I'm sorry, but if this kind of nonsense is what my tax money gets spent on, I want some of it back.

As a compromise, I think we should name hurricanes after characters in japanese monster movies.

'Florida is still feeling the effects of Hurricane Mothra this morning...'

I revived this, because since hurricanes seem to strike Dixie most often, they should be named after Southerners. Hurricane season starts in another week.

Hurricane Earlene
Hurricane Darlene
Hurricane Bobby John
Hurricane J.B.
Hurricane J.R.
Hurricane J.D.
Hurricane J.P.
Hurricane J.C.
Hurricane J.T.
Hurricane Bubba Dean

Now, since hurricanes are destructive and generally seen as a negative... Kinda like how some southerners view some yankees... wouldn't it be better to name them after yankees?

Aren't hurricanes named alphabetically for ease of reference? And Wlcm, I seem to remember from somewhere that it is an international body too. I can't remember the name of it though.

What a waste of time. Hurricanes don't care what you call them, stop arguing about it and use the perfectly good system that's already in place.

Maybe we could start using hurricane names as a marketing ploy by naming them after commercial products. "Hurricane Pepsi" sounds good, doesn't it? Then maybe someone other than the news media can make some money off it while we're at it.

However, I think she'll be up in arms again if there's a "Hurricane Leroy."

I kinda look forward to an Asian named hurricane, cause i hear they all know kung-fu.

I'm proud at the fact that as soon as there is a Hurricane Zhang Yi or something that they will have to raise if from a 5 class system to a 6 class system.

I guess she thinks there aren't enough people on the edge of being racist to be pushed over by something like, oh i don't know, having your house demolished by a hurricane named Leroy or Jamaal.

Umm, just to help keep this a bit fair and balanced... WorldNetDaily is a Republican National Committee website, not a news organization. They pick pieces of legislation out of bills that will look absurd on their own and toss them to Rush Limabaugh's radio show on slow news days so he can fill up air time. This is the equivalent of stirring up controversy over a state bird legislation that is on a Republican bill.

I don't care if your Republican or Democrat, if somebody posts an article without news service affiliation you are more than likely reading nothing but a political brochure. A big waste of time for all of us. (The fact that the story's meat was a running commentary from Limbaugh might have been a clue too.) Mega-Dittos, all...

It's not RNC, it's Joseph Farah's way of spreading his ideology. He frequently references the Bible as a source, expecting us to take it as seriously as a wire service. His circular logic can make me dizzy.

Thanks for the clarification MrSD, I had a blurb on a media list I keep that tied it to Farah, RNC, and even Swift Boats - which did make me wonder because of the obvious religious bent to the site. At least the others make an effort to trick you into thinking they are legit...

Believe me, I feel you Ustwo. Disinformation is rampant all over, it just a matter of whose lunch are we eating on what day. The best you can hope for is take a bit in from all sides and pray it's balancing itself out in your head by some miracle! I used to feel more comfortable with newsources overseas such as BBC or the Economist, but they are pushing their agendas as well.

All I am saying is that at least at a national level there is more exposure to what they are doing, therefore more likely to get called on the lies. I think if you are interested in intelligent debate, an effort to look at sources should be made. I was just suprised that 60 posts into the thread nobody seemed to have even looked at the website for 2 seconds to see who was behind it.

The reason is quite simple. We are so USED to such idiocy that we expect it. I did a bit of a search on this and it IS apparently true. You can google quite a few hits on it, and while most are from conservative sites, I can't find anyone who says its not true.

There are quotes attributed to her.

Quote:
Previously she’s said:

“All racial groups should be represented,” Lee said, according to the Hill. She hoped federal weather officials “would try to be inclusive of African-American names.”… “It is unfair for only Anglo-Saxon and Hispanic names to be associated with the great destruction and death that hurricanes create. We are sending the wrong message–that the African-American is not capable of such atrocity.” She added, “All racial groups should be represented!”–The Hill

And after a junket to Syria she said:

Jackson Lee said she was so impressed with Syrian President Bashar Assad during her visit that she invited him to speak in Texas, even though his country is designated by the United States as a rogue state and a sponsor of terrorism. “I’m sure someone will write a headline, `Congresswoman invites a terrorist’,” Jackson Lee said. “But that’s not what I’m trying to do.” … “He’s a 39-year-old president who even gave us a picture of him and his children,” Jackson Lee said.–Houston Chronicle

Then there’s her famous quote:

“The Congressional bonehead award goes to Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) who, on a visit to JPL, asked if Mars Pathfinder had taken an image of the flag planted there in 1969 by Neil Armstrong! Quipped Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R-MI) to the Washington Times: “We just don’t teach enough science.” Worse, Jackson Lee, who represents Houston, is a member of the House Science Committee’s space subcommittee. Perhaps some committee reassignments are in order…
Quote:
The Houston Chronicle reports that during a hearing of a House subcommittee dealing with NASA, California Republican Dana Rohrabacher mixed it up with Texas Democrat Sheila Jackson Lee. According to the Chronicle, Jackson Lee was "in the middle of a long-winded question that. . . had covered seven topics." She was "well beyond" the five-minute limit for questions.

Rohrabacher, the subcommittee chairman, asked her "to be more disciplined in being able to ask a specific question" and to leave enough of her time for the witnesses to answer.

Taking offense, Jackson Lee said, "Only Congresswoman Jackson Lee gets cited by the chair and she will continue to be cited. . ."
An angry exchange ensued, during which Rohrabacher slammed the gavel and told Jackson Lee several times that she was not recognized and needed to stop talking.

"I'm the only member that you comment on," Jackson Lee firmly stated. "It may be that I'm the only African-American woman sitting here."
As the audience sat stunned, Rohrabacher lowered his voice to say, "Ms. Jackson Lee, that type of charge is beneath you. It's beneath your dignity."
I'll be the first to point out that most of this comes from 'right wing' websites, but at the same time, looking around this women looks like a real idiot. Maybe its a giant right wing conspiracy, or maybe she is an embarassment to the American educational system.

The biggest issue I have here is that Limbaugh and company are even talking about this... Clearly the woman is a bonehead (thanks Ustwo for the convincing followup on her other boneheaded contributions - God, how do people like this get voted into office?)

The fact is they wouldn't even mention this if didn't suit their desire to paint all liberals with the same brush.

Instead of writing a big long rant here on how cultural issues like these piss me right off, I'll leave it at something completely inflamatory, and non-sequitor.

Maybe if we name the next one Sheila then she'll be satisfied.

I mean it's the name of a black person right?

Besides maybe she's just jealous and wants one named after her. Fitting, making a storm out of nothing but her wind. Right?

Heheh best idea yet. We can name them after politicians known for making long speechs and loving the sound of their own voice.

"And in weather, Hurricane Kennedy is ravaging the west Florida cost, and hurricane McCain is still expected to hit Cuba in the next 24 hours."

Wow this is actual news, i thought it was a joke. the name of a hurricane is such a worhtless discussion. i would be upset if i were the tax-paying residents of her district. There are so many other issues that are more relevant than naming a hurricane.

For the first time i agree w/ Rush L. The names don't invoke some sense of racial discrimination within my being. Just let hurricanes be named as they are now.
