Soldier snoozes in fridge to escape Iraq heat

The silly things some people do ...

A British soldier serving in Iraq has tried to escape from the sweltering heat by sleeping in a walk-in fridge and ended up being treated for hypothermia.

The Lance Corporal, an army medic in his 20s, sought shelter from the blazing summer sun.

A colleague found in asleep in a dangerous condition and he was taken to hospital, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported.

The soldier told officers he had become trapped while getting supplies but they did not believe him, the paper said.

"The lad was a bit of a fool to think he could have a kip in a fridge and not suffer from pretty bad consequences," a fellow soldier said.

"But it's so hot here that most people kind of understand what was behind his bizarre logic."

An army spokesman told the newspaper the soldier had recovered but was embarrassed.

Just another example of the overwhelming power of Saddam Hussein, and another reason that we should have never got involved! First suicide bombers, and now vindictive walk-in refrigerators. We are doomed to failure!

Man, if you're trying to adjust to a hot climate don't ever be tempted to turn the aircon full blast; you'll never get used to it.

Although during an Aussie summer, I do like to linger in the liquor stores walk-in for a minute or two when I'm getting a slab of VB.

I can understand, it must be hotter than fuck over there...

Especially given that he's a Brit.

Ever been to the UK.

Beautiful place, could even see living there, but it never really gets THAT hot, or THAT cold. It's a very temperate place. Probably hits about 24 or 25 max in the summer.

There is pale skin, then there is british skin which tends to be a slight shade of blue. No joke

You can't blame the guy. More power to him for finding the coolest place in Iraq!

Dumb? That's some fucking intelligence in there aside from falling asleep in the fridge, jeez, he did good! Next time though don't fall asleep. :D

Hahah, he's the friggen' man.

You would figure a medic would know better though :D

He was probably sick of standing around in the heat waiting to get blown up. Sleeping in a walk-in fridge in Iraq is akin to sleeping in the bathtub in some of America's worst neighborhoods.

The sea water alone was 97 degrees when I was floating around in the Gulf 40 miles south of Baghdad for Operation Southern Watch back in '97 - I saw the sun every 3-4 days and got to work in 120-130 degree engineering spaces. Fun times for all.

The error wasn't sleeping in the walk-in, the error was not getting preped. With a blanket or two and a soft pillow he would have the equvilent of sleeping with the window open on a winters day, which IMO produces the most comfortable and deep sleep. I got a roomate that has attempted to sleep with his head inside one of those small fridges. His only complaint was it wasn't cold enough.
