Do you consider smaking a cigar "smoking" ?

I like to enjoy a cigar every now and then. I have probably had 3 in the last year. Sometimes it is more often, sometimes not. I dont smoke or use any other tobacco products.

My question is, do you consider this smoking? I get pissed when people who know me and know I enjoy a cigar now and then show me a smoking article or group me in with smokers.

What do you think?

P.S. I dont inhale.

remiel 08-06-2003 04:19 PM

I'd say it's smoking, but it doesn't make you a smoker.

If you don't inhale (and you're not meant to with cigars) you miss out on most of the nastiest stuff.

I think someone can smoke tobacco without being a 'smoker'. I consider you a smoker when you are actually addicted to tobacco

tenchi069 08-06-2003 04:31 PM

While even 1 cigar per year affects your health, that is like saying driving 1 mile puts wear on the engine. Technically it does, but in the long run it doesn't make a huge difference. You are smoking while you are having that 1 cigar, but once it is over you pretty much left the smoker's realm. I don't know of anyone that leaves a movie 45 min into it to go stand outside and have a cigar. Just my 2 cents.

cetacean 08-06-2003 04:45 PM

I don't think it is smoking. I can't satnd cigarettes or even cigars if they are indoors, but a good cigar outside is nice.

I agree with this statement.

remiel 08-06-2003 04:50 PM

{lame typo gag} I've never smaked a cigar in my life{/lame typo gag}

clockworkgreen 08-06-2003 05:33 PM

Don't think it makes you a smoker, and i definitely enjoy one every once in a while.

Ralvek 08-06-2003 06:01 PM

I'd call you a cigar smoker, nothing else. I myself enjoy a good stog from time to time, I even have a humidor stocked with several fine cigars. I still find people who smoke thos little filtered paper things annoying.

WhoaitsZ 08-06-2003 06:33 PM

i rarely see people drink cigars, so..... smoking

but it wouldn't call you a smoker, either. besides smokers are 'bad' people

(kidding)

tj2001cobra 08-06-2003 07:18 PM

Yeah I saw that after I posted it. Dang it :D

Of course it's smoking!

LOL

Do you consider farting a non-smelly fart really farting?!!!

Mr Mephisto

Macheath 08-06-2003 08:04 PM

Just make sure they're GOOD cigars and you have nothing to worry about.

Yeah, I smoke them too. All the cigar smokers I know are more considerate about where they light up, simply because they don't want some nosey middle aged lady screeching that their $15 Cohiba apparently smells "disgusting".

Lestat 08-06-2003 09:56 PM

I love a good Cigar now and then. My parents just came back from the Domican Republic and brought me back a couple.

crafty 08-06-2003 10:55 PM

Without inhaling a cigar it shouldn't affect your lungs directly, but the second hand smoke will.

However it DOES affect your oral health (read: yellow teeth?)

Slims 08-06-2003 10:57 PM

You are smoking. You are smoking a cigar.

This does not make you a smoker, and it doesn't mean that you are 'smoking' in the negative context that 'smoking' is often used today.

World's King 08-07-2003 12:48 AM

Just don't inhale... Be like Clinton.

Insomniac(uk) 08-07-2003 02:09 AM

I'd group you with the other people, your smokine whilst you have the cigar, but not actually a smoker, unless you crave the cigar days before you have one, then you're 'becoming' a smoker (IMHO).

Shane M 08-07-2003 06:39 AM

yes

troit 08-07-2003 06:42 AM

I don't know -- Do you consider "jerking off" having sex? ;) j/k

Yes -- I consider smoking a cigar smoking. It still carrys all the inherent risks as smoking cigarettes; i.e. - Lip, tongue, throat cancer.

troit 08-07-2003 06:46 AM

BTW -- After reading the above post, my comment seemed a bit harsh. Don't take this as a chastising -- I enjoy the occasional cigar myself.

true....ive always said the day i NEED a cigar is the day i quit smokin em.

ace81385 08-07-2003 11:51 AM

Its classified as enjoying a cigar occasionally. Yes its smoking But are u a smoker not at all. Plus smoking cigars is considered more of a social thing to do . So no i dont say ur smoker...

actinic 08-07-2003 12:02 PM

I don't know if anyone agrees with me here but smoking a cigarette is just that...smoking...no real thought on what you are smoking.

When I smoke a cigar, it's a sensory "treat" as you will and little "me time". The smell, the feel, the taste. Also that you are smoking a handcrafted, methodiaclly produced item and you do have to allot a period of time to really enjoy a good cigar.

The ideology per se is drastically different between tobacco industries of cigar and cigarettes. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

A Q that has brewed im my head:
Is there anything out there that outlines what is in cigarette tobacco and what's in cigar tobacco on a per weight aspect. I'm curious to know.

nostalgic1 08-07-2003 12:06 PM

to me smoking is smoking... but... i also consider there to be a difference between chain smokers and people that don't even inhale. so.. whatever that means...

jeenyus_one 09-06-2003 08:09 AM

of course it's smoking. Because you ARE smoking it arent you?

bernadette 09-06-2003 08:54 AM

you are an occasional cigar smoker

so what?

Lebell 09-06-2003 09:20 AM

I smoke cigars with approximately the same frequency, and no, I don't consider myself a smoker.

A good cigar is more for the experience.

I liken a cigar to a cigarette like a fine glass of brandy to a Budweiser.

Sure you drink both, but there the comparison ends.

sexymama 09-06-2003 07:42 PM

Smoking a cigar still smells bad and makes the smoker taste bad. It may not be the same as habitual smoking -- but it does have its consequences.

fuzzix 09-06-2003 10:36 PM

I'd call it smoking. Doesn't matter if you inhale or not, you're still smoking.

quantumburnz 09-06-2003 11:02 PM

Ya, I'd consider it smoking too. You may not be a constant smoker, but still a smoker.

cradeg 09-07-2003 07:24 AM

smoking a cigar is not smoking ! nuff said :)

Gortexfogg 09-07-2003 07:38 AM

Smoking a cigar (keyword: smoking) is smoking. No matter how often you do it, it's still smoking. Of course, it's no where as bad as have a pack a cigarettes a day and all that.

crow_daw 09-07-2003 08:45 AM

Ditto on what Gortex said.

Nimbletoe 09-07-2003 08:50 AM

If I saw someone with a cigar, I wouldn't label them a smoker until I saw them with cigars often, or its obvious they smoke them a lot (hacking is a big sign).

Didn't you really answer your own question?

dr_clocker 09-07-2003 03:11 PM

Na, smoking a cigar now and again doesnt make you a smoker. At the rate you smoke them, its not like your fully inhaling them anyways. I quit smoking, and wont smoke a cigarette but I will a cigar. They dont seem the same, nor do they make me crave nicotine.

battlemouth 09-07-2003 08:44 PM

its smoking, just a different kind, its more tasting

bundy 09-08-2003 12:35 AM

if i´m not smoking it... then i consider it worse than smoking!

selfish i know. but in the bar, i hated the second-hand cigar smoke the most.

seriously, of course its smoking. you just end up with tongue and mouth cancer, rather than lung and throat cancer.

krazykemist 09-08-2003 01:48 AM

Would smoking pipe tobacco be classified as the same thing?
It's not an impulse smoke nor a craving.
It's a relaxing, soothing smoke.
I think smoking the occasional cigar or pipe tobacco does not make you a smoker.
I personally have found people that smoke cigars and pipes more appreciative of others and sociable. Just my opinion though.

billege 09-08-2003 06:02 AM

Okay, the occasional cigar is okay.

Cigar smokers are "more considerate."

Cigar and pipe smoking is "soothing."

Cigarettes are disgusting.

Right, I just wanted to make sure I got those distinctions figured out.

Tell me when people start to make any kind of sense, okay?

To your question:
Yes, the occasional cigar makes you a smoker. Perhaps not a "regular smoker," but still, you lit that sucker on fire.
Your cigar has all the same health problems my cigg has, but you aren't inhaling. In your one cigar you get the amount of nicotine and tar it takes me a pack to aquire. So, don't go around thinking they're healthy.

Is the occasional cigar as bad for you as regularly smoking ciggies? No, I don't think so.
Does the occasional cigar make you a smoker?
No, it makes you a smoker in denial.
