How do you get up in the morning?

The guy who started the "working out" thread says he's at the gym every day by 6am. Some of my friends start work at 6am. How?

Personally I love that feeling of waking up (say 9ish) and then lying in a half-awake state in a soft, warm, welcoming bed for another hour.

I know that I'm going to have to start getting up early with my new job and that I could 'make more of the day' by getting up earlier, but how do you do it?

PS Alarm clocks is not an acceptable solution, the problem goes deeper than that! :)

gibber71 04-23-2003 01:40 PM

Wow,I thought I was the only one who did that.

The_Dude 04-23-2003 01:42 PM

my lil bro wakes me up for school.

alarm clocks dont work for me.

i just hit the snooze and go back to sleep and again.

Grondar 04-23-2003 01:43 PM

I work at 6 AM on Sundays.

I set an alarm clock and wake easily, so it works out, even if I am groggy and want to go back to sleep...

Nad Adam 04-23-2003 02:02 PM

Go to bed at 22:00, set your alarm clock and put it in a place that is hard to access so that you can't easily turn it off, like under the bed. You'll wake up in the process of turning off the alarm.

SecretMethod70 04-23-2003 02:05 PM

I can sleep through ANY alarm clock. If I need to get up at a specific time I NEED either 7-9 hours of sleep or someone to wake me up. If I've been getting good enough sleep the alarm will wake me up after 4-6 hours, but then I need to willpower to not ignore it (yes, I can do that without even turning it off)

During the summer when I have to get up early for work, rather than get to bed at a decent time I opt for the "tell dad to wake me up" method. He's up at that time getting ready for work anyways.

Atropos4 04-23-2003 02:12 PM

When I lived at home and was in school I had to wake up really early so that I was the first one to get a shower..Otherwise my brother stole all of the hot water..I got an alarm clock.
Now I have no problem getting up when the alarm clock goes off..That doesn't mean I want to...Plus I put it acrosse the room so that I have to get out of bed...I'm not a snooze button hitter...I get up at a quarter to 5 every morning. alpha phi on the other hand is impossible to wake up :)

4thTimeLucky 04-23-2003 02:19 PM

I need ten hours sleep.

The thought of getting up at 4.45. (after what, 5 or 6 hours?) seems ridiculous.

What's going on here?

ARTelevision 04-23-2003 02:22 PM

alarm at 6: 30, coffee, cable news, and Internet till 7, bathe, and dress, say bye to the girls, telecommute on mondays, to the office around 9-ish on other days.

sixate 04-23-2003 02:26 PM

I'm a morning person. I usually wake up before my alarm goes off at 6 am. Although for the last couple of weeks I'm going to bed in the morning cause of the hours I have to work right now. I fucking hate it.

zf0enix 04-23-2003 02:26 PM

I agree with the getting sufficient sleep idea. I leave for work by 6:00 and have to get out of bed by around 5:30. I use a clock but I must get enough sleep or I will be late. Usually, I'm in the sack before 10:00 (more like 9:15).

Geez, now that I'm reading that, I'm realizing I'm a boring old guy! Lamers :(

Wow, what a life you lead! Must be rough! ;)

World's King 04-23-2003 02:34 PM

I wake up when I feel like it... crawl to the coffee pot and make a fresh pot still blinded from the light...

After that it's all up to how I feel.

TaLoN 04-23-2003 02:34 PM

i usually get around 4 hours of sleep a night. i have my sound system rigged to wake me up. The only reason it works is because if i don't turn it off fast, then it will wake up everyone else in the house and they will all bitch at me.

Somenosuke 04-23-2003 02:44 PM

It depends on the day of the week. On days when I have school, I gotta get my hiney out of bed between 9:30am and 10am. Sometimes I set my alarm for 9 and stay in bed till 9:30. I don't know why, I just do. :p When I don't have school, I sleep in as late as my body will allow.

I tend to go to bed between 2am and 3:30am every night. Yeah, even on a school night. If I get more than 7 hours sleep, I'm screwed. 5 - 6 1/2 hours a night is good.

My alarm is very good. Too good. When I first got it, my first instinct upon waking up to it would be to cover my ears. Seriously. And I would always be pissed off, too. Luckily, the effect is not that strong anymore, and I am even able to go back to sleep if I turn it off. When I first got it, the sound would just keep going in my head well after I turned it off, so going back to sleep was impossible.

splck 04-23-2003 02:44 PM

I usually get to sleep around midnight and get up at 6:00 am, alarm or not, weekends too.
Life is too short to waste it laying around in bed. I'll never sleep the day away again.

Karby 04-23-2003 02:59 PM

when i have to get up in the morning, i usually just roll outta bed...onto the floor. i'm not a morning person. i stay up all night, when i don't have class the next day. almost always though, my day ends at 4 in the morning and starts again in 3 in the afternoon the next day...

Leggo 04-23-2003 03:43 PM

Damn .. I don't feel so odd anymore. I usually get up between 8-9am, and I set two alarm clocks: one right beside my bed and one at the foot of my bed, actually physically under my bed. I generally set them 5 minutes apart, so one goes off, I turn it off, 5 minutes later, I gotta crawl outta bed to turn it off. It generally works, but isn't foolproof.

phoenix1002 04-23-2003 03:55 PM

I got a really loud alarm clock. I still don't seem to be able to get up that early, though. Sometimes I set my alarm about 2 hours before my first class, so I can study or something. I always end up resetting the alarm to about 30 minutes before class, and going back to sleep. I don't use the snooze button... I'm not quite sure where it is on the clock, and I like it that way. I never get to bed before 1 am, and usually end up going to bed sometime after 2. Classes at 9:40 and 11:15, depending on the day. Next semester should be interesting... I've got a 3 hour art class at 8 am.

Spanky Johnson 04-23-2003 04:07 PM

I have to be at work at 7:30 am Monday through Friday and have two little girls to get ready and take to school, so on weekdays I'm up at 5:15. I usually only sleep about 6 - 6.5 hours. I'm not at all a morning person, but I always get up right when the alarm goes off.

Wow. That would be so great. Especially with a soft, welcoming person to snuggle up with. I need to try that sometime.

I do love the feeling of waking up with the sun. I don't know why but that makes me so much more refreshed than anything else. If I go to bed around 10pm or so, then I know I can open the blinds and have the pretty sunshine wake me up. Hopefully it's not cloudy that day.

apetaster 04-23-2003 04:15 PM

Alarm starts at 5. Wife actually wakes me up 45 min later by kicking.

greytone 04-23-2003 04:16 PM

I have not been able to sleep in since grad school. Now if I get a chance to sleep, I usually am awake by 7am. If I make it that long, the dogs are waking me up.

Unfortunately, I normally have to get up a lot earlier and what time varies from one day to the next. So I set two alarms, about 15-20 minutes apart. I watch a little news before I actually get out of bed.

Rinndalir 04-23-2003 05:01 PM

VERY reluctantly. My natural (or preprogrammed from college, who knows?) sleep cycle is to sleep during the day, and I'm most alert and active and creative late at night. Unfortunately I work an 8-5 Mon-Fri. So I force myself out of bed and consume unhealthy amounts of caffine...

pazza 04-23-2003 05:08 PM

I hate waking up for work. Sometime i have to wake up by 5.30 to get to there and it never gets easy. But the worst is if you go out the night before and only get 3 hours sleep. I just go through work dead the next day.

Binder 04-23-2003 05:23 PM

if i can i get up very slowly, i'm so not a morning person. but that is usually a luxury i don't have, so when the alarm clock goes off.... up i go.

I would have thought you to be the newspaper news type, Art, not the cable news type. But I guess it's more convenient and efficient to watch telly instead of reading? Or are there deeper reasons?

But to answer 4thTime's original question: For me there are good days and bad days. The good ones are those where I can sleep until 11ish or later, and get up slow and easy, drink some orange juice, smoke a fag and read the newspaper. And then slowly drift to university.

The bad ones are when I have to get up and be some place at 8 or so. Then there are two solutions: Number 1, sleep at my girlfriend's place, or invite her over. Let her wake me up :) Number 2, hardcore, set all my 4 alarm clocks at nauseating sonic levels, and force myself up (and then smoke and drink orange juice, skip the news).

By the way, I don't know how old you are 4th, but let me tell you: Old guys can't sleep anymore. That's why they get up so early. Forget about the discipline thing. Enjoy your sleep while you can ;)

dreamstate 04-23-2003 08:29 PM

I have the alarm clock across the room, I set it to a country station. It's the only way that I'll get myself out of bed exactly when the alarm starts.

phunktastic 04-23-2003 10:55 PM

very slowly :)

dreamstate,, I was seriously just about to post exactly what you did. I just have the alarm set up incredibly loud and on the other side of the room. Its a horrible way to wake up but it works when I need to be up early. Thankfully I only have to use it a few times a week.

Ashton 04-23-2003 11:45 PM

I'm a night person, I get up around noon and mess around on the computer..... then I go out and get the mail and the newspaper...... then I go back to my desk and mess around checking out what's up around the world ..... then I do what has to be done.... pay bills, go to the bank, wash the car, clean up around the house..... then I fire up the SS, go for a ride and visit my favorite waitress's for a late lunch...... then I go home and mess around on the net..... then around 6:00 I shave, shower , press a shirt........ and get ready for my normal night of drinking and gambling...... spoiling my favorite cocktail waitress's (which spoil me back with free drinks and kisses) have dinner...... (The Cooks spoil me too....) then close up the place, sit around with the staff and drink some more........ and after everyone goes home , Karin and I sit at the bar and talk about her day.... and I talk about mine..... then we lock the place up and I walk Karin to her car and kiss her goodnight, then I drive home..... mix a drink and sit at my desk........ log on to my forums and see what has been posted while I was out and about......

/That's a typical day for R. Ashton...... Sad but true :(

LordEden 04-24-2003 12:24 AM

I am a very light sleeper, I can sleep well but if I need to be up at a certin hour I can 90% of the time be up when I want too. The alarm clock on has to beep once and I'm up, if I don't wake up right before the alarm goes off. For a while I was waking up on my own, no person waking me up and no alarm clock on time everyday for a few months. Now I wake up, wake my gf up and get into the shower, drink a soda or glass of tea to get much needed caffene and I have to catch the bus to get to class, oh and if I don't have hard classes that day, get high before I get on the bus :-D.

guthmund 04-24-2003 12:56 AM

I sleep at all kinds of odd hours.

Sometimes I'll be up at 5:00 in the morning ready to go. Other times its a stretch to drag ass out till 11:00.

Because of the odd times of my classes, my scheduled family time, and my constant insomnia, I don't really 'do' regular sleep and the morning ritual.

THINK that they need 8.

Sun Tzu 04-24-2003 01:48 AM

usually Im just going to bed

Dragonlich 04-24-2003 02:06 AM

Previously, I used to wake up before my small watch sounded it's alarm. I got up, hit the shower, get coffee and breakfast, go to work.

These days (unemployed), I wake up around 7:30 because the cat demands food. I cannot stay in bed with her dancing around trying to get attention... she'll end up breaking stuff. :)

(Sometimes the bitch demands food at 4 or 5 in the morning. I feed her, and go back to sleep again. Then I wake up again around 10, with a happy cat sleeping on the bed next to me.)

raeanna74 04-24-2003 05:25 AM

Get a kid - They'll get you up by 6:00am if not earlier. I need 8 hours so I have to be in bed by 10:00 or so. Sometimes I give myself and break and stay up later. Not that often though. Otherwise putting the alarm clock on the other side of the room works well. For me it helps to have the coffee pot ready to go the night before so there's coffee ASAP when I get up (don't have a timer pot). I got a lesson just this morning on going to bed at a reasonable time. I went and stayed up till 1:00am (on the computer) and at 7:00 when I went to pour myself a bowl of cereal I realized I'd filled it with my bag of pretzel sticks. Does not bode well for the rest of the day. Guess I need to make me a second pot of coffee. The first pot wasn't enough. lol

holtmate 04-24-2003 08:35 AM

I like to get 8 hours a night, but that doesn't happen too often anymore. I have to get up at least an hour before I have to get ready to leave so I can slowly wake up watching SportsCenter and some news...other than that, the day is up in the air.

onodrim 04-24-2003 08:49 AM

I've never had any problem getting up *shrug* My alarm goes off, I get out of bed. Sure I don't like it most of the time and I complain the rest of the morning, but at least I'm up :). On days when I can sleep in though, then I usually lay around until I feel like getting up.

Lebell 04-24-2003 01:55 PM

Ugh,

Not bloody easily, that's for sure.

I'm a night owl, no question.

It was rough at my last job because I had to be there at 6:30, but now I have night classes and I find my schedule creeping the other way. For a while I was going to BED at 6am.

Finally, I stayed up all night and the next day to get myself back on a realistic schedule, but I can still hit the snooze with the best of them.

Fallon 04-24-2003 02:58 PM

I usually end up wakin up with lil smackin me, or me waking up before the alarm to try to be nice and turn the alarm off, doesn't usually happen that way though.
