BERSERK........FUKING NUTS!! Runs to the manager and says I took his up and I can't retail fresh ups and thats his sale(my manager still thinks this is a joke someone is pulling) anyhoo, the manager says if it was his up why was he not with the client? This fucker lies and says he asked me to help him until he was free...BULLSHIT, I told the manager what this fuck said and if this deal goes down and he gives this piece of shit ANY piece of this sale I'll ruin the whole deal and quit. He says lets see if they come back.......I say BULLSHIT.this fuck gets nothing!! 35 minutes later a littlee old man comes in accompanied by one big motherfuker........HUGE!! We sit down and he explains he wants to give his kids and his grandkids all new cars as a surprise. We sit down, do the paperwork have a couple of laughs with his assistant who was at two other dealerships and was treated like shit and not taken seriously. Anyhoo, he wote out another check for the balance gave me the addresses of where to ship the cars and the dates they needed to be there., told me to keep his assistant informed on the status of things. I thanked him for his business and he tried to tip me $1000.00 which I had to decline(company policy) and the fuck that could have had the sale walked out screaming he was quiting and I ripped him off, that it was his sale about had a heart attack when he found out the commission voucher will be $12,567.00 So for those of you on commission.......DON'T PRE-JUDGE a customer.......that could be you Oh, and I think a little squirted out my ass when I got my voucher

WOW! Amazing Sale! That's money well earned by you, and a very good lesson by your coworker! I'm glad to see that there is still at least one decent salesman in this world!

so how did you manage to speak normally When my heart is beating that hard (and it would be) I think you can usually hear it in my voice. Either you have tremendous self-control, or the guy was too happy that finally somebody treated him properly
Anyway, great going, and I hope you enjoy the voucher (duh ) to the fullest

One thing I learned when I was in sales...treat EVERYONE equally. Image does not equal cash & the willingness to buy. hmm... maybe this is why I was breaking the records, I catered to the customer. I see a very lucrative future for you, my friend. |

No doubt about it. Treat everyone as if they are a potential customer. When I was starting out on my own, I went to a couple of car dealerships in my area with the intent to buy. They pretty much ignored me since I was just a college age kid dressed casually. Today, I will never do business with them. I've purchased 5 brand new vehicles in the last 7 years and not one of them was from the dealerships that treated me badly. I've also been involved with the purchase of at least four others (family members, significant other, etc).
Total I've personally paid for cars in the last 7 years, about $90k. Total for the other vehicles, about $60k.

No doubt great story!
EVERY retail manager NEEDS to see this story. Yesterday my friend and I walked out of a supply house empty handed cause the staff just did'nt give a shit, and when we wanted to buy a single bolt and nut and washer could not because of their minimum charge on interac policy. Although it may not happen, we may have ended up needing a truckload of bolts the next day. Every customer, and every small order is important to a retailer. I just wish more places would figure this out. I used to work retail (Radio Shack specifically) and I was tipped by happy customers from time to time. Ask yourself when the last time you felt inclined to tip your Radio Shack salesperson was? Great job on treating this customer like you did! I wish more folks like you worked retail. |

Great story!!
Take the SO out to a great dinner when you get the check (Or find one if you son't have a SO). Pat yourself on the back for ignoring stereotypes and treating the customer as a person. And then, to add insult to injury, Make a donation to the local NAACP, foodbank or other charity in the OTHER SALESGUY'S NAME. I had an uncle that made Archie Bunker look like a Mr. Rodgers. When he died, his daughter made a huge donation to the local United Negro College Fund in HIS name. The made a large plaque in his honor that is probably still hanging in the local office. Wherever my uncle is... He's PISSED!!!

I've worked retail and sales for a Harley dealership, and the one thing I've always held is this: treat EVERY customer well. Doesn't matter if they've come in to buy four new bikes and a bar-and-shield granfathert clock or a new flint for their zippo, they're still a customer. And the better you treat them the more they'll spend. The guy who comes in today and buys a ten dollar T-shirt might come back next week and buy an Ultra Glide Classic for 20 grand. And if you treated him well, he'll remember who sold him the T-shirt and talk to you about the bike.

I loved that story. You were a great salesman and a decent person. That was really nice to hear about.
If you can, patch things up with that asshole of a salesman. He can really help your career, if he wants to do so. I mean, if even he says you're doing a fantastic job, who could argue? |

I have a friend at work who gets shit all the time because he's black. He's a deeply religious Christian, he works for a living, raises his four kids who are all great kids, his wife is great, and they've been married for 12 years. He has a nice house, drives a clean Caddy, and has never had any trouble with the law, yet he gets pulled over all the time for driving 1-2 miles over the speed limit, while I haven't had a ticket in years and I drive like a crazy person. Racism will get you nothing nowadays, and I'm glad to see you got that sale instead of the asshole you have to work with.

There is a difference between pre-judging and being racist. Pre-juding based on color is a type of racism. And having prejudices based on hype, fear, sensationalism and other irrational stuff is usually bad.
But the ability to form and respect prejudices has been key to our species survival and expansion. If you think about it prejudices are good for everything on the planet except other people. Sure there are always exceptions, but when something could be liefe or death and your's is the only life involved which do you want the 90% chance or the 10% chance. I think it's this deep dependance on prejudices that make it hard for us not to pre-judge other people. Not making excuses, just trying to understand the problem. All this said, the guy you work with sounds like a racist ass, and a salesperson that wouldn't have helped a white family in the same situation would be an ass. All that said, being nice doesn't seem to be a big requirement for car salespeople, so perhaps over time it usually works out that a salesperson does better not wasting their time with people that don't look like they could affortd the product. I'm sure some one out there that has memorized all the fallacies knows the name for the one using an extreme-but rare example to make a generalization. I'm sure some one else probably has a story about a poor looking black customer that pulled a gun or knife on them when they tried to be helpful. I swear I had a point somewhere...I guess it's be nice to people, especially if you're a salseman, and looks can be deceiving or indicitive. So it's probably best to ignore them even though it could bite you in the ass. |

As with everyone else, all I can say is well done. I have a co-worker who told me a similar story about buying a car. She wanted a new Nissan Ultima. She went to the local Nissan dealership twice. The first time as she walked into the showroom and was only looking at their show car when a saleswoman walked up and said 'This one is already sold!' Nothing more, no can I help you or anything. I'm not sure why she went back. After receiving no help the second visit she went to another Nissan dealer in a nearby town. The salesperson there was more than helpful, looked for available cars within the state, and eventually ordered her a new one. It makes me wonder how the local dealership has managed to stay in business. I know if I ever go shopping for a car, new or used I won't be going to that shop!

I'm in the auction business (antiques) and I work for my father and his policy has always been that if you treat somoene right they will always come back. Its funny how someone comes in and says they have a house full of antiques and we set up an appointment to go to their house and after they leave my dad says to me that he had cleaned out their grandmothers or aunts estate and the reason they come back is because he was fair and honest with them. If anything I have learned honesty is the best policy, and treating everyone fair isn't far behind.

To the original poster, I think you got lucky. In the car sales industry I imagine that one would have the best success by going (being the first to snag) the 'big fishes' and by snagging as many as possible. Since cars are really expensive it's not a bad thing to have your 'pre-judgements' or whatever you'd like to call it. It can save you time and money. Yup, I'm convinced that you got lucky, but that's still a great story, and your co-worker is still and asshole. He's just a sore loser... sort of like a 6 year old. But, that's not to say his methods of sales are 'bad', maybe they're not morally correct but they get -for the most part- more cash in your wallet. I've worked (kind of) in soliciting so I do know this: everyone is a potential customer. With what I was selling, this was VERY true since what we sold didn't really cost much unless you purchased in bulk. Ok, it's getting late here (5:32am) I think i'm going to downgrade to level 'sleepy'. Good luck with your future sales and great job on this one! ps: just from what you said about the other guy I really want to kick his ass. I know too many people that act that same fucking way -they're sore losers. |
